Meri Maa

"And the last honour of today's footbal tournament, the Man of the Match goes to Aditya Kumar Bhalla from India International School" announced the compere.

"Yes yes yes" squealed Adi as he hopped towards the stage to receive his award.

IshiMaa is going to be super happy. What a splendid way to welcome her back home Adi thought as he posed for the pictures with the trophy in his hands.

Few days ago he had come home to celebrate holi with his family on his grandmother's insistence. And he was completely taken by surprise when he got to know that IshiMaa is still alive and her death was staged by his Papa and IshiMaa to save her from Nidhi.

The moment he laid his eyes on her he felt alive and he did not want to go back for the tournament.
But his IshiMaa had urged him to go back "Ab to mai wapas agayi hoon na. Ab tumhe chodkar kahin nahi jaaungi" She had said.

"Promise aap kahin nahi jaaogi na" he had asked and for the first time in life he had heard his IshiMaa say "Adi Promise"

It was a strange feeling of belongingness in that moment when she had pinched her throat and assured him. And in the spur of the moment he had agreed and decided to resume his tournament.

And then after 2 days he came to know that his IshiMaa was shot by Nidhi and he felt the floor beneath him slip away. He had cried and fought that he wanted to go back. But then again his IshiMaa had spoken to him over the phone assuring him that she was safe. He still wanted to come back to her but she had just given him her kasam and he with a heavy heart stayed back.

A day ago, from his dadi he came to know that his IshiMaa would be discharged the day he was returning home from his tournament.

Now that he was returning from his tournament he could not wait to be back home in the arms of his IshiMaa.

---------

He impatiently rang the door bell again and again as he was not able to contain his excitement.

"Adi Baba" Neelu said opening the door for him.

"Hello Neelu Didi" he greeted her politely before he rushed into the house.

Finding the house unusually calm and finding no trace of people around, he turned to Neelu and asked "Ghar pe koi nahi hai kya?"

"Sab log hospital gaye hain" Neelu said.

"Oh Great! Aap mere liye chocolate milkshake bana do. Mai jaldi se fresh hoke aata hoon" he said walking to his room as he assumed that everyone was at the hospital to bring his IshiMaa back home.
The poor soul had no clue what had transpired behind his back and how things had changed upside down in the Bhalla house in just 2 days.

He quickly freshened up and walked back to the living room. He picked up the glass of milkshake from the kitchen counter and sat on the couch that faced the wall in the living room.

He talked to himself as he sipped the milk
'IshiMaa kitni khush hongi jab unhe pata chalega ke mujhe Man of the Match mila hai. I am sure woh ek badi si party throw karengi is achievement ko celebrate karne keliye. Aur woh tab tab proud feel karengi, jab jab woh meri trophy ko is wall pe laga hua dekhengi'
he pointed towards the wall in the process and that's when his IshiMaa's picture hanging on the wall caught his attention.

What disturbed him was the garland that was hanging around the picture. For a moment he was taken aback and then he remembered that the garland had been put around the picture when his family came to know that she was pushed off the cliff by her father.

He assumed that they had forgotten to take off the garland amidst all the chaos and he not for another moment wanted to see that garland there.

He placed his glass on the centre table and marched towards the picture. He tried reaching the garland that was way above his height and after going on his toes and raising his hand to the maximum he could, he finally managed to get hold of an edge of it.

"Adi Baba. Ye aap kya kar rahe ho?" Neelu screamed.

"Ye haar utaar raha hoon. Ab iska koi kaam nahi hai yahan" he said still on his toes and trying to take that dreaded garland off.

"Adi Baba ruk jaiyye" Neelu held his hand trying to stop him.

"Neelu didi chodiye mera hath. IshiMaa zinda hain toh unke tasveer pe ye haar nahi hona chahye" He told her.

"Meri baat toh suniye" Neelu tried to tell him but he was so engrossed in the job at his hand that he completely ignored her.

In the little tug of war that they were having, the garland got pulled with a lot of force pulling the picture frame along with it and sending it crashing onto the ground.

"Oh shit" Adi said looking at the shreds of glass and his IshiMaa's pic fallen on the floor.

