Call her Reema Gujral — the rich, sophisticated, innocent and intense girl from Ye Meri Life Hai, call her Pam, the comical vamp in Shararat on Star Plus or call her Simple Kaul, what she is in reality. This hardcore showbiz buff from Delhi knew right from childhood that the entertainment industry is where she wants to be.
So, Kaul paid heed to her calling and came to Mumbai after doing theatre for over a year in Delhi. After giving a lot of auditions, Simple started working in three-odd months. Since then, as goes the clich, there has been no looking back! Simple began her stint in TV with Kkusum and in the meanwhile also bagged a role in Shararat. Then happened YMLF, which changed her life. "These three years that I've been in the industry have been great. I simply love the profession. It's like a real-life journey, where something new happens everyday — new emotions and situations," Simple says. But it isn't for too long that something new happens in serials these days. After a point, all the actors complain of stagnation and the audience cribs about the serial going nowhere.
"Yes, there are times when nothing new is happening in a serial, that is the time when one must take a break and rest for a while before returning rejuvenated," she says simply. For her, such breaks translate to exercising and singing. Yes, Simple has trained in Hindustani classical
singing for five years, but, "likes to sing only for herself," and has been too busy to pursue it seriously. However, a secondary role in YMLH and the caricaturish role in Shararat are hardly worth being written home about, when there are Tulsis, Parvatis, Poojas and Jassis ruling the roost.
Not for Simple, though, as she asserts, "I have to really enjoy what I am doing and connect with the character; I don't mind even if it is not the central character. Anyway, being the lead means giving it too much dedication and time." But it also means fame and moolah which are directly proportional! "At least, I can do two shows at a time because I have the time and not do the same monotonous stuff day in day out. You don't have a life if you are the main protagonist, because the show cannot do without you. If I were also to be the main lead, I wouldn't get time for my work outs and singing," she says.
Other than serials, Simple is interested in Bollywood too. "But I want a role in which I can make an impact. Being a TV actor, I cannot dream to get the main role, but even if my role is for five minutes, I want it to be strong. I think every TV actor who wants to get into films must keep this in mind," she says. As of now, Simple is doing only two shows — YMLF and Shararat — but it's not about numbers but performances, and she is doing simply great!
