Chapter 2
The next few hours flew by for Akshara as the coffee shop was busy with customers trying to escape the cold weather. The only other person working was a 17 year old girl named Skyler who spent more time on her phone then actually doing any work.
“Sky, please put your phone away. Do you not see the long line?”
Skyler would roll her eyes, put her phone in her pocket and make two drinks before taking her phone out again and Akshara will tell her to put it away again. Akshara decided to talk to the owner about Skyler later on. Akshara could never understand why everyone was so into their phones. Her own phone was in her backpack, where she had left it when she left her apartment that morning. She only used her phone to listen to music and answer the few calls she got. She was not on any social media site as there was nothing about her life to share and nobody was interested enough for her to share it with.
By the time she was done with closing the shop and cleaning it up, it was 8 PM. She was exhausted and ready to go home. She counted the tips and gave half to Skyler.
“$45.00. Not bad.” Akshara said as she put the money in her backpack and stepped outside. The snow had stopped hours ago and now it was raining. Akshara sighed pulling up the hood of her jacket over her head. Not only was it cold but wet too now. As soon as she started walking, she felt her left sock get wet. There was a hole on her left boot and she decided to finally go buy new boots the next morning with the tip money she just got. She walked the few blocks to the subway with her sock and foot getting wetter with each step. Once she entered the subway, she saw several people sleeping on the ground on cardboard boxes with just their coats covering them from the brutal cold. New York City had a huge homeless population. Akshara could never stand it. She turned around and walked out and found a store 2 blocks away that was still open. She took out her tip money and bought three blankets and walked back into the subway station and gave them to the people sleeping there. I am leaving for India soon anyways so what will I do with winter boots there? Until then I’ll just use some duck tape to cover the hole.
Once she got to her apartment, she hurried and took a shower and put on some warm dry clothes. She decided to take her phone out for the first time that day and saw she had 5 missed calls. Keerti Bua. I’ll call her back tomorrow. But as soon as she put her phone down, it started to ring again.
“Hello, Bua.”
“Akshu? Kahan ho tum? Main kab se phone kar rahi hoon.” Bua said worried.
“I was at work, Bua. I didn’t have a chance to look at my phone.”
“Pehle toh mujhe yeh samaj Nahi aata why you have to work at a coffee shop….”
“NYC is expensive, Bua! I have to find a way to pay for my expenses somehow.” Akshara said laughing. Even though Akshara had several scholarships and grants that helped pay for her education and part of her rent, they didn’t cover everything and neither did her meager salary from her musical therapist internship. So she found the job at the coffee shop to help.
“Akshu beta. I’ve told you so many times to just ask me if you ever need any money and why don’t you use the checks Bade Papa sends every month?” Keerti sighed.
Akshara’s grand-father did send her a check every month and a pretty big amount too. It was his way of showing that the family still remembers her. The monthly checks were the only form of communication she had with her family but Akshara never cashed them and they laid lying in her drawer.
“Bua tell me. How is Krish Bhaiya and Naksh Mamu?” Akshara said changing the subject.
“They are doing good. I called today because you never told me when your graduation date is. Your Gayu Masi and I need to buy our tickets to come from California, na?”
“Is Naksh Mamu coming?”
Keerti got silent before saying “No beta he has an important meeting that day.”
“But you don’t even know what day my graduation is.”
“Aksh…”
“Anyways I’m not attending my gradation. I don’t like going on stage. The school will mail my certificate to me.” Akshara knew everyone else would have their families cheering them on when they walked on that stage and she didn’t need any more reminders that her own family could care less about her.
“Acha tell me when are you going back to India? The family haven’t seen you in so long and everyone is so excited to see you.” Keerti Bua said trying to change the subject. Akshara just laughed. Excited to see her? Her Bade Papa and Badi Mama went to visit Keerti bua every year in California and not once came to see her in NYC.
“Akshu?”
“I don’t know Bua. I haven’t gotten my ticket yet.”
“Let me buy it for you, na? Your graduation present?” Keerti knew her niece well enough to know she will never agree but tried anyways. She was worried about Akshu but more than that, it broke her heart to see her brother and Naira’s daughter be so lonely and so far away from everyone.
“Thank you, Bua but I’ll buy it soon. I’m really tired now. I’ll talk to you later. Good night.” Akshara said hanging up the phone. She sat there for a few seconds trying to control her emotions. Why does Naksh mamu avoid her? Why is her family so indifferent to her? What has she ever done to deserve this? It hurts so bad being so far away from them….how can she go and live with them? Was moving back to India even the right choice? Who was she moving back home for anyways?
Akshara reached for her inhaler on the side of her table as she felt a panic attack coming before collapsing on her bed, crying to sleep as she did on most nights.
+++++++++++++++
Thousands of miles away in India, Abhimanyu Birla woke up just as Akshara was falling asleep. He looked at the time. It was almost noon. Maa didn’t even wake me up. He hurried to the bathroom to take a shower and go downstairs.
“Abhi! Beta tum uth gaye?” Manjiri said as she saw her son walking down the stairs.
“Maa, why didn’t you wake me up earlier? It’s lunch time and I’m just waking up!” Abhi asked annoyed.
“You came home from the hospital at 6 am! You need to rest too, beta.”
“Manjiri is right. Rest is every important for a doctor. Now join us for lunch.” Abhimanyu’s uncle Anand said pointing to a chair next to him. Abhimanyu went and sat in the chair and looked at his family. His mom who doted on him, his uncle and aunt who adored him and pushed him to be the best doctor he could be. His siblings who looked up to him. His only issue was with his father but even then he knew his father loved him dearly. Abhimanyu was the golden child of the family and was grateful to have such a wonderful family. Yet as he looked at his family eating lunch and joking around, he felt like something was missing. At that table and in his life. He had this feeling so often yet he could never understand why. He had everything in his life. A good family, a great career, more wealth then he could ever need. He had everything but the absence of that one thing made him feel like the loneliest person in the world. He so strongly that something or someone was missing in his life that he needed. As if someone far away was calling for him and needed him. But who?
