Monday 5th June Thread: - It's Ikat Today

Reference-

Ikat, or ikkat, is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employ resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric.

In ikat, the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed. The bindings may then be altered to create a new pattern and the yarns dyed again with another colour. This process may be repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multi-coloured patterns. When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth. In ikat, the resist is applied to the yarns before they are woven into cloth. Because the surface design is created in the yarns rather than on the finished cloth, in ikat both fabric faces are patterned.

A characteristic of ikat textiles is an apparent "blurriness" to the design. The blurriness is a result of the extreme difficulty the Weaver has lining up the dyed yarns so that the pattern comes out perfectly in the finished cloth. The blurriness can be reduced by using finer yarns or by the skill of the craftsperson. However, the blurriness that is so characteristic of ikat is often prized by textile collectors.

So, Today's episode Sorryluscious' or better explained as SareeLuscious'.

It is interesting, how Aru and Mukhi are two stubborn people, completely not ready to give up. Like the knots of the Ikat, Mukhi resists the dyes of trust which Aru wants to paint him with.

The episode begins with the comically scheming Rami and her Spiderman Lalji rejoicing in jubilation.

(Hungry Lalji. Why is he always bhukha ? And look at Rami. She is excited to see her plan and Lalji still eyeing his food)

Both are the wooden framework on which Aru and Mukhi's Ikat weaving threads are wrapped.

It is extremely funny how the yarn of Mukhi can resist the dye, tied with knots like that of the Ikat. Aru or the shining star Arundhati is the color which tries to reach everywhere, her heart is as pure as gold.

She is unadulterated like a dye, of extremely pure color. It is fabulously colored and colors the fabric it reaches. But it's difficult to do the same when you have knots in the yarns as Mukhi keeps on shuttling between anger and trust.

Like the Ikkat pattern, his perception towards Aru's intelligence', borders Blurriness'. Destiny, the Weaver is trying to line up the dyed yarns together but the blurriness is so evident. This blurriness is also pointed out by Aru by the end of the chaos.

She laments about the fact that Mukhi has shifting mood swings. One day he trusts her, the very next day he scolds her. How long will that happen?

Varjish at Bayalish

By the way, at 42, Mukhi, I must say is quite a strong man. He flung the suitcase flexing his muscles. I thought, it might reach and hit Chammoo in the projectile trajectory. I bet, he exercises.

CV's

* Ahem Ahem* Can we get this man exercising and the Sheher ki Chokhri Drooling*

Look at the swing. I feel like whistling😆

Trying to Alternate Bindings

Wait, did I see a little hurt in Aru's eyes when she though Mukhi considered her as a culprit? It was a sheer moment of a child being traumatized by an allegation from the parent, she looks up to. Why Aru? Why did Mukhi's approval and viewpoint about you matter to you?

Chaotic Expression? Aru ??

Aren't you this carefree girl, who cares a hoot about the consequences and listens to her heart? Or is your heart beating against time?

Later, we see, Mukhi being delightfully surprised how Aru has an admiration and respect for his teachings. As, I said, here Aru, like the Ikat is changing the knots of Mukhi's resistance and trying to create multi-coloured patterns.

Kinna Sona lag raha hai

It may be blurred for now, but the patterns have started to fall in place. Who else saw a great sigh from Mukhi, part amazed, part admiration when he recalls his own teachings being mouthed by Aru?

Silent Apology -The Warp Ikat

First the yarns--cotton, silk, wool or other fibresare wound onto a frame. Then they are tied into bundles. The warp yarns are then wrapped tightly with thread or some other dye-resistant material to prevent unwanted dye permeation. The procedure is repeated, depending on the number of colours required to complete the design. Multiple colorations are common, requiring multiple rounds of tying and dyeing. The newly dyed and thoroughly washed bundles are wound onto the loom to produce the warp (longitudinal yarns). Warp threads are adjusted for the desired alignment for precise motifs.