Neelu clamped her mouth in shock while Adi knelt down to pick the smiling picture of his IshiMaa.

Kaanch ka tootna apshagun hota hai
he had heard his Dadi say a lot. His mind began imagining the worst scenarios and the consequences of the broken picture frame.

'Nahi...nahi...Ye mai kya soch raha hoon? IshiMaa ko kuch nahi hoga. Kaanch ke tootne se zindagi ka koi lena dena nahi hai. Tu bhi na Adi'
he chided himself for believing in the superstitious beliefs his grandmom harboured.

More than that he chided himself for thinking that something would happen to his IshiMaa. He couldn't even imagine how it would be to lose her yet again.

"Adi Baba aap chodiye. Mai saaf kar deti hoon" Neelu said recovering from the shock.

"Ok" Adi said still holding the picture in his hand.

He smiled back at her smiling picture and said "Kahan ho aap IshiMaa? I miss you so much. Jaldi aajao na"

The door bell rang and he turned towards it having the same excited he had come home with "IshiMaa" he chirpily ran to the door.

He was in for a surprise as he saw his father holding a little baby in his arms.

He was overjoyed and wanted to hold his baby sister but was too afraid that he would hurt her.

He was so busy in drooling at her that he failed to notice the expressionless faces of his family.

He stepped aside making way for them to enter inside.

Everyone stepped inside without a word which looked strange to him. He even wondered why his baby sister was not receiving the grand welcome every new born Bhalla would get.

He then realised that his IshiMaa was not there yet. He peeped out in the corridor to see if she was being accompanied by the hospital staff on a wheelchair or something as she had gone through a surgery.

"IshiMaa kahan hai?" He asked turning to his family.

They all seemed to have frozen with the mention of her name.

"IshiMaa discharge nahi hui? Woh ghar kab aayengi?" He asked again on not getting a reply to his previous question.

"Ab teri IshiMaa kabhi nahi aayegi puttar" said Toshi and began to sob loudly.

"Sambhalo apne aap ko Mumma" said Simmi holding her mother.

"Aap kya bol rahe ho? Mujhe kuch samajh nahi araha" said a shocked Adi not wanting to believe what he had inferred from his grandmother's words.

All he got in response was more tears from his grandmom and sympathising looks from his aunt.

His father stood emotionless with a sleeping baby in his arms.

Adi did not want to believe what this all meant. He was hoping against hope that what he was assuming is not true.

He shook his father asking him and blabbering "Papa boliye na IshiMaa kahan hai? Unhone mujhse waada kiya tha ke woh mujhe chod kar kahin nahi jaayengi. IshiMaa apna waada nahi todti. IshiMaa nahi jaa sakti mujhe chodke. IshiMaa..."

"Bas karo Adi" his father yelled at him making him step back in reflex

"IshiMaa IshiMaa IshiMaa. Bas karo. Aaj ke baad is ghar me koi uska naam nahi lega" Raman passed on his verdict in a fit of raging pain in his heart.

"Bhai ye aap kya bol rahe ho?" Simmi questioned.

"Maine keh diya na, bas keh diya. Jis ko jaana tha woh humein chodkar chale gaye. Jisne ye tak nahi socha ke uske jaane se hamara kya hoga uske liye hum jeena kyun chod dein. Ab yahi mera faisla hai. Aaj ke baad is ghar me koi uska naam nahi lega" saying so with final authority he walked to his room without waiting for anyone to respond.

"Hey bhagawan..Ye kya kiya tune mere sath. Is ghar ki dono raunakon ko tune mujhse cheen liya. Meri Ruhi aur meri Ishita" Toshiji lost her balance as she cried loudly.

"Mumma" shrieked Simmi holding her mother and then took her to her room.

Adi was left alone to deal with the heartbreaking news that had turned his world upside down. His little sister Ruhi and his IshiMaa were no more.

Hid knees did not support him anymore and he fell on the floor. His heart broke into million pieces like the glass frame had shred while ago.

His vision got blurry due to the tears but still his IshiMaa's smiling image remained crystal clear in his mind's eye.

"Ish..." he began to say and then remrmbered his father's verdict.

"Maaa" came out a heart wrenching cry from his mouth as he cried bitterly on his loss.

