Since I am seldom around, I shall reintroduce myself. I am Kankshita and lately, I have been watching Mera Naseeb. Sanam Saeed has an ardent admirer in me and hence, I had decided the day the promo aired that I'd be watching.
The narrative is both fast and detailed which is one of the many beautiful things about Pakistani dramas. We're five episodes down and the performances are captivating. I haven't seen any show with Phuphi Ammi and Sajda in it before, but Samina Peerzada, I have seen before. It's most fascinating and awe-inspiring to see her portray such a variety of roles, she's so awesome as the very unlikable and shallow Salima that it's spooky. 😳
Syra Yousuf has had little to express but Nazia's innocence. Saeed is very, very much of a treat to watch as the spirited Shazia who is both gullible and then, not so gullible. The characters are all realistic, including Moheb, his parents, Fahad and his mother. Adeel Hussain is very natural as Shabaaz and I like the actress who plays his sister as well.
Mera Naseeb is like a slap across the face of a modern person like me. The girls were punished more brutally for meeting a male person than I would be by my parents should I be caught doing drugs and having unprotected intercourse simultaneously. 😳 From across the table, under the comfort and protection of their burkas, what were they even doing? I mean, it was almost like, Salima really would have killed Nazia. Sajda really did say she didn't care that, after doing this, Shazia auctions herself in the market. It disturbed me most greatly to see that.
Furthermore, I did not understand how Shabaaz and Fahad and Moheb all fell for Nazia's beauty. Okay, I did get it. But it is limited of them. It is limited of the girls' family to do what they are doing too. But I see that they have limited choices and no wish to break the trend. I condemn such practices and notions and I'm sorry that they are the real landscape of many Muslim and Hindu communities alike.
In summation, stuff I definitely like:
1) That Shazia doesn't care that she is not considered beautiful by literally, anyone 😎
2) The girls' concern for each other, despite everything and by everything, I mean everything; theirs is a very intimate and beautiful bond and I haven't seen others of its like in any Pakistani show I have watched thus far
3) Samina Peerzada's acting
4) Phuphi Ammi and how she silently understands the girls' plight and how pointless those customs are 😳
5) The conversation between Shazia and Moheb, however much the latter screwed up his character ultimately later in the episode 🤔
6) Nazia and Shabaaz's love-at-first-installment-of-the-principal-amount-of-300-bucks; I made peace with its lack of substance because how can you blame a sincere man like Shabaaz if the whole of his country is trying to make sure that he has absolutely no love life, whatsoever? 😆
PS I am enjoying the show, despite my issue with the exceedingly orthodox stuff associated with it. Also, I'm rather curious to know what Phuphi Ammi tells Nazia tomorrow. And only the thought of watching it in HD is keeping me from YouTube right now. 🐷
PPS The title track is beautiful, dudes.
Sincerely,
Epiphany.