I love the pattern here. Look at how angry Aru is😆

The situation is like that of the Warp Ikat. Mukhi has now tied the different fibres that Aru is made up of, cotton-like fearlessness, silk-like understanding, wool like honesty on to the frame of their equation.

What I particularly liked here is that Aru, now forcefully ties the thread to prevent the color of apology from Mukhi paint her.

The dye, however, doesn't give up. Mukhi- the dye now, like the warp Ikat repeats the procedure and makes this innocent puppy face for an apology.

*Aww who would not fall in love with this 42-year-old Dukhi Mukhi*.

His apology did reach Aru's heart but she needed to be aligned, I mean carried in Mukhi's arms.

I loved, how she ran and jumped inside the house saving both, the extreme embarrassment and making us viewers pull our hair. *Daffod Aru*

Piche nahi Ja Sakta -Deewar Hai- The Weft Ikat

Weft ikat uses resist-dyeing for the weft yarns. The movement of the weft yarns in the weaving process means precisely delineated patterns are more difficult to weave. The weft yarn must be adjusted after each passing of the shuttle to preserve the pattern.

See, this is what I have been talking about always. They share both parent-child dynamics, more than man-woman interactions. The weft yarn, the delicacy of their relationship must be adjusted after each passing shuttle or argument. That's why their weaving is difficult like the weft Ikat.

Jhansi ki Rani😆

The Child Aru is extremely angry and resorts to hankering. And then, we see a hilarious dialogue from the episode, "Deewar hai, piche nahi ja sakta'. Indeed, it is true for their relationship. The age is a huge wall' in their relationship. Mukhi cannot go back in time when Aru tries to push him. It will be Aru, who will probably have to step back and allow Mukhi some space and flexibility.

Dukhi Mukhi Saree hai'- The Epic Fall and Fail- The Double Ikat

Double Ikat is created by resist-dyeing both the warp and weft prior to weaving.

This form of weaving requires the most skill for precise patterns to be woven and is considered the premiere form of ikat. The amount of labour and skill required also make it the most expensive.

He si controlling his mood watching his clothes scattered everywhere.😆

It was a hilarious outburst. The child Aru got thrilled when the parent Mukhi apologizes. She not only forgives him instantly but also rejoices like a child who has been just treated with her favorite fluffy sugar sweet cotton candy.

I almost flipped looking at her mini jig and Mukhi wondering about his newly appointed adjective 'Dukhi'.

Dancing with a sense of euphoria and extreme happiness, she trips and their relationship comes back to square one again.

Dukhi Mukhi??? Expression hain😆

Before creating a perfect Ikat, both Aru and Mukhi need to dye each other. No matter how many thread knots they tie to resist dying, but at the end they must create patterns like the double ikat which requires multiple weavings. Things don't look easy as yet or do they?

😲😲 I looovvveee the metaphor of wall as age you've used here!
😲 what can I say you've rewritten the whole episode~it's like watching it again with my soul rather than just eyes like the first time😳

Any thoughts on why they'd show the photo of Mukhi-Mishri getting shattered by Aru?😕 By standard hindi soap law, this looks like an aphshagun.

Loved your analysis Piu- must say your post was WOVEN beautifully as the Ikkat:) You have a talent for writing! Loving it :)

Although the age difference is a huge gap- I think its easy to forget when we see them together. More I look at them I see less of the age gap and more of how their different circumstances have forged them.
Aru is young but also she is the bread winner of the family- she was the glue that bound them - she was the sounding board for sister (what an IDIOT she is ;)))) Mum and Dad. She was the MUKHIJI of her family - where she led they followed.
Mukhji being the only male heir (jeez rolls eyes) was the man in command and seems to have been gaw ka mukhi straight out of nappies ;)))))
So the dynamic between them are fun to watch as they are both 'heads' (stubborn heads at that) thrown together. I am seeing less age barriers everyday more 'speed' barriers ;))) Aru is like the Hare and Mukhi the Tortoise- fun watching this race!!

Jane :)