Maa..O..Maa

Adi was 15 year old now. A little moustache and stubble had began to appear on his face.

It was the annual function of their school and he was not liking this stubbly look he had.

He stood in front of his mirror in the bathroom and began shaving off the hair on his face. As he was just a beginner, he was not very skillful with using the sharp razor and he accidentally cut his finger while he was cleaning it "IshiMaa" came out a cry unplanned.

He froze completely on hearing the name the mention of which was a taboo in his house now. Although his heart called out to his IshiMaa every now and then, he had never dared to utter the name aloud.

It was not because he was scared of his Dad's verdict but because he could not bear to the see hatred attached to her name. His IshiMaa was an epitome of love and he wanted that to remain the same.

He wondered at this moment what made him utter his name aloud. That's when he remembered what his IshiMaa had said once.

Flashback

On seeing his IshiMaa coming towards his room with his science books, he hid himself behind the curtains just to have some fun.

She looked for him everywhere calling out his name but he stood soundlessly behind the curtains.

She came near the window to peep through it and check if he had gone downstairs to play with his friends.

"Bhooo" he screamed suddenly scaring her.

"Ammaaa" she shrieked in fear and Adi began to laugh holding his stomach "Yayyy...IshiMaa dar gayi" he rejoiced.

"Shaitaan! Jaan le li thi meri" she chided him holding her chest and started to laugh at herself.

When their laughter came under control, Adi asked "Ek baat batao IshiMaa, aap jab bhi dar jaati ho toh Paati ko hi kyun bulati ho? Thatha ya Papa ko kyun nahi?"

"Very intelligent question...Ummm I think ke jab nuseebat aati hai ya hum takleef me hote hain hum unhi ka naam lete hain jisse hum sabse zyada pyaar karte hain. Woh shayad isliye ke humein unke naam se himmat milti hai ke koi hai jo chahe kuch bhi ho jaaye hamara sath nahi chodega" she had reasoned.

End of flashback

Back then he had not understood her theory but today in this moment he felt she was so right but wrong at the same time.

She was right because she was the one whom he loved the most and that's why he had taken her name in pain.

But she was wrong because she was not with him today.

He remembered how she used to panic when he would get a small cut or injure himself accidentally. Her eyes would fill up when she applied the antiseptic on the wound and he would flinch in pain.

Jab Chot Kabhi
Mere Lag Jaati Thi

To Aankh Teri Bhi
To Bhar Aati Thi

Meanwhile he kept his bleeding finger below the running water and as soon as the water hit with full force on the injured skin a jolt of pain went through his veins. Immediately he pulled his finger back and began to blow on it to soothe the pain.

It did nothing to calm the burning sensation in his finger and it made him wonder that how when his IshiMaa blew over his wound after applying the antiseptic, the pain would just begin to disappear.

Ek Chhoti Si
Phoonk Se Teri

Sabhi Dard Mere
Hote The Ghum

"Kahan ho aap IshiMaa? Jab bhi mujhe chot lagti thi toh mai aapke paas doudke aa jaata tha. Aaj bhi dard ho raha hai. Aur aapki baahut yaad arahi hai" he said looking at his wound.

Aaj Bhi Koi
Chot Lage To
Yaad Aati Ho
Yaad Aati Ho Tum

Tears started flowing rapidly on his cheeks. The tears were due to pain. But the pain in his finger had subsided in front of the pain that he carried in his heart. He missed her so much and what pained more was that he would never be able to have her back in his life again.

Aaj Bhi Meri
Aankh Bhare To
Yaad Aati Ho
Yaad Aati Ho Tum

He looked into his reflection in the mirror and for strange reasons he felt he was looking at his IshiMaa, for unknown to him he was growing to become like her, a reflection of his IshiMaa.

Maa..Meri Maa..Meri Maa...
O Maa..Meri Maa..Meri Maa...Maa...

"Adi beta? Kitni der se kitabon me aur laptop me ghuse hue ho? Kya baat hai?" Shagun asked.

"Kal business studies ka assignment submit karna hai. Samajh me hi nahi araha ke kaise karoon. Aap help kar dogi please?" Adi sought her help after looking for ideas on the internet for hours.

