PART2
Kaha ho Mishti!? Abir had been frantically searching for Mishti for the last 20 mins. Driving in each and every nook and corner, trying to find the solace to his distressed heart. You know how I feel when you’re not with me…main lost feel karta hu. Like an empty house with no residents. As the sun began to set, Abir tried his last chance at the market. He parked the jeep on the side of the road and began rushing towards the shops when he heard a crack under his foot. Looking down below, he picked up the familiar piece of jewellery. Abir realised “Yeh to Mishti ke earrings hai, she was wearing them today,” this means she has to be here somewhere he thought. Grabbing the crushed earrings in his hands, he continued running in to the market. “Mishti!!” Mishti!!” howled Abir. He waited to hear any familiar sound in reply. Nothing. Unconvinced, Abir continued to search around the stalls. “Okay calm down Abir. Calm down!”Abir reassured himself. “Think calmly, where could Mishti be in the market?” Abir stopped and peered towards the end of the road. “That’s it! I know exactly where she would be.” Rushing towards their regular tea stall, Abir held on tight to Mishti’s earrings. As Abir made a quick turn around the corner, he instantly stopped and silently gulped his first proper breath since the godhana. He could finally feel his racing heart slowly calm down. He had found his home. Mishti was sitting curled up like a ball with her head buried in ghagra and her hands hugging her knees together. The sudden rustling sounds of Abir’s feet with the ground, had snapped Mishti from her trance. Turning around from the steps she met eyes with the man she had promised to protect from any pain and sorrow. Yet those were the exact emotions she saw in those pure, innocent brown eyes, standing a few meters away. Her eyes began to well up with tears, as she helplessly watched a shattered Abir. Abir who had beamed a small smile of relief, quickly frowned with creases forming on his forehead, at the sight of Mishti’s red puffy eyes.
“Mishti…
“Abir….
They aspirated.
Within seconds, before Mishti could even process the situation, she found herself engulfed in Abir’s warm embrace. She could hear and feel his heart pounding against his chest. Mishti began gently patting and rubbing Abir's back to comfort him, as she felt his arms tighten further around her. Resting his head on hers, Abir felt a wave of sukoon he had been yearning for the last hour. He just stood there for a moment savouring that feeling he never wanted to lose. Remembering his panicked state for the last 30 mins, he abruptly pulled Mishti out of the hug. Puzzled, Mishti looked up at Abir’s fretted face.
“Do you have any idea how worried I was!? Abir yelled. “I’ve been looking for you absolutely EVERYWHERE!? I’ve been in every street of Rajkot, searching for you for the last half hour aur Tu yahan hai!” Mishti shocked at Abir’s flustered state, tried holding his wavering hands. “Tu yahan hai! sitting here all alone in this distraught state?” concluded Abir.
“Sorry Abir. I’m very sorry,” Mishti apologised. “I felt you needed your mum the most during this time. It’s just seeing the wall between you and Meenakshi aunty finally break down, I didn’t want to disturb the special moment you both had been longing for.”
“Mishti… Abir grumbled. “I need you as much as I need maa. How could you just go? You know how I feel lost without you around. And now, when my entire world has come crashing down, you thought you would just leave? No questions asked? Abir asked.
“No! Ofcourse not. I would never leave you at such a difficult time. I was going to call and meet you later. I thought to give you some space and time to digest the situation. Abir…” Mishti continued to explain, holding Abir to sit on the step with her. “Abir, I know exactly how you feel. The disheartening feeling when you realise the father you waited for your entire childhood, is not worthy of the title ‘papa.’ When the man you had high hopes and dreams about, ends up being your worst nightmare instead, I know how painful it is. I wish I could have somehow saved you from this pain. I wish hamare kismat ek jaisi nahi thi." Mishti lamented.
Abir looked deeply into Mishti’s sorrowful eyes, filled with tears reflected in his own. Finding it difficult to handle and digest, he looked away hiding back his tears. Mishti grabbed his shoulder and said, “Abir, I’m so sorry. Sab meri galti hai. I’m the worst girlfriend, who always fails in giving surprises.” Abir shook his head at Mishti. “I believed I was presenting you with the best birthday gift, by returning your lost childhood with Baba. But meri phooti kismat…I officially presented your life’s biggest dhokha.”
