Chapter 1

Preeti felt a knot in her stomach. She peered up, her head reeling from the monumental immensity of what she saw. She expected to be confronted with an antiquated building but in its place stood a cold stark high rise building, its unwelcoming windows, imprisoned within its

hollow shrouds, foreboding looking interiors evoking an emptiness yet brimming as if with deep forbidden secrets. Not a window among the sprawl dissimilar to the other but each one self contained by its own isolation. Filling the air with bitter despair.

As Preeti crossed over the threshold into the entrance she gazed up at the infinitely neverending walls that towered high up floating into a pitch dark abyss. Where sunlight was swallowed up by the cavernous ceilings and hallways and saturated instead by harsh, blunt cold artificial lights. Here time stood still. No passing of daylight touched these bleak cold walls. No memories ingrained here. It reeked of a gloom desperately cloaked by the flooding of eerily bright unnatural light.

Her previous school had been an old decaying dump of a place but snug and a place that all students felt as if they belonged to. This was much worse. There was nothing about this place that gave her that warm cosy feeling.

The hall was slowly filling up with excited commotion of college students and Preeti had to tiptoe to see what all the fuss was about. All eyes were focussed on the entrance doors that flung wide open. Preeti shielded her eyes from the shafts of light that pierced through rendering the 4 figures that stood there into black silhouettes. The familiar feeling of inferiority washed over her as she craned her neck to get a proper peek at them, dread settling into the pit of her stomach. The F4.

There was always one of these gangs in every college. She didn't understand the fad. They were not only popular

among the students but the teachers too. It was considered an honour to be around them. They stepped across the threshold in synchronised fashion and made their walk down the hallway, a gang of exceptionally good looking smartly dressed guys, glowing from the sunrays that filtered in and bathed them in a ring of light reaching no other, making their skin gleam like gold, their eyes glitter like stars. Heavy metal music shattered the corridors as if to announce their arrival as they strutted in with style looking straight ahead. A grand dramatic entrance afforded by the squeals of the college girls who idolized them and excited murmurs of the college boys who aspired to be like them. They appeared to be indifferent to the great deal of attention they were receiving, that Preeti assumed were a part of their daily life wherever they happen to walk. Crowds of people scrambled past in a mad frenzy all with the urgency to get a glimpse of the famous gang while they quickly became swamped by the flurry of students flocking around them. Preeti scowled as a bunch of loud girls jostled their way to the front, clamouring for their attention. A cold look was thrown by one of the guys to one person who dared to get too close. The crowds slowly paved way for them to either side of the grand cavernous hallway as they emerged into full view to all. She watched them saunter pass her like celebrities basking in the glory of what they were and Preeti wondered why everyone gave them special treatment. Simply because there were well to do? Powerful? Successful? Handsome? She looked to her side and saw Swati her best friend looking at them seemingly hypnotized. She had lost her.

Oh great, you too.' Preeti remarked in her habitual sarcasm. She wasnt normally one to conform to the masses especially when it came to trivial things like boys. The F4 left the hallway and slowly the crowd dispersed as the fervor wore off and everyone parted ways for their 1st period.

I think I have a favourite one already..' Swati said dreamily. Preeti rolled her eyes. The guy with the smiling eyes' she said blushing.

It could have been any one of them for all Preeti knew, she hadnt given them a second glance.

Preeti flopped her head down and let out a sigh of fatigue. She had barely passed the day and she was already feeling overwhelmed. The ceaseless jabbering of her classmates lingered like background noise. She was growing sick of their senseless chatting that consisted of what F4 were wearing, their swagger, who had the best smile, hairstyle, body and so on, as if the people here had nothing better to talk about, even the teachers were in full praise of them saying how they were an example for all of the students to follow. Preeti had rolled her eyes at that and the teacher had launched into a lecture to put her in her place while the other students threw her looks of derision at her apparent gall to disrespect F4. What had she come to? Was this place owned by the F4 that she couldn't even roll her eyes to express herself?! Were people so deluded to not see that F4 weren't gods. She had no plan on encountering them today. Not at all. Yet as her luck would have it, she crossed them in the corridor. Her gaze scanned over to the throng of the 4 young men now huddled near their lockers in the middle of confrontation with another student.

I'm going to give you up to the count of 3 to take the tie off''

Vicky bhai please, I wore it in your honour, I wasn't trying to copy your style!'

The guy called Vicky looked at him nonchalantly. One'

Vicky come on'

Two'

Dude come on'

Three...Parth why dont you do him the honour.' Parth looked knowingly at Vicky and smirked before pouring a bottle of coke down the guys top. Parth tightened the guy's tie a bit more and swatted his hand against him.