"Mai aur business? You should be joking Adi. Mujhe in sab cheezon ke bare me zero knowledge hai. Tum Papa se help kyun nahi lete?" She suggested.

"Papa? Woh office me busy honge. Mai unhe disturb nahi karna chahta" said Adi cleverly trying to escape the situation.

First person that had come to Adi's mind when he started working on the assignment was his father but then he very well knew that his father would be the last person he would go to.

No he did not hate his father but he was aware how his father tried to maintain a distance from him. The same father who was earlier bound by the law to keep a distance from him but did everything in his capacity to erase that distance between them, was now trying everything in his capacity to create a distance between them.

"Arey nahi. Raman to aaj jaldi hi agaye the office se. Apni room me hain, tum wahin chale jaao" she said.

"Ermm...ok" he agreed hesitantly.

He gathered his books and laptop walking to his father's room.

He knocked at the door and waited for Raman's permission to enter.

On hearing no response, Adi decided to go back. He was already skeptical about going to him and now he had a reason to back off.

As he turned towards the stairs that led him back to his room, a sound from Raman's room gained his attention.

He turned back to Raman's room and called out "Papa" but there was no response yet he pushed the door ajar entering into his father's room after ages.

His father was on the couch completely drunk and unconscious. A wine bottle was rolling on the floor which made him realise that the sound was of the bottle slipping from his father's hand.

He put his stuff away and strode towards his father. It made his heart cry to see Raman in this condition.

He did not know what he should do in this situation. He could call out his grandmom or his mom for help but he did not want them to see him in this condition. Everyone in the Bhalla household was worried for Raman already and seeing him in this condition would just increase their worries.

He wished his IshiMaa was here to help him find a solution.

Teri Baaton Mein
Apni Har Ik Main
Uljhan Ka Hal
Paa Leta Tha

He reminisced seeing his IshiMaa carry his father to bed whenever he came back home drunk and not in his senses. He followed what he had seen her do and took his father to bed, removed his jacket and shoes, made him lie down on the bed comfortably and pulled the duvet over him.

"Don't do this to yourself Papa" he whispered to his father's sleeping/unconscious figure.

He gently stroked the back of Raman's palm and caressed his forehead just like his IshiMaa used to do. He felt Raman relax under the gentle touch.

"I love you Papa and I love IshiMaa equally" he confessed unafraid and he hoped his father could listen to his confession.

He picked the wine bottle from the floor and cleared the mess that his father had created in the drunken stupor.

This room now had not a thing that would remind of Ishita yet strangely everything reminded of Ishita. The paint, the furniture, the pictures every single thing had been replaced but replacing things could not help replace Ishita in their lives.

Adi came back home after a tiring day at the college. He just wanted to sprawl on the bed and get some sleep.

To his dismay, when he reached the door he saw that it was locked. He did not have the key either and his phone had run out of charge. It was just a bad day for him.

Tired and frustrated and irritated and annoyed he slumped on the couch in the corridor. He held his head and closed his eyes to calm himself.

"Adi" he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Paati" he said looking at her.

"Kya hua Kanna? Sab theek hai?" She asked worried.

"Aa...woh actually ghar pe koi nahi hai aur mere paas chabi nahi hai ghar ki" he narrated.

"Oh. Toh tum hamare ghar aa jaao. Ye ghar bhi toh tumhara hi hai na. Mai tumhare liye ek achha sa filter coffee bana deti hoon aur usse tumhari saari thakaan door hojayegi" she happily planned.

"Nahi paati. It's ok" Adi denied alrhough he wanted to accept her offer, for he knew that if anybody in Bhalla house, especiallyhis grandmom, came to know that he had gone to the Iyers that would create an unnecessary drama.

"Paati bulate ho aur mujhe itna bhi haq nahi dete ke mai apne nawase keliye kuch karoon?" She spoke emotionally.

He did not have the heart to upset her and he agreed to go with her.

"Ye dekho Kanna maine tumhare liye kya banaya hai" Mrs. Iyer happily invited him to the table as he stepped out of the washroom after cleaning up.

"Dosa tumhara favourite hai na?" She said.

