Akshara's Column: Importance of being a hands-on father

Hi friends…I feel that all fathers should spend time with their child. They should help in taking care of the baby and be a hands-on father.

I had asked Naitik to look after the baby for a little while, as I was busy with something. But Naitik was busy with his office work and hence left the baby unattended. I was very upset to see this and ended up having a fight with him over this issue. I think that it is equally important for a father to take time out from his work and spend some quality time with his child. In fact he should be a hands-on father and also help with small things like changing the baby's nappies, clothes or even putting him to sleep. Spending time and doing little things like this will strengthen the father-child bond as well as help the mother out.

It is not only the duty of the mother, but it is the responsibility of both parents to give time to their child. Sometimes a mother gets really tired and stressed out with having to stay up all night and take care of the baby; at times like this the father too should chip in and help with the baby. Even though the father is often busy with work, he should make time for his child. It is always nice to have family members to help out with the baby, but ultimately it is the parent's responsibility to provide love and care to their child. I am happy that Naitik is a hands-on father as he has helped to take care of the baby, he has helped in changing the baby's clothes and we have taken turns staying up with the baby at night. I know that he will be a doting father.