Much better.' He teased.

Vicky shook his head jeeringly.

Go clean yourself up and get out of my sight.' The guy stumbled away before Vicky yanked him by his collar again

One more thing. Dont call me dude.' He shoved him away while the guy stared at him looking shocked.

Go on then, get out of here!' Parth jeered as the guy looked at them confused before heading towards the bathroom. The gang chuckled amongst themselves when the guy was out of sight.

Preeti looked at them feeling disgusted. Yet as much as she wanted to give them a piece of her mind she wasn't used to boys. She had come from a girls school and she felt a knot of dread at the prospect of having to just go pass them. She tried to slip past them discretely but to little avail as they gradually turned their attention to her. Being the only other person in the hallway, and there being 4 of them did not help.
Walk away Preeti.

They watched her now with critical eyes as she walked past, not speaking a word. Preeti felt unsettled by their silent stares but avoided eye contact hoping they would leave her alone. Even though she was itching to put them in their place after what they had done to that poor boy, she was making silent promises to not get involved in anyones affairs. She had been drifting through each day watching time float by, minding her own business. She intended to keep it that way.
Let nature and destiny run their course, they would payback for their errors in time.

'Laundiya!' Came the crude call of one of them from behind her. Dont listen to him Preeti, just walk away.

'Hey I was talking to you' He called after her.

It was pointless. Affecting ignorance when the hallways were dead silent would look ridiculous, especially here where the walls carried echoes for miles. Preeti dropped her head in resignation and halted in her tracks, gradually becoming engulfed by their towering shadows as they edged towards her from behind. So much for keeping a low profile.

She turned around to meet them feeling dwarfed by their height. Preeti was quite short and sometimes it bothered her when people tried to intimidate her like these 4 appeared to be doing now. She never let them though, and wouldn't be now however scared she felt being in new unfamiliar surroundings and being confronted by the so called F4. She assumed the voice belonged to the well built broad chested, tall guy who stood slightly ahead of the other 3. The leader, Vicky. His thumbs were hitched in his pockets and he wore an expression of indifference even though he had called her over. He seemed like the toughest of the lot. To his left was a fair, lean looking boy, wearing all black, a ring in his ear who regarded Preeti darkly from head to toe. Where the leader was good looking in a rough edged kind of way, this one had boyish good looks, perhaps he was the youngest, Preeti thought. The other 2 were typical prince charming lookers with a sparkle in their eyes, and playfulness in their smiles suggesting mischief..she would bet on her life that they were the notorious casanovas of the group. The 4 guys stood before her watching her silently. But Preeti stood her ground seemingly unfazed by their veiled attempt to assert their masculinity. Keep your calm girl.

'Can I help you?' She asked her irritability not failing to creep its way to the surface.

Vicky approached her and angled his head down to look into her face but she looked away awkwardly feeling a little invaded as he crossed her personal space.

Who are you?' His voice was low and his expression changed as he scrutinised her curiously.

Preeti.' Came her rather timid reply as she backed up a step.

'Hm. Preeti. Ironic. New here aren't you?' His tone deadpan.

What does it matter to you? She nodded and looked up at him not faltering her gaze not wishing to indulge him in conversation.

His eyes gleamed as he watched her. There was something charming about him but she couldn't quite pinpoint what it was. Or maybe she was thinking that out of fear. He had a dangerous appeal about him making him someone not to mess with. To observe from a distance which is exactly what she intended to do before now.

"You look lost. Where are you headed?" Spoke the 3rd guy at the back breaking the deadening silence as the leader and Preeti locked eyes. Like the leader he clearly worked out and was not shy to show it. A smile which could easily bypass as a warm, kind smile from anyone else other than her, lingered on his face reaching his eyes, but it didn't give Preeti any assurance that these guys were talking to her out of pity. He was probably the one Swati was smitten with.

'Nowhere, I can find my own way.' She said dubiously. She spun on her heel and made to leave when the guy swerved before her blocking her way.

'Whats the hurry?' Preeti winced as he stood before her with that captivating smile still playing on his lips.

"Aww Bas, dont scare the poor thing. We would like to make you feel welcome here" came the sly voice of the guy called Parth, who walked towards her. This one had spiky hair, pointy features and eyes that spelled trouble. He was strikingly fine-looking and had a femininity to his looks.

Preeti subconsciously clutched tightly onto her books using it as a barrier, trying to make sense of what was going on. Why she was being targeted. Maybe it was because she had been a witness to that scene and they were afraid she would tell on them.