Dosa...one of his favourite dishes that he had not tasted for years now, as not only the mention of Ishita's name but also her habits and choices were prohibited in his house.

He had been starving when he came home but when he saw those crisp and steaming hot dosas his hunger completely died.

On his Paati's insistence he tried to stuff the dosa into his mouth but it refused to go below his throat, as he was reminded of how his IshiMaa used to feed him with her own hands. He missed that pampering, that shower of love, which would make him eat even if he was not feeling hungry at all. Today he was hungry but he could not swallow a single morsel.

Tere Hathon Ki
Roti Aksar Hi
Bhookh Se Zyaada
Khaa Leta Tha

"Paati mujhe koi kaam yaad agaya. Mai phir kabhi aata hoon" he said hurrying out of the place.

The university was honouring the accolades that day and Adi was one of them.

The school auditorium was filled with proud parents who had come to watch their kids getting rewarded.

As he stepped on the stage and recieved his award, he remembered that moment when he had recieved the first award of his life for a project that his IshiMaa had made.

That was the first time he had begun to see Ishita in a new light

That was the first time he had begun to see Ishita in a new light. Until then he had only harboured hatred and resentment for her.

Probably the moment when he had gradually begun to accept Ishita Bhalla as his IshiMaa, was when after stepping down from the stage she had got a call from her clinic asking her to attend a patient and she had clearly declined saying "Aaj mere Adi aur Ruhi ko award mila hai. Aur mai aaj poora din unke sath celebrate karna chahti hoon. Please aaj mere liye koi appointment mat lena"

Mera Adi she had said. That had created a sense of belongingness in him and the attention he got from her made him feel happy.

Tera Hissa Main

She had then went on calling Raman, Mihika, Vandita, Simmi, Mihir and everybody on her contact list sharing the news as if he had won the Bharat Ratna Award.

Tera Kissa Main
Jo Sabko Sunaati Ho Tum

"Congratulations" the chief guest shook his hand bringing him out of the memory lane.

"Thank you sir" he humbly accepted the reward.

"He is the brightest student of our university and also the captain of the football team" his principal informed the chief guest about the achievements of Adi with pride.

'Mai chahti hoon ke poori duniya mere Adi ke baare me naaz se baat kare'

It felt his IshiMaa's dream had come true.

Aaj Bhi Meri
Baat Chale To
Yaad Aati Ho
Yaad Aati Ho Tum

'Maine aapki wish poori kardi IshiMaa' he mentally conveyed to her as his eyes filled up.

Aaj Bhi Meri
Aankh Bhare To..
Yaad Aati Ho

There are two categories of people in the world with regard to birthdays. Some, who look forward to their birthdays with full of enthusiasm and others who do not even consider it worth a celebration.

Shagun definitely fell in the first category but over the years she had come to fall into the second category, unwillingly though.

For the last 5 years her birthdays had come and gone without being noticed and celebrated by the people around her. Now gradually she had begun to accept that this day is not worth a celebration, so much that she even forgot that it was her birthday today.

For a school assignment, Pihu had to mention the birthdays of her family members, through which she got to know that Shagun's birthday was soon approaching. On top of that the daily soaps freak Pihu had seen the kids planning a surprise for their mom in her favourite show and since then she had started planning a surprise for Shagun.

Although she had great ideas on her mind she was too young to execute it all on her own. So she had sought her partner-in-crime, Adi bhaiyya's help in setting it up.

Adi was amazed that little Pihu was doing something to make his mother happy which he as an elder son had never done for her. He felt guilty for not even remembering her birthday.

It was quite strange that he shared a bond with Ishita greater than that he shared with his own biological mom and on the other hand Pihu shared a bond with Shagun greater than that she shared with her own biological mother.

Although Pihu and Adi's situation appeared similar there was a huge difference between the two.

Pihu had never known that Ishita was her biological mother nor had she ever seen her. But as far as Adi is concerned, he lived under the shade of his mother for 12 years and hardly for 2 years he lived with Ishita. Yet those 2 years of growing up with Ishita had such a great impact on him that even after 5 years of Ishita's departure and inspite of living with Shagun again, he considered Ishita his mother, his IshiMaa.

