This is so beautiful ❤️
As Abir expected, the day passed with very few issues. He spent almost the entire day at the NGO, working. Diwali was just around the corner and there was a lot to be done. The NGO collaborated with various indigenous sellers across the city for an exhibition to sell their products. This exhibition was the main source of funds for the NGO, and Abir took it very seriously. It was a known fact that he didn't like to be disturbed while working on plans for the project, so, thankfully, nobody bothered him the entire day, except the one welcome distraction in his life.
The constant stream of messages from Mishti brightened his day. She'd text at the most random times, with equally random messages, letting him know how her day was going, worrying about prep for the evening, and being mad at him for banning her from work for the day among other things. He couldn't help but laugh at his cute Angry Chorni, and just how adorable she was being.
Despite all this, the day seemed to drag. Abir looked at the clock every five minutes, and the second it struck six, he was out the door, surprising everyone.
Once home, he dressed in his best sherwani, probably looking like a groom ready to get married, but couldn't bring himself to care. He was just so excited to see his Angry Chorni. Every second felt a little too much at that point.
"Abir! Beta… Aaj teri aur Mishti ki shaadi nahi hai," Nanu teased him when he came downstairs, dressed to the nines.
"Pata hai mujhe," he sulked.
"Arreeee, Gadheda! Agar tujhe pata hai… Toh aise dulhe ki tarah tayyar hoke kyu aaya hai? Jaa… Pehle jaake kapde badal," Nanu replied.
"Lekin, Nanu…" Abir started.
"Kya?" Nanu asked.
"Main itna achcha toh lag raha hu. Itni mushkil se ek kapda dhang ka mila hai… isse badalke ab kuch achcha hai nahi. Toh main yehi pehenoonga," Abir replied.
“BaapuJi… aap kyu Abir ko pareshaan kar rahe hain? Rehne dijiye.Aur chaliye aap bhi jaake tayyar ho jaiye. Humein late ho raha hai,” Meenu intervened.
Abir threw his mother a thankful glance that she returned with a smile. One by one, all the Raajvanshes gathered in the living room, ready to leave for the Maheshwari House. By the time they reached, it was close to 8, and Abir was getting extremely antsy. He’d worked the entire day on an empty stomach, which made him tired, but his excitement to see Mishti was taking a front seat at the moment. He wrangled everyone and quickly made his way inside, making them laugh at his eagerness.
Inside, they were greeted by Badi Maa. Abir gave her his hugest smile and touched her feet to seek blessings.
“Hamesha khush raho,” she told him, and then pulled him in for a hug as was becoming a customary greeting between the two of them. She was his mother in every way that counted already. Though Abir was happy that Meenakshi had accepted Mishti, or was at least trying to, and that had improved their relationship a lot, there was still a lot of bad blood between the two of them owing to Meenakshi’s actions in the past. Badi Maa had filled the gap of a mother in Abir’s life when he had wanted one so badly and the bond he had withher now was not something he would ever have with Meenakshi no matter how muchthings improved between them. His Badi Maa would always be his number one, just like she was Mishti’s.
As more greetings were exchanged between the two families with happy smiles and warm hugs, all Abir could do was look for his Mishti, who was nowhere to be seen in the midst of this helter skelter.
“Kya baat hai, Bhai? Kisse dhoond rahe ho?” Atul asked, siddling up to him? “Bhabhi ko?”
“Of course! Ab Abir Bhai ki nazrein toh sirf Mishti Bhabhi ko hi dhoondengi na?” Ketki added as she stood on Abir’s other side, looping her arm through Abir’s.
“Tum dono ko koi aur kaam nahi hai kya?” Abir whined. “Jab dekho bas mere peeche pade rehte ho!”
“Bhai… yeh toh humaara haq hai. Ab toh aapko tease karne ka mauka mila hai, aise hi thodi na chodenge,” Ketki stated.
“Exactly, Bhai! Ketu sahi keh rahi hai. Aur waise bhi, aapne jo humein itna pareshaan kiya hai, uska badla toh hum leke hi rahenge,” Atul said.
