Why is it that when an ITV actress reaches 35+ she only gets offered supporting character roles? (Obviously there are exceptions but I'm talking about the majority)

Why can't women be portrayed more realistically in ITV?

I'm sure there's no dearth of women actresses to play roles of mothers/grandmothers who are realistically closer to those age groups.

A young mother to a young child, a middle-aged mother of a teenager, older mother to an adult child.

If you want to relate to the masses - surely this is the place to start?

Is there any show on air currently which casts realistically?

Why is natural aging so taboo on ITV?

Disclaimer: I am not age shaming anybody, or any character, or any actor/actress. Genuinely curious as to why older women actresses are excluded from seemingly relevant roles. Seems like a pretty ageist industry.

P.S. Yes, Bollywood is the same but I imagine it would be easier to bring changes to smaller productions in ITV than corrupt antiquated institutions like Bollywood.

The reason is apparent in this forum microcosm itself …girls or boys …age shaming is not done selectively here

thats the reality my friend, all the shows and movies too, they will have a hero who can be 50 but heroine has to be under 25,,,,

I think Kabhi kabhi itefaaq is the show you may want to see...I just saw it recently , so far I like it..

for female actors, I am sure they want to portray the characters their age but with so much competition and young girls going in show business too early its hard to find a role that suits..and even not wanting do portray a mom of a lead who is younger to you, its a job that pays the bills.

Its the sad truth. Even in real world in arranged marriage 30+ men would look for girls who are young 💁‍♀️ there are exceptions.

Even in shows there are some leads who gets a chance to perform like we have drasti dhami, mouni roy hina khan, karishma tanna, sakshi tanwar( not regularly but i have seen them as leads even in their 30s)

But all these actors have really maintained themselves well. Even after maintaining so well some of them won't get that many roles but they are still leads or play important role than nani nana etc.

So basically makers need some one who can fetch them money and now a days fitness is given more importance unless character does not demand for it like bahl needed ram kapoor.

One more reason as experience increases people start demanding for more money. So all the production houses starts bringing new new cast so that they can pay less. Male leads would stay the same if they have maintained really well. But if female leads has some wrinkles or dark circles on their face it would be un appealing for audience as per them so they avoid paying so much instead get some one new.

These actors dont get much work and in the end they will agree for doing side roles with less salary in order to feed their family.

I'd suggest Maddam Sir on Sab TV. Four female leads - one in early 20s, second in late 20s, third in early 30s and fourth in early 50s. Everyone with their unique trait and with very realistic behavior and dressing sense.

At least there is no mahan heroine and anovillain. No crying, screaming and blame game. Everyone are imperfect and learn from their mistakes.