Sharp at 12 am, Pihu and Adi sneaked into Shagun's room and wished her happy birthday completely surprising her.

"OMG! This is such a pleasant surprise. Thank you so much bachhon" she said overwhelmed.

"Don't thank me. The entire credit goes to our little crime master Pihu" said Adi.

Pihu raised her imaginary collar. Shagun took her in a tight hug and Adi captured the moment.

Adi placed in front of her a cake he had ordered in advance as he did not know how to bake one. On top of the cake was written 'Happy Birthday Shagun Mumma'.

"Come on cut the cake Mumma" said Pihu.

"Haan ye lijiye. Par usse pehle you will have to ask for a wish from God, Shagun Mumma" said Adi handing her the knife.

"Kya ye wish mai God se nahi, apne bete se maang sakti hoon?" She asked surprising Adi.

He was confused what she meant yet he gave an approving nod.

"Kya tum mujhe sirf Mumma bulaoge?" She asked expectantly.

Adi did not know why she asked for this wish. He stared blankly at her.

Seeing his reaction, Shagun explained the reason "Jab bhi tum Shagun Mumma kehte ho toh lagta hai ke tumne mujhe paraya kar diya hai. Tum mere bete ho Adi, maine tumhe janam diya hai. Maine apni zindagi me chahe kitni hi galtiyaan ki ho, mujhe itna toh haq hai hi ke mera beta mujhe Mumma bulaye."

Adi froze completely. He had never realised in these 5 years that when and why he had begun to call his own mother as Shagun Mumma. It never appeared to him that it was due to the distance that had been created between them during her absence in his life.

He had loved Shagun more than his dear life. So blindly that everything she spoke was a truth for him and everything she decided was the final law.

He had even distanced himself from his own father believing all the cooked up stories by Shagun.

And when it came to Ishita, he hated her with all his might and had wanted to make her life a living hell.

The fire incident, followed by the earthquake, had changed his equations with these 3 important figures in his life completely.

He had started to hate the same Shagun whom he had loved more than his own self.

He had begun to come closer to his father whom he had been pushing away so far.

And now he loved Ishita so much that he could give his life for her.

It was overwhelming to see himself with so much love for a woman whose existence he once denied.

[Words in italics copied from Florine's comment on Wattpad. Thank you florine]

"Shayad tum mujhe aaj tak maaf nahi kar paaye ho" Shagun said on seeing him deep in thoughts.

"Nahi aisi baat nahi hai...Mumma" he addressed her as Mumma only, after about 7 years.

Shagun smiled with happy tears pouring from her eyes and hugged him "Thank you Adi. This is my best birthday ever"

Adi hugged her back and thought if he had been wronging his mother by giving Ishita the place above her in his life.

It was not that he did not love Shagun, nor did he doubt his love for her.

May be she loved him as much as Ishita loved him or may be more.

But if he thinks deeply Shagun had a reason to love him. She loved him because she had given birth to him and as she claimed as a mother it was her duty to love him.

And Ishita had no reason to love him, they were not bonded by birth nor by blood. Yet she loved him like it was her duty.

That's what made the difference.

Shagun was a woman who brought him into this world and gave him a family which for namesake was his.

Ishita was a woman who taught him to love and gifted him a family which he could call as his.

[Once again thanks to Florine for this beautiful line]

From the day he had realised this difference between the two women in his life, his biological mother had become Shagun Mumma for him and his step mother had become IshiMaa.

'Saare step moms evil hote hain. Woh kabhi real mom ki tarah nahi ho sakte' he had told her once.

'Right! Step mom kabhi real mom ki tarah nahi ho sakti. Kyunki meri step mom meri real mom se bhi badhkar hai. Meri Maa, IshiMaa' he thought.

Adi was right when he called Ishita his step mom.
Why? Because he was reborn with every STEP that she took FOR him, TOWARDS him...Infact he was stepping up on that very steps that she built for him to close the distance between them...

Adi had been working really hard to get through the campus interviews.

Next day the selections would be made and he was hell nervous about it.

Before going to bed he made sure that he had done all the preparations, had the clothes set asids for it and all required documents were properly arranged.

