KHOOBSURAT Is Strictly Timepass Harmless Watch
Pluses:
Sonam Kapoor looks million bucks and delivers a decent act, Fawad Khan is average, Ratna Pathak Shah is brilliant, couple of good songs
Minuses:
screenplay is tight in 1st half but loses grip completely in 2nd half, Kirron Kher simply tests your endurance levels with too loud act, dialogues are too cheesy at places
Critic Rating:
2.5/5
Business Rating:
2/5
Verdict:
Watch it for simple non dramatic breezy feel
Detailed Analysis:
'Khoobsurat' is next offering from Sonam Kapoor after she acted in disastrous home production 'Aisha'. This time around film is remake of an average box office Rekha starrer of same name directed by none other than the 'master' Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Film has rather simplistic plot. Mili Chakrobarthy (Sonam Kapoor) is a physiotherapist and she works for SRK's IPL team KKR. She visits a royal King in Rajasthan for treatment. Palace has Arjun Kapoor types over stiff - too serious Prince Vikram Rathore (Fawad Khan), a stereotype strict Rani Nirmala Devi Rathore, 17 year old daughter cum aspiring actress Divya and the patient, King (Aamir Raja Hussain). Mili also has loud punjabi mother Manju (Kirron Kher) and rather too shy and calm father Praveen. King does not want to walk again on his own feet as he is haunted by the guilt of his elder son's demise. How Mili breaks the discipline inside the palace, treats king and falls in love with prince form the crux of the story.
Performance wise Sonam Kapoor is quite good but she is defeated by the same vice which hit the film too. Sonam looks glamorous, tries her best to behave like character but she never gets inside the skin and remains superficial. She is no where close to super Delhi girl act of Parineeti Chopra in 'Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl' or Anushka Sharma in 'Bnad Baaja Baraat'. She tries to be Geet from 'Jab We Met' but can some one tell all actress you can't repeat a classic! Fawad Khan is good but he looks at times too stiff which might be demand of character so he gets benefit of doubt! Ratna Pathak Shah never fails to impress and she delivers yet another natural act. Kirron Kher remains in 'Dostana' mould and she shouts and shouts and ...! Aamir Raja Hussain is decent.
Background music of the film is good and couple of songs are in sync with the film but still lacks one big chartbuster. Script moves fast in 1st half but 2nd half is not even half good . Dialogues are inconsistent where few make you laugh but then few are too cliche. Cinematography is decent and editing is uneven as few shots are repetitive. Costume and art department did job well. Aditi 'cameo' Haydri and Cyrus Shaukar are good in the cameos.
Director Shashanka Ghosh makes a brave attempt to remake Hrishida's film and though to be fair, he does not spoil it but he misses the warmth of Rekha's character and even if you treat this as original, film never rises above the superficial stuff. No emotions can be seen or felt as it remains a very shallow act.
Film will release tomorrow and will get opening of some sort for sure in urban centers as this treatment or cast has not much chance in mass centers especially when film will face competition from 'Daawat E Ishq'. Film will find tough at box office though good word of mouth can turn it around.