“Tum… tum dono itne annoying kyu ho?” Abir complained. “UGH!”
“Oh! Woh dekho! Mishti Bhabhi!” Atul cried suddenly, pointing towards the stairs. Abir turned around immediately, his gaze searching for Mishti desperately. When he came up empty and heard Atul and Ketu’s boisterous laughter, he turned to the duo to see them cackling away.
“It’s not funny,” he stated.
“Oh! But it is, Bhai!” Ketu replied.
Fed up, Abir made to chase after them, which prompted both the siblings to take off running. “Ketu! Atul! Ruko! Aaj toh main tum dono ko nahi chodunga!” Abir cried. Running the way he was, Abir wasn’t really paying attention to anyone or anything around him apart from his two cousins and as he turned around the corner, he collided into someone.
Instinctively, Abir’s arms shot out and he wrapped them around the person, steadying the both of them. When he looked at them, intent on apologizing, his breath got stuck in his throat, seeing Mishti standing there, dressed in a beautiful blue lehenga. Her hair was open in loose curls and she was wearing no accessories other than the pendant and the bracelet he’d given her. To Abir, she’d never looked so beautiful as she did then, dressed in clothes his mom had sent for her, wearing accessories he’d picked for her. She’d never felt more his than in this moment.
Unable to resist, he pulled her into a hug. “Hi,” he breathed into her hair.
“Hi!” Mishti replied, snuggling close to him. As her fingers made their journey down his back and to the pocket of his sherwani, he felt her put something in it, and smiled. Ever since he’d discovered the letters, he’d gotten careful and made it a point to be alert when she was in such a close vicinity to him, wanting to know just when she dropped her precious thoughts, and her beautiful vows to him. Luckily, he’d been successful so far.
The feeling he got when he felt her do this was not something he would ever be able to describe in words. He just felt like the luckiest guy in the universe, period. But, it wasn’t just that. It was so much more, and he didn’t think he would ever be able to express that warmth he felt when she did this.
“ABIR! MISHTI!” Badi Maa called, breaking their moment, and forcing them to pull out of the hug. Abir smiled at Mishti and kissed her forehead before taking her hand in his and walking back to the living room.
The moon had finally deemed it okay to grace them with its presence, and so, the entire family made their way to the terrace, which was set up beautifully in reds and greens. Abir slyly pulled Mishti away into a corner which was a little out of the way, away from the prying eyes of their family.
“Abir! Yeh kya kar rahe ho? Sab wahan hain! Humein aise alag nahi khade hona chahiye,” Mishti said, tensed.
“Mishti! It’s okay. Baaki sabka pehla karwachauth nahi hai. Tum dekhna. Koi kuch nahi bolega,” he told her.
“Lekin, Abir…” She started, only to be cut off by Abir’s finger pressing to her lips and his arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her to him.
“Koi lekin nahi, okay?” He asked her, looking at her intently. All Mishti could do was nod at him.
“Chalo, Angry Chorni,” he stated. “Jaldi se vrat kholo. Bohot bhook lag rahi hogi na tumhe?”
Mishti nodded and then picked the sieve up, gazing at the moon through it and then turning to look at Abir, who was already staring at her with the most affectionate expression she’d seen him sport. Mishti blushed a little and then looked away, picking up the glass of water kept there. Abir tried to take the glass from her, but she pulled it out of his reach, making him frown. “Yeh kya kar rahi ho, Mishti? Jaldi do mujhe! Vrat kholna hai tumhaara.”
“Pehle… tumhaara,” she replied, offering him the water.
Those two simple words melted Abir. He always knew that Mishti knew him better than anyone else but he didn’t know that she knew him so well.
“Tumhe kaise pata chala?” He asked, his voice thick.
“Bas.... Pata chal jaata hai,” Mishti replied smartly.
“Mishtiiiii!” He whined.
“Arre baba… itna toh tumhe jaanti hi hu main,” she told him.“Waise bhi… mujhe pata tha ki yeh Ajeeb Raajvansh kuch toh ajeeb zaroor karega. Aur waise bhi… tum kabhi mujhe kisi cheez ka credit thodi lene dete ho. Agar tum bhi vrat nahi rakhte… toh main jeet jaati na,” she joked.