"Perfect" he said after checking on all the requirements.

He then decided to go to bed early and catch some good sleep so that he could appear fresh and lively during his interview.

Unfortunately when he hit the bed sleep completely evaded him. He tried hard to get some sleep, tried all the possible measures that would push him to sleep but sadly none worked as his nervousness and fear overpowered him.

In that moment he missed his IshiMaa so much. Whenever he was worried or not able to sleep, she would make him lie on her lap and stroke his hairs so lovingly that all his worries would disappear in thin air and sleep would come embrace him happily.

Kone Ko Thaame
Tere Aanchal Ke
Be-Fikra Main
So Jaata Tha

"Kaash aap aaj yahan hoti IshiMaa. I miss you so much" he wished.

"Jiyonda reh puttar" Mr.Bhalla blessed Adi when he came back with the results of his final semester.

"Haaye mera Adi university topper hai. Good good" Mrs.Bhalla celebrated as she hugged Adi tightly.

"Congrats Beta. Mumma is very proud of you" Shagun kissed his forehead.

"Neelu mithayi le aa. Sabka moo meetha kardoon. Mera puttar inni changi khabar laaya hai" said Mrs.Bhalla.

She fed him sweets and he fed her back. She was distributing sweets to everyone present in the Bhalla house when Raman walked into the living room.

"Raman tu bhi moo meetha karle. Tere bete ne university top kiya hai" Mrs.Bhalla extended a peda towards his mouth to feed him. He held her hand midway and took it in his hands.

Adi came forward to take his father's blessings.

"It's ok" Raman said stopping him in between.

His heart swelled with pride for his son's achievement but in all these years he had forgotten to express his emotions. The only emotion he ever showed was anger.

"Congrats" he said emotionlessly.

Adi felt bad that his father showed no excitement on his achievement but he had learnt to live with it. He gave his father a weak smile in response.

"Kal se office join karlena" Raman began to walk away passing his verdict.

Adi was heartbroken that his father had decided for his career even without consulting him. He had obeyed every command of his father without any argument and may be that was the reason his father thought he could impose all his decisions over him.

So this time Adi decided to speak for himself.

"Papa mai aapka office nahi join kar sakta" he said building in some courage.

"Kya matlab hai tumhara?" Raman turned back to him.

"Kyun beta? Koi problem hai?" Shagun intervened.

"Kyunki meri job ek event managment firm me final hogayi hai" he said boldly.

"Job final hogayi hai matlab? Tum ab business chodke job karoge?" Raman glared.

"Haan mai filhaal sirf job karna chahta hoon. When I am confident me mai business sambhal paaoonga tab mai aapko join karunga" he explained.

"Wow! What an explanation! Log hasenge ye sunke ke Business Tycoon Raman Bhalla ka beta apni khud ki company chodke kisi aire gaire firm me job kar raha hai" Raman mocked.

"Woh company meri nahi aapki hai Papa" Adi stated.

"Oh! Toh theek hai. Agar job karni hi hai toh mujhe bata deta. Mai tujhe Tata Birla jaisi badi badi companies me job dila deta. Sirf Raman Bhalla ka naam sunkar hi tujhe log job de dete" Raman said.

"Yahi toh mai nahi chahta ke mujhe apke naam ki wajah se ya aapki sifarish ki wajah se koi job de. Mujhe meri kabiliyat sabith jarni hai aur mai apni khud ki ek pehchan banana chahta hoon" Adi countered.

"Khud ki pehchan bullshit. Tum sirf itna jatana chahte ho ke tum ab itne bade hogaye ho ke apne hi baap ke faislon ke khilaf jaane ki himmat kar sakte ho. Tum bas mujhe neecha dikhana chahte ho aur kuch nahi" Raman accused him.

Adi was devastated. He never had any intentions to hurt his father or demean him. All he wanted was to have an individual identity. He did not want to be recognised as the son of Raman Bhalla, he wanted to be identified as Aditya Bhalla. He had assumed his father would be proud to know that his son was following his footsteps and building a name on his own. Sadly his father thought the opposite.

