The eighth day of Navratri festival is known as "Ashtami". On this day, Maa Mahagauri is worshipped, who is the eighth manifestation of the Goddess Durga. The meaning of her name is Maha (great or extreme) and Gauri (white complexion). The very beautiful Maa Mahagauri rides on a white vrishabha (bull) and wears pure white clothes adorned with white ornaments.

It is a custom to wash the feet of these nine young girls as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then offer new clothes as gifts by the devotee. Kanya puja as a part of Devi worship is to recognise the feminine power vested in the girl child and to give them as much importance in the social fabric as the so-called heir apparents (boys) who are otherwise known to be pampered in an average household.

If the worshiper is desirous of acquiring knowledge then he should worship a Brahmin girl child. If he is desirous of acquiring power, then he should worship a Kshatriya-girl child. Similarly if he is desirous of acquiring wealth and prosperity, then a girl child belonging to a Vaishya family should be worshipped by him. There is also a ritual purification and chanting of mantras. She is made to sit on a special pedestal. She is worshiped by offering akshat (rice grains) and by burning incense sticks. She is worshipped because, according to the philosophy of Striyah Samastastava Devi Bhedah', women symbolize Mahamaya (The goddess Durga). Even among these a girl child is considered to be the purest, because of her innocence.

On the 9th day Kanya Puja (the worship of young girls who have not reached the age of puberty) is performed. Nine girls represent the nine forms of the Goddess Durga or Divine Mother. Their feet are washed, tilak is applied to their foreheads, and they partake in a feast of pooris, halwa, and black gram, a sweet dish like kheer. They are offered new clothes and fruits by those who perform this ceremony.

The Nine Forms of Goddess Durga

Depending on the region, different forms of the Goddess Durga are worshipped. The forms are:

  • Durga, the invincible
  • Bhadrakali, the auspicious and fortunate
  • Amba or Jagdamba, Mother of the universe
  • Annapoorna, the giver of food
  • Sarvamangala, the giver of joy all around
  • Bhairavi, the terrifying
  • Chandika, the violent
  • Lalita, the beautiful
  • Bhavani, the giver of life
  • Mookambika, the one who listens