Unable to formulate any sort of words at what she’d said, Abir just kept staring at her, wondering how the hell did he get so lucky.
“Ab kya poori raat aise hi khade rahoge?” She asked. “Chalo! Jaldi se paani piyo. Mujhe bhi bohot pyaas lagi hai.”
Abir nodded and quickly drank the water, taking the glass from Mishti’s hands and making her drink from it as well. When Mishti picked up the gulaab jamun, intent to feed him first, he took it from her and fed her before she could make him eat it.
“Paani maine pehle piya… toh khana tum pehle khaogi,” he said by way of explanation. When she glared at him, he just shrugged.
Knowing it was stupid to argue, Mishti let it go, taking a bite out of the gulaab jamun before feeding him from the same one.
Abir smiled at Mishti and then pulled her into a hug, kissing the top of her head. “I love you,” he told her.
“I love you, too,” she replied.
“Thank you for your messages, by the way. Agar aaj tum mujhe itna text nahi karti toh pata nahi mera din kaise nikalta! I really missed you,” he said.
“Maine toh kaha tha… aane do mujhe bhi NGO! Lekin, nahi! Tumne hi decide kiya tha na… ki aaj ke din no kaam only aaraam?” She asked. “Aur waise…agar mera vrat hai aur mujhe aaraam karna chahiye… toh tum kyu kaam pe gaye?Tumhaara bhi toh vrat tha na?”
“I’m sorry!” He apologized instantly, pulling away from the hug and holding both his ears. “Abse tum kabhi bhi NGO se chutti nahi logi. Har din aana padega tumhe. Ab na… mujhe wahaan pe tumhaare bina bilkul achcha nahi lagta.”
“Abirrrr! Tum kitna cute ho!” She cooed, pulling his cheeks.
“Woh toh main hu,” he agreed.
“Lekin tum NGO kyu gaye?” She asked. “Rest nahi kar sakte the?”
“Mishtiiii,” he pleaded, holding her hand in his. “Tumhe pata haina… Diwali Mela kitna important hai. Bohot kaam tha.”
“Jo bhi ho, Abir! Next time se agar tumne kabhi bhi vrat rakha, toh tum uss din kaam pe nahi jaoge,” she ordered.
“Lekin…” he started to defend himself.
“Nahi! Koi lekin nahi,” Mishti reprimanded. “Tum apna khayal bilkul nahi rakte, Abir. Maine keh diya na… tum vrat rakhke NGO nahi jaoge toh bas nahi jaoge!”
“Okay! Okay! Ab please violent mat ho jao!” Abir joked.
“Abir… yeh mazaak ki baat nahi hai,” Mishti said. “Tumhe kuch ho jaata toh? Bina khaaye piye itne time tak kaam karne health ke liye achcha nahi hota. Tumhe chakkar aa sakte the, tum behosh bhi ho sakte the! Agar tumhe kuch ho jaata toh?!”
Seeing her get hysterical, Abir quickly pulled her into a hug. “Next time aisa nahi karunga, promise,” he said, trying to pacify her.
Her words had affected him so deeply. No one had ever cared so much, not even his mother, or even Nanu or Kunal. Mishti cared for him in a way that made him feel important, needed, loved. It was the best feeling inthe entire world, and he never wanted to get rid of it.
“I love you,” he muttered, yet again. It seemed as if he couldnever say it enough times. He needed her to know, every second of every day, just how much he loved her. He felt her smile into his chest and pulled her closer, squeezing her tight before letting go. Pulling back, he looked into her eyes and then kissed her forehead once again.
“Happy Karwachauth, Angry Chorni,” he wished her, taking her hand in his and resting his forehead on hers.
“Happy Karwachauth, Ajeeb Raajvansh,” she replied, holding their joined hands close to her heart.
They were together, and in that moment, the world faded away, leaving just them, their love, and this happiness that they felt.
