Rightful battle?: Bilal Lashari's Maula Jatt ready to roll

KARACHI:

Not so long ago, it was announced that the iconic Maula Jatt film will be remade by not one but two producers. But the film's remakes, which are being produced by Bilal Lashari and Faisal Rafi of Crew Motion Pictures, have triggered a creative firestorm. After the original Maula Jatt franchise's producer, Sarwar Bhatti, said that the two can't proceed with the projects as they haven't bought the film's rights, Lashari tells The Express Tribunethat his film is ready to roll.

"We are legally covered for the film, which will soon enter the production phase," says Lashari. The Waar director shares that he wasn't aware of the allegations being levelled against him by Bhatti. Commenting on the authenticity of his project, he states, "Nasir Adeeb, the writer of the original Maula Jatt film, its prequel Wehshi Jatt and sequel Maula Jatt in London, has rights to the Maula Jatt franchise." Adding, "Adeeb is a part of our team and has also written the dialogues of our remake of the film."

Lashari earlier described his interpretation of the film series as much darker and grittier than the original films. He had mentioned that his film will be a "stylised take on Pakistan's original film genre." Maula Jatt tells the story of a feud between Maula Jatt (Sultan Rahi) and Noori Natt (Mustafa Qureshi), set against the backdrop of Gujranwala. The Maula Jatt character has dominated Pakistani pop culture for many years.

Where the debate over copyrights of Maula Jatt may have revealed loopholes, it's important to note that Wehshi Jatt itself was inspired by Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi's short story titledGandasa. Since Qasmi passed away in 2006, it will take another 42 years for his intellectual property to be openly available for public use.

Bhatti had previously expressed his resentment at the news of the remakes, stating that both the producers will be at fault legally if they proceed with their respective projects. "I met Lashari and have told him that he is not making the film legally. I informed him that whoever has invested in his project will suffer because he has not bought the rights to Maula Jatt from me. I also met Rafi and, unfortunately, nothing materialised," Bhatti had said in an earlier conversation with The Express Tribune.

Maula Jatt was considered a resounding success of Pakistani cinema during the 1980s and spawned a number of sequels to become Pakistani cinema's first unofficial film franchise. It had a successful running at the box office for several years in Punjab, with a cinema in Lahore screening the film for almost six years. The original Maula Jatt is currently being remastered in England for a release in Blu-ray and 3D technology.

For all the talk of Maula Jutt as some classic - I will take a risk here and say that perhaps it may have been solely responsible for the eventual decline that was to befall "Lollywood" - as it turned from Urdu movies to Punjabi ones (as Urdu cinema atropied in the face of TV etc. etc.).

As a result cinema became dominated by Punjabi cinema - as that was the only one which was addressing the grassroots male working class crowd in the Punjab.

But what emerged was a many decades long "singular-script industry" in Lollywood - where every Punjabi movie had the same script (same script as Maula Jutt ??).

In a degeneration of the copycat syndrome - every Punjabi movie then was the same "gundasa-wielding" (Sultan Rahi - hero of Maula Jutt and the villain played by Qureshi) - then reprising those roles OVER and OVER forever. Until Sultan Rahi died in a roadside murder/botched-robbery - leading to Shaan to take up the mantle - but playing the SAME role (ratcheting up those 576 movies).

So Bilal Lashari going the Maula Jutt way may just be Lollywood history repeating itself again.

The producers of "Waar" may have had better judgement - but left alone Bilal Lashari may not have the "gravitas" (complete speculation here again) to know right from wrong maybe.

I am judging my complete assessment of him on the basis of him appearing in Waar in a number of gratuitous self-promotion scenes (to the point where I was wondering "why are they showing this one guy over and over again - he played the sniper and was shown in a number of places - just showing him once the first time he appears would have been enough). But this to me conveyed an amateurishness/juvenility (which maybe he has overcome by now).

Another negative against him maybe that he is son of former CDA (local municipal authority in Islamabad - Capital Development Authority - he plays Shaan's boss in the movie also with the forced English accent) - and that brings with it recollection of all the negative rumors that surrounded his involvement in various ventures (which may not be true). However he was known to be competent (regarding the corruption allegations which people make I am not sure how much is true or not).

He must be however trusted by Fawad Khan - since Bilal Lashari made some music videos for FK - and so maybe friends (Bilal Lashari also seemed to have been a music video maker - similar to the O21 director "Jami" - however "Waar" was far better made - and the effects and gunfights and bullets hitting walls etc. were more realistic - even though the hand-to-hand combat was not exactly Jackie Chan but still not too bad). However "Waar" had a number of people backing it - and probably looking over it's standards - which may have benefitted it (some logistical support from armed forces possibly etc.). That type of scrutiny may no longer be available for "Maula Jutt".

However since it is not costing the viewer anything for them to make "Maula Jutt" they are welcome to do so - and they may excell at it - and Bilal Lashari may be a perfectionist and with Waar experience in his belt may deliver something interesting.

What would be interesting would be if they retell the "Maula Jutt" story in a modern setting perhaps - however I don't know how much the current audiences (even lower level working class people getting on to facebook etc.) - that it is a different Pakistan now. And the same tribal and "love to hate" type of bombast which may have suited the "jahil masses" may not work so well now (esp. coming off the culture of hate - that Pakistan is just now deciding to come out of).

Also Fawad Khan as a muscle bound villian or hero - in the old style "Maula Jutt" may not be all that believable - so I would guess an possible different retelling (in modern setting - but still will be about one guy hating other guy with a vengeance - is that really what audiences want to see still ?).
