This is what happens when we read lutyens history, british version of history and what media shows us.
Dowry as a system started in pre independence era to secure the future of girls in theie in laws place as those days child marriages were prevalent n men would die at younger age.
This dowry amout or sthree dhan would be useful for that woman to take care of herself and be independent. Even today, dowry amount or any gifts the bride gets are on the bride's name only.

However, post independence era, people started using dowry as a means of torturing the girl if she is not their choic for bahu .

There is one more thing called kanyashulk where, boy's family gives reverse dowry and marry the girl. This practice is no.longer in existence.

Eversice section 498A came into picture, a lot of false cases are being filed by women to trouble their in laws though there is no valid reason.

Dowry per se is not an evil practice, but few people made it evil with their greed for money.

aaj kal.koi dowry nahi leta. Ulta they even ask girl's family not to give any gifts for boy's side of family. Girl side kharcha girl ke family aur boy side boy ka family uthatha hain. Atleast in tamil brahmins.

this custom is to basically assure the girl that she is still their daughter qnd she has a right on her birth home and family. A way of maintaining relationship with daughters if we remove feminist glasses and see.
Atleast thats what my mom.taught me.

i am an iyer too . Upto mangalsutra rasm expenses are by girls and even all the jewellery they buy for the girl is on her name only. Once mangalsutra is tied, havan, bidaai, gruhapravesh and next day's sumangali prardhana and reception.expenses are from boy's side. There's no formal dowry in my subsect.
