I'm Done With Divyanka Tripathi, and here's why.
July 10, 2016Posted in EntertainmentTagged Divyanka Tripathi, Vivek DahiyaFor those who know me know for a fact how much I adore Divyanka Tripathi. There was this phase till a few months back when I was gaga about her.
And for sure, I was very happy that she was getting married. Almost all of my friends sent me the BT article when her wedding date was announced, and I could not be happier. A girl who had her heart broken once, finding love again and getting married. Such an adorable, relatable thing.
What I was not expecting was what was coming ahead. Initially, it all started with the basic weekly articles on websites and BT about her wedding. Various publications started writing about her wedding theme, the fact that it will be a destination wedding..so on and so forth. Still understable. I knew that it was going to be one of the most talked about' weddings of the industry. And surely, there would be a hype around it.
Then, it got bad. What started off as aww' worthy articles here and there turned into desperate, attention - seeking efforts to be in the media at all given times. Now, I'm a publicist too. I know that the right limelight needs to be there when your client is one of the top actors of the industry. But at what cost? DiVek's PR team surely did not care about quality, as much as they did for quantity.
The point where it started getting overboard was when she did a PR stunt like Wedding Shopping with AajTak'. It was appalling that something like this was happening. Isn't wedding somewhat a private affair? Aren't some details supposed to be for you and your partner only? A publicist's duty is to filter the media attention your client gets, so that the audience gets quality content.
What was happening in this scenario was that the audience was being bombarded with wedding content. From Mangalsutrra shopping, to the couture that was designing her lehnga.. everything was out there for the audience to know. Her marriage started looking like a PR activity instead.
And it's not really her fault. Actors don't really understand how this stuff works. For them, any publicity is good. As a publicist, I know how bad a media move this was. You just CANNOT give out every detail to the media. The reason people still crave for SRK to tweet is because there's a distance, a gap between them and him. The mystery that engulfs a star is what differentiates them and makes them special to their audience. The audience should want to know everything about the favorite actors, but only limited content should be given out to them.
Even as the audience, I was disappointed. It was as though content was thrown at my face. After a point, I did not even bother opening the article because it was so saturating. And this was me, being a regular viewer's point of view. People who never even watched her show, or Indian TV for that matter, were tired of the constant harrowing behavior.
From This is what her wedding card looks like' to This is what her Mehndi looks like', the aww-worthy wedding turned into a attention - seeking PR stunt. "I think she's marrying just for the the publicity" to "Who is she and why should I care for her wedding?" - the comments on various articles were disheartening.
So here's a little tip to publicists in general, don't do this to your client because at the end of the day, perceptions change & so do attitudes.
As much as I have liked and adored her initially, these days I'm so saturated that the moment I see one more article, I can't help but roll my eyes.
Publicists, don't be that PR. Audience, ask for some intelligent content please. Stop reading shit.
Peace Out.
