The attitude of Sameer's maternal aunt towards her daughter in law does not reflect how educated ladies behaved in the 1990s. It does nothing to add to the popularity of the show; in fact it distracts the viewers from the main theme of the show, which is the resurrected romance of Naina and Sameer, which is blossoming at the College where they both study.

I think that she is just trying to be strict with poonam. Like she doesn't want to but it's forced. Because she does recognize her talents and she tries to be stricter because it was love-arranged marriage. This mentality will be there regardless which generation. If she didn't like poonam then she would have made her wash off the mehendi from her hands also.

I think they wanted to portray how daughters vs daughter-in-laws were treated...and continue to be treated in families...bahu bahu hoti hai aur beti beti kind of attitude...I don't really like mami, especially after she berated Naina the way she did...but yeah thodi kahani aage khinchni padegi na hehe
