"Khush toh bohot ho liya. Ab sochegi ki Siddhant ko bataayein kaise?", she tapped her head. Reckless glee!
She stood in front of the mirror.
"Hello Siddhant. Mere saath party mein chaloge?"
"Nahi yaar, yeh toh bohot direct ho gaya!", she seemed unhappy.
"Tum kiske saath party mein jaa rahe ho?"
"Uff, yeh odd lagega. Question nahi, kuch aur soch Anu"
"Siddhant, tum aaj raat kya kar rahe ho?"
"Nahi pagli! Kitna random hain yeh!", she reprimanded herself.
...
"Siddhant... Party mein jaane ka soch rahe ho?", she asked.
"Kaunsi party!?", he replied rather baffled.
"I mean prom night", she said getting nervous.
He rolled his eyes in embarrassment.
"Nahi... Nahi. Kyun? Tum jaa rahi ho?"
"Main? Nahi toh. Bilkul nahi. Aise hi pooch rahi thi. Vaise bhi kiske saath jaungi", she spoke with sparkling eyes that were hopeful for an answer.
"Aree Siddhant, ab toh boldo!", she thought but instead, he just smiled and walked away.
...
"Yahi toh problem hain humaari, bol hi toh nahi paate", Siddhant remarked to himself, whilst a gloomy smiled played on his lips. 7 years had breezed by but quite nothing had changed between the two. With an unfulfilled wish, he tucked himself to sleep, without the expectation of Anushka offering him her company. He'd well understood her stance and situation regarding parties so, hence he didn't want to look desperate to attend one. And besides, he didn't have the pluck to ask or to face a no.
"Anushka, Siddhant toh bolne se raha", she told herself. "Iss baar bhi nahi bola toh baithi rehna phir, akele", she gruffed and tried to sleep.
Next morning
Siddhant knocked on Anushka's cabin. She was busy speaking to someone so she signalled him to talk later.
Slowly, he moved away from her cabin and entered his. His eyes fell on the fishes. He started feeding them.
His mind was restlessly listing out options to ask Anushka out for the party. It wasn't so difficult but actually, it was. He didn't know how to start or what to tell exactly, without making it sound too desperate or direct.
"Acche hain naa?", she walked upto him. He turned around to find her smiling at him.
"Haan", he replied, a bit lost.
"Kya kaam tha?", she asked.
"Yeh file sign karani thi", he picked it up from his desk and handed it to her.
"Bass, yahi bolna tha?", she tried to bring around the party topic.
He nodded in agreement. Anushka, visibly disappointed, turned around and left.
"Uh!", he scoffed as he banged his hand on the chair. Was it so impossible? Why couldn't he do it?
"Yeh file Mr. Bhatt ko de dena, aaj hi", she reentered his cabin almost immediately.
"Par hum toh kal milenge Bhatt Sir se", he responded.
"Kyun, tum party mein nahi jaa rahe?", she just threw it in his way.
"Woh... Couple party hain. Hum kiske saath jaayein...", he scratched his forehead.
Pause. A fatal pause of crushing three seconds. After Anushka couldn't take anymore of it, she asked him carefully :
"Tum chaloge... Mere saath?"
Her words were so soft and gentle.
He was awestruck for quite sometime.
"Yes, of course", he beamed and tried his best to avoid looking into her eye, what if his eyes revealed his suppressed happiness?
"Phir, aaj raat, 7 o clock. At your house. I'll pick you up", she told.
"Done", he nodded positively.
His smile widened as he felt sheepish as well as ecstatic. That teenage love was seeping back into his calm, old, dry self as he looked forward to something very heartily and eagerly after long. His breath fastened and his chest thudded with his quick paced beats. They had it all set, finally!
"Chalein?", Anushka asked him as they got out of the car.
"Anna, Appa sab wait kar rahe honge", she grinned.
"Wait a minute"
He extended his hand and lowered his gaze
"May I?"
Anushka gladly gave her hand in his. Her heart raced ahead while butterflies took over her belly as she felt his touch.
"Calm", she reminded herself. This was better than she'd expected!
Her black flowing gown matched adorably with his velvet black blazer. She'd kept the hairdo loose and simple as her locks entangled themselves in a low bun. Her face was glowing, not because of artificial stuff but because of his company.
"Name Sir?", asked the guard.
"Anushka Reddy & Siddhant Sinha", he spoke rather admiringly.
His chest swelled with pride, today he had the pleasure of her company. Today, she was his. And he couldn't stop smiling at the way their names were taken together.
The music in the bash was subtle and not so prominent. Her grin widened as she looked by her side, she could see him smiling at the arrangements. And she couldn't help but notice the song :
