"Here, take these notes".
Swati barged into Naina's room, and plonked herself on the chair next to Naina's bed.
"This is it? I thought there will more pages." Naina asked weakly. The week long flu had left her very tired. She hardly fell ill, but when she did it would make her life hell. Being confined to her room for so many days and not being able to go to collage had made her so irritable;she had started snapping at anyone and everyone. She knew she was being unreasonable. But not seeing Sameer was an absolute torture. Preeti wisely kept her distance and had made Swati to bring the notes.
"Yes. This is it. Many of our lecturers are also ill. So we had more free periods this week." Swati replied.
"Did you talk to Sameer? How is he?" Swati rolled her eyes at an anxious Naina.
"He is fine. In fact he is enjoying himself thoroughly since you are not there" Swati teased.
"What do you mean?"
"Well..."
"Just spit it out. Don't stretch this like a chewing gum."
"Okay Okay. Fine. But don't kill the messenger."
"Fine. I will not get angry with you."
"Promise?"
"Promise. Now tell everything."
"Then listen. When you are at collage, he is always somewhere around you. Now that you are absent, he has more free time. And those two girls, Priya and Diya, are now working their charm on your man. You should see them, especially in canteen. Asking him if he needs cold drinks, snacks and whatnot. And today they also asked if he can help them with homework."
Naina felt as though she was asked to take a week's worth of medicine at one go and that too without water. Such was the bitterness she felt that she forgot what honey tasted like.
"And what did Sameer do?" Naina asked faintly.
"Are you mad of what? Don't tell me you are doubting him!" Sawti scolded.
"NO! I am not doubting him and I never will. I was just curious. That's all." Naina pacified.
"You know Sameer. He always try very hard not to be rude to girls. He politely declined them every time. Anyway, I have to go now . My mom is waiting for me. See you." Swati breezed out of the room.
For a long time Naina was still on the outside. But her heart was in chaos. Of course she trusted Sameer. It was never about trust. Somewhere along they way she had developed a kind of self-doubt which stemmed from childhood. The daily talks of Preeti's marriage reopened her wounds on a daily basis. Not being that much interested in studies, Preeti was all set for marriage. Everyday there were discussions about some guy, some party, which her uncles had heard about. And her eldest aunt never failed to plant her poisonous words on Naina's fertile soul. If one day it was about her lack of beauty, the next day it was about her lack of dowry. Once it was her attitude and lack of feminine grace. And everything would repeat; day after day.
No matter how much she tried to tell herself that she was not envious, she was only fooling herself. She was envious of Sameer's easy charm, envious of Preeti for having loving parents and that don't care attitude. She was also envious of those girls who were confidant enough to try to get something they wanted.
For how long she was in her nightmare she did not knew. All Naina knew was that she was desperate to meet Sameer. She was burning. She did not know if it was her fever, her jealousy, or her anguish. She wanted to feel the love she always found in Sameer's eyes. She wanted to bathe in the affection she always felt in his embrace, in every touch, in every kiss.
She very well knew she was being illogical and irrational right now. She knew she was not without any merits. She was topper, an achiever, she had friends, family, and Sameer who loved her for sure. But Logic and emotions never intersected. No matter how many Venn diagrams you draw, they belonged to different sets. So, she continued to be buried under her misery.

"Shefali, wait.."
"What is it Sameer? And why are you shouting?" Shefali tuned to find Sameer panting after running along the corridor to catch up with her.
"How is Naina? Is she getting better? When she is coming to collage?" Sameer asked breathlessly.
"Hold on Romeo. Take a deep breath. Your Sipahi is better now. "
"Sipahi?!"
"Yeah. She was your Sipahi right? And not your Juliet? " Shefali asked mischievously.
Sameer was suddenly transported to the day when he saw her wearing that stupid get up with that stupid mustache. He chuckled as he remembered Naina in that get up. Munna and Naina..no, Sipahi had definitely bonded over their mutual heartbreak that day.
"Share the joke with me also." Shefali asked.
"You should have seen Naina in her Sipahi get up. She was looking so funny. I hardly could control my laugh during rehearsals." Sameer had difficulty controlling his laughter. He suddenly remembered that Shefali is Naina's close friend, he hurriedly pleaded "But please don't tell her this."
"This is very bad Sameer. I thought you loved her and here you are making fun of her."
"Come on Shefali. You know I love her very much. But, with this love comes the right to tease her. If I don't to get to tease her once in a while, then whom will I tease?"
"But still..."
"No Ifs and Buts. And Naina is no less I tell you. Do you know how many times I have listened to her laughing in my face about our first date? " Sameer pouted.
"What did happen on your first date?" Shefali asked curiously. Sameer muttered something to himself, and all Shefali could hear was something about a temple and a cow's tail.
"I did not hear you properly. Tell me louder this time." Shefali asked again.
"Forget about that. Now tell me you wont talk about this to Naina." Sameer bought the topic back to the current issue.
"No No. I will not tell. Let's just say she was a pretty Sipahi." Shefali replied, mentally making a note to ask Naina about this first date.
"The prettiest Sipahi I have ever seen." Sameer replied solemnly. "Deal? " he held out his hand.
"Deal!" Shefali shook her hands with him. And they broke into laughter still holding their hands.
"What is going on here? Why are you making commotion in the hallway? Everyone is looking at you guys" Arjun shouted at the pair of them and looked pointedly at their hands.
Sameer raised his eyebrows at the hint of possessiveness in Arjun's tone and he thought to himself that Naina was right, there was something between these two.
"I was asking Shefali how Naina is doing." Sameer answered.
"My sister is fine. Do not concern yourself with her well being. I am there with her and in fact of her whole family is with her."
Sameer rolled his eyes at Arjun. Mr. Ex-Headless Boy never failed to refer Naina as his sister, as if not saying her name in Sameer's presence would make Sameer and Naina's relationship disappear.
"But she would still be missing me." Sameer replied back with an arrogant smile.
"Whatever! Shefali come. We have to head home."