“Nahi Mishti, How can you blame yourself?” Abir tried reassuring her. “You believed Baba just like I did when we met him, how could you have known he was going to do such a scam game? You didn’t know the truth.” Abir paused and noticed Mishti lowering her gaze from his. “Right?” Abir asked, raising an eyebrow. The silence from Mishti, created further confusion in his mind. Instantly he remembered Mishti and Baba’s taunts earlier at the lakeside.
Baba: “If ONLY you listened to me, and kept your mouth SH--!
Mishti: “…yaad hai maine bhi aapse kya kaha? – Main bhol sakti hu, aur bolungi bhi, especially jab baat meri Abir ki ho.”
“Mishti…” Abir prompted. Mishti could feel the deep gravitas of his tone, in her guts. She knew there was no escaping now. “The things you and Baba yelled at each other earlier, at the lake.” Abir anxiously asked, “Woh sab kya tha? What was all that about?”
Mishti gulped and took a deep breath, turning towards Abir. She still didn’t have the courage to look directly in his soulful eyes. “Nahi Abir, I knew your Baba was planning something against you before the GD today.”Mishti confessed. Astonished, Abir simply watched her continue. “I’ve had these doubts on your Baba for a few days now, and in order to confirm them, I went to Rajgadh.”
“Haan I know you went to Rajgadh, but you told me on Karwa Chauth you were there to look around for our shaadi. After that night together,we got busy with our godhana. So how? When did you get to know Baba’s truth?,”Abir stammered to find reasons.
“Nahi Abir, I had gone to Rajgadh on KC to find out about Mehul. Something was telling me, he was hiding something, but I just didn’t know what. So I went to find some proo—”
“Kya!? Tumne mujse jhoot kaha tha? You lied to me Mishti. How could you!?” Offended Abir, got up immediately and walked down the steps with his hands on his hips.
“Abiir!...stop, Abir! Just here me out, please!” Mishti pleaded.“How could I tell you when, even I didn’t know what was going on? What would I say to you, when you ask me why I had the doubts? I had no evidence—”
Turning to face Mishti, Abir exclaimed “I thought we both knew the importance of honesty and openness. Issi baat pe tho tum naraz hogayi thi, when you learned I hid about Nanko running away from his shaadi. THIS was the exact reason why I was upset with Naanu when I realised, he had been lying to me too, and of course all these years I fought with with maa. They both constantly lied to me and kept me in the dark.” His voice was now choking up. “And now you too? Not ever in my dreams would I think YOU of all people would keep me in the dark Mishti.”
“Abiir, I know I made a mistake. But I promised myself as soon as I had solid proof, I would tell you. And that’s exactly what I did.”Mishti tried to explain. “I tried calling you, when I found the proof this morning in rajg---
“This morning? You were in rajgadh this morning?!” Abir was beyond shocked. He was appalled. “You left our godhana to do jasoosi? I knew it!” Abir scoffed. “I knew something was not right, I felt you were not at home. I can’t believe you were secretly investigating behind our backs whilst I was worried sick.” Abir overwhelmed, covered is face with his hand as he turned and began walking away.
“Abiir! Ruko! Please!” Mishti pled. “Abir we can talk this out…
“Nahi Mishti, I need some time. I need some time to process everything. Go home,” Abir requested. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” he assured as he started to leave again. But Mishti wasn’t going to give up. She grabbed hold of his hand and started “Abii—” when she felt something within those unusually cold hands. Opening up his hand, Mishti saw the earrings she unknowingly dropped earlier. Abir turned around, glancing at his hand then at Mishti’s teary eyes.

They both noticed the crack in the earring, holding their strong gaze at each other, Abir slowly handed over the broken earrings in to Mishti’s hand. Before he walked away, he took a long pause to just look at the girl barely standing infront of him. He tried to read her emoting eyes, but his vision was blurry with his own tears. So, with a heavy heart he turned to walked away from the girl he couldn’t recognise anymore. Mishti silently watched Abir disappear out of the market, just like the sun disappeared, setting behind the horizon.