"Papa mera aisa koi irada nahi tha. Mujhe nahi pata ke mai apne man ki baat apko kaise samjhaoon. Kaash IshiMaa yahan hoti toh woh samjhaa pati ke mai kya chahta hoon" he blurted in a flow.

Mere Dil Mein Kya
Hai Tere Bina Maa
Koi Samjhaa Hi
Naa Pata Tha

"Adi! Tumhari himmat kaise hui us aurat ka naam lene ki" Raman roared at him.

"Yahi toh problem hai na Papa. Aaj aapki wajah se mujhe apni hi Maa ka naam lene keliye himmat ki zarurat hai. Apko toh ye bhi nahi dikhta ke mai kitna akela pad gaya hoon IshiMaa ke jaane ke baad. IshiMaa ne itna oyar kiya mujhse ke aaj aap sabka pyar bhi unke pyar ke saamne kam pad raha hai. Aur mai itna bebas hoon ke chahte hue bhi unka naam apne zabaan pe nahi laa sakta" Adi lost control on his tongue deeply pained by his father's words.

Jo Ho Sang Tu Na
Lage Jag Suna
Pyar Itna Jatati Ho Tum

"Adi tumhe samajh me nahi araha ke mai us aurat ka naam nahi sunna chahta? Aur ye mera akhri faisla hai ke tum kal se meri office join karoge" Raman gritted his teeth angrily.

"Akhri faisla! Huhhh...sirf faisla hi toh lena aata hai apko, chahe woh galat hi kyon na ho. Aap bas faisla sunake chal dete ho. Aapko toh is baat ka bhi andaza nahi ke aapke faislon ne hum sabko ek uljhan me baandh rakha hai" Adi confronted.

"Bahut zuban chalne lagi hai teri. Bahut bada hogaya hai na. Ab tu mujhe sikhayega ke kya galat hai aur kya sahi? Maine baandha hua hai na sabko? Toh theek hai, mai tujhe azaad chodta hoon. Jahan jaana hai jaa, jahan job karna hai kar. Mera naam nahi chahye, meri business nahi chahye toh mere business se kamayi hui koi cheez bhi tujhe nahi milegi. Ab karke dikha jo tu karna chahta hai" Raman scoffed in a fit of rage and walked away.

"Adi! Aise baat karta hai kya koi apne baap se. Jaao aur abhi ke abhi mafi maango papa se" Shagun chided him.

"Mumma aap ko bhi lagta hai ke mai galat hoon? Mujhe laga tha kam se kam aap toh mera saath dogi" he said.

"Adi mai ye nahi keh rahi hoon ke tum galat ho. Par Raman bhi toh galat nahi hai. Agar woh ye chahte hain me tum unka business join karo toh isme kya burayi hai?" Shagun said softening a bit.

"Haan puttar. Ye sara kuch tera hi toh hai. Raman ne akhir kiske liye khada kiya hai itna bada business? Tujhe hi toh sambhalna hai ye sab. Tu thande dimag se soch aur Raman ko samajhne ki koshish kar" Mrs.Bhalla explained.

Adi could clearly see that none in the house was willing to go against Raman which meant he was all alone in this battle for his identity. He did not want to stand amidst the people and try explaining them when he very well knew that it was not going to have any effect on them.

He did not speak a word and left the house. He went to the bench where he and his IshiMaa would spend hours discussing his problems and finding solutions to it.

Only if she was here to support him in this huge decision he had taken.

Aaj Bhi Koi
Saath Na De To
Yaad Aati Ho
Yaad Aati Ho Tum

He shed tears silently over the years missing her concern, her advices, her pampering, her motivating words, her gentle caresses, her understanding, her support. He missed her in every walk of his life.

Aaj Bhi Meri
Aankh Bhare To..
Yaad Aati Ho
Yaad Aati Ho Tum..

"IshiMaa...Wapas aa jaao please" he cried.

Maa..O Meri Maa..Meri Maa...
Meri Maa..Meri Maa..Meri Maa

Unknown to him the God above had decided to grant him his wish. He was not aware that the very path he had chosen for his life would lead him towards the woman who had taught him to live.

Can't believe it has already been 11 years!! YHM will always remain special to me..The initial 300 episodes are sheer perfection and no ITV show...