Meanwhile the 2nd guy remained silent, he hadn't taken his eyes off Preeti even for a split second.

'What Parth is trying to say is we are happy to show you around.' spoke the leader throwing a warning look in Parth's direction. Preeti fumbled again with her books. Show her around? At what cost?

'Um really Im fine, I dont want to disturb you as Im sure you all have places to go'

The leader smirked raising one thick eyebrow then lowered his head. He started to circle her.

'Actually we have a free period so we aren't going anywhere..and neither are you.' He met her eyes again and stepped casually toward her making her by instinct move back till she bumped against the quiet guy treading on his shoe. She turned around raising her hand apologetically but he only smiled. An innocent smile she noted.

'Ah don't be frightened baby girl' the leader said serenely from behind her. He yanked the book from out of her hand and read its title.

'Mastering the violin's bow' he drawled

'Give that back..please' Preeti said turning sharply to him trying to keep her voice calm.

'What a nice coincidence, our Raghav here can teach you how to play, he's better than the teacher.' He flung his arm around the quiet guy. Raghav simply looked at Preeti a hint of a smile playing at the corner of his mouth. She didnt detect any innocence in that.

Preeti inhaled trying not to get off on the wrong foot of these troublemakers. They didnt seem to have any purpose to all this except to taunt her as the new kid on the block.

'Listen give me my book back please. Im getting late for my first class as it is' the transparency of her impatience making itself clear to them.

Aww give the baby her book back Vicky' Parth said mockingly.

'Sure. Only once you tell us where you're headed, bacchi.' Relax Preeti, just walk away..

'Why is that important?'

'Because we asked you a question to which we expect you to answer.' He replied in a serious tone. What did they want from her?

Im going to the science lab' she lied.

Dont think that you can go unseen or unheard in a place like this. I have my eyes and ears on everyone here, and a sweet little girl like you isn't going to get past our notice.'

Preeti glared at him. Dont say it Preeti.

'Why are you some kind of god that everyone worships here?! You don't fool me you spoiled insolent privileged son of a ...'. Now you've done it.

Vicky looked at her with slight surprise. In just a flicker of a moment she had gone from being shy as a doe eyed deer to a fearless tigress. No one had dared talk back to him before. Especially not some fresh new student, least of all a girl..yet he knew from the first instant that she was the one. The one who had dared to question their dominance, the one who had been dismissive about F4's importance from what the juniors fed back to him.

'What did you say?' He spoke dangerously. The atmosphere was so thick with tension settling like ominous clouds over them.

I said You don't fool me you spoiled insolent privileged son of a ...' she scoffed while he stared at her in disbelief.

'Just because all the teachers and other kids revere you here does not mean I am going to. You think you lot can just cruise through life getting what you want at your own beck and call just because that's what you want! As if you own this place!' Her increasing annoyance simply amused them as she looked irrately at them noticing the exchange of amused looks they gave to one another.

We do own this place'. Raghav spoke for the first time, eyeing Preeti interestedly. Preeti swallowed. No freaking way.

...Pardon?'.

Raghav shook his head and smiled seeing realisation dawn upon her.

Thats right bacchi, maybe its better you come informed before hurling your insults at us.' Parth sneered while Basant sniggered. The guys were clearly enjoying seeing her troubled by that news as she shuffled her feet ackwardly.

Oh yeh, so what? That doesn't give you any right to be a nasty..heartless.. bunch of snobs!!!' Preeti spluttered.

Vicky made a move to grab her but was immediately pulled back by Raghav. Vicky shrugged Raghav off him and yanked his collar up taking a step closer to her. Preeti squinted up at him in defiance.

"Vicky, calm yourself yaar, shes not worth your time. Lets go to class or we'll be late.'

'If you weren't a girl your smart ass remark would've earned you a good beating.'

He glared at her before swivelling around and stormed off with his crew following in his gait. Raghav stole a furtive glance at her before he left too. Swati came to her side. Preeti hadnt realised that her clash with the F4 had caused such a ruckus that the corridor had suddenly filled up with students rushing to catch their face off. Hush whispers spread around which Preeti tried her best to ignore.

'Yaar you were wicked' Preeti smiled at her friend who was beaming with admiration for her.

'I mean no one has the guts to stand up to them. But today you broke that. Actually Im afraid for you'.

Oh please Swati, there's nothing to them. I doubt I'll be seeing them again if I can help it.'

Oh you sweet summer child, you really are innocent.'

So are you.'
