Long story, I tried to make it short.

Neeli is actually a vengeful spirit who used to roam around and terrorize people. She is a blood thirsty ghost with divine beauty.

In her previous birth, she was born as Alli and she got married to a priest named Nambi in temple.

Nambi married her for her money and regularly cheated on Alli with other women. Disgusted with her son-in-law's behaviour, Alli's mom kicked Nambi out of the house. A pregnant Alli left the house with him.

On the way, Nambi killed Alli to steal her jewels. Her younger brother Ambi, who rushed behind Alli to bring her back saw this and committed suicide. Nambi killed off by snakebite.

Later, Alli and Ambi are born as Neeli and Neelan to Chola king. They used to kill cattle and drink their blood. Chola king realised this and banished both of them.

Later the village seventy chiefs captured both of them. They were able to handle Neelan but handling Neeli was difficult. Neelan was killed.

Nambi was reincarnated as Anandan. Neeli took the form of a woman with a child and made the villagers believe that Anandan was her husband and that he was running away after quarreling with her. He cried and said that she was Neeli, but no one believed him, and the chiefs swore that if the Neeli did anything to him, all of the chiefs would die with him.

Neeli killed Anandan in a cunning way that night. The next morning, seeing Anandan dead, the seventy Chiefs entered the fire to fulfill their promise.

So, this Neeli is actually the main villian in Kathanar story. Kathanar is a christian priest who is considered as one of the legends.
