Chapter-31

GIVE IT A GO


"Yeh Dr Subramaniam agar chahta kya hai?"

(what do this Subbu want?)


Ashok was in deep thought. Going office was not a concern now. He crisscrossed the possibilities of Subbu's interference in Raman's life. He was right, it is a great benifit for him. But this was not what he wants. He wants something else. Something more precious. He after thinking for the millionth time dialled him.

"Hello...I need to meet you."


AT THE COFFEESHOP


Ashok turned back to see Raman glaring at him asking what the hell is cooking in his mind now. He forwarded his hand for a handshake which Raman accepted smiling fakily. Both of them stared each other to adapt to their presence. Precisely, Ashok gave Raman the much needed space to accommodate him.


"Subbu came home this morning"


He explained him the happenings in one go. His face showed utter shock and genuine worries. Raman was looking at him blankly. He couldn't open his mouth. Ashok tried to console and support him by his words. But he was nowhere listening. The fragmented man is all shattered into tiny pieces now. Ashok could see his worries.


"I never wanted this Raman. I don't care about you or Ishita. I just don't care. But Samanta...voh is baat ko jaankar tuth jayegi."

(Samanta will be broken knowing it)


Raman fisted his hands saying, "It is Ruhi...! Ruhi Bhalla."


"Tum meri beti ki naam change kar sakta hai Raman. But she will remain mine...and mine only." Ashok lashed out.

(You'll be able to change my daughter's name)


Raman gritted back in a dangerous tone, "She is always a Bhalla. My legally adopted daughter. I hate her to be known as a Bloody Khanna."


Ashok stared at him some time and heaved a sigh, "Hm...But she is and so is her mom. You cannot change it. EVER"


"Meri behan ko tujhse shaadi karvakar main ne bahut badi galti kiya. Ruhi ko tujhe dekar ek aur galti nahin kar sakta mein." Raman said on top of his voice forgetting that it is a public place.

(I made a mistake by getting my sister married to you. I can't repeat it by giving Ruhi to you)


Ashok looked around embarrassed and asked Raman to cool down.


"Mujhe zyada kuch nahin kehna...Bas yeh Subbu ko kya karna hai yeh bolo. I can't let someone play with my daughter's feelings.And he is a creep. He may become dangerous if he comes to know that she is my daughter. It'll become a problem for both of us" Ashok asked Raman helplessly.

(I don't want to say more. Just tell me what should I do to this Subbu)


Raman calmed down hearing the mention of Ruhi. "Kuch pata nahin. And I'm sure it is a great chance for you to claim her" He pointed sarcastically.

(I don't know)


Ashok hissed in frustration, "You exactly know what I want Raman."


Raman bite back saying, "You will never get it."


"I will wait till my last breath for it. For you to accept me as your friend and the day when you yourself tell Ruhi that I'm her biological father. I don't want anything else." Ashok said expectantly.


A lone tear escaped Raman's eye which wasn't unnoticed by Ashok. Raman was in dilemma. He couldn't understand whether Ashok is good or bad. He never listened to his words. He doesn't know his part of the story.


He could feel how sincrely worried is Ashok. He cannot always show blind eye to him. Today, he want to listen to him. He could feel the pain of a father. He could see how defeated is he because he couldn't make his daughter stay close to him.


For the first time after six years he regretted to separate Ruhi from Ashok. He felt guilty watching him caring for everyone like before without expecting anything. Memories of the good old days flashed before him making his vision blurry.


Raman voiced in a low tone, "Still...I can never tell her that. You know...she will be shattered." (Making a straight face to hide his soft corner) "And that doesn't mean that I'm forgiving you for whatever you've done. You cheated my sister."


Ashok screamed losing his temper, "I never. I never did. I always loved her and still do. It was my parents who manipulated you and your family about me because they didn't want me to be in a nuptial relationship with a mentally imbalanced girl. But I always love my Shagun..."


Raman looked on without blinking an eye. He asked him as if in a trance, "Matlab...tum...sach...?"

(Means...you...true?)


Ashok held Raman's hands and said teary eyed, "Believe me Raman. Mujhe kuch bhi nahin pata dha. Mummiji papaji joh bhi kiya usme mera koyi galti nahin hai. Agar tum ek baar mujhse ghulke baat ki toh...shayad...aise kuch nahin hota."

(I didn't know anything. Whatever mummiji and papaji did, there is no my fault. If you would had talked me once, maybe all these wouldn't have happened)


Raman stood up from the seat and hugged him tight. After six years he cried for the death of his sister, Shagun. He never did cry for it. But today in the arms of his best friend he felt it is the best moment to do it. In the arms of the one who shares the same pain. They shared their pain and happiness of the past six years while drinking a coffee of friendship.


"Toh voh...uska naya boyfriend tumho..." Raman laughed at Ashok clutching his stomach.

(So you're her new boyfriend)


"What so funny yaar?" Ashok asked making a face.


"Agar kuch der pehale pata hota toh main tera band baja deta yaar..." He started his next round of laughter at the cost of Ashok while he enjoyed the genuine brightness ofhis friend's face.

(If I got to know before sometimes I would have killed you)


But the smile didn't last so long. It was Mihika's call which made him panic. Ashok was no better. Raman disconnected the call and bid goodbye to Ashok after telling him that he will catch him later. Ashok was also worried for Ishita while Raman madly drove the car home.


RAMAN'S HOME


Ishita was laying in the bed while Mihika sat beside her reading a magazine. Raman peeped at her and found her in deep slumber. He inquired Mihika about the matter.


"Akka stair se gir gaya...acha hua main agayi...varna pata nahin kya ho jatha...!" Mihika exclaimed worriedly.

(She fell down from the stair. It was good that I came. Else don't know what would have happened)


Raman sat near Ishita and caressed her forehead. He checked her hands and looked at Mhika quizzically as if asking if there is any problem. Mihika shook her head in negative and left the room after saying that her akka is perfectly alright.


He softly trailed a kiss on her forehead and mumbled an I Love You to her. She replied a MORE in a mere murmur and slipped back to sleep. After letting Ashok know that she is fine he walked to Mihika.


She was nervously sitting there which alarmed him. He knows the results of her nervousness very well. But this time, he got a grip. A kind of confidance to face anythig. Maybe because his confidant is back; Ashok.


"Bolo Mihika ab kya hua?" He asked her while sitting opposite to her.

(Say what happened now?)


"Maine kal apke ghar gaye dhe" She said blankly.

(I've gone your home yesterday)


"Toh kya? Any problem there?" He questioned tensely.

(So what?)


"No...but I've seen a photo of Mihir and Shagun in Mihir's bedroom...the same one like yours and hers...Aur...Romi also keeps one" She stated furrowing her eyebrows.


"Toh kya...matlab...tum...tum kehna kya chahte ho?" He asked stammering everywhere.

(So what. I mean what you want to say?)


"Agar main ap logon ke bare mein bina kuch jane apke ghar jaakar voh photo dekhliya dha toh...main yeh samajhkar baithi hongi ki Shagun Mihir ki biwi hai. Matlab tum teenon same model ki sharvani pehankar dulhan ke saath photo liya dha. It only means that you three are sharing the same relationship with her. Ek hi time par theenon ko shaadi todi kar sakte hai...toh apka"

(If I've seen that photo without knowing anything about you, I would have thought that Shagun is Mihir's wife. I mean you three have taken the photo with the bride wearing the same model sharvani. It is impossible to marry three people at a time. So your)


Mihika couldn't complete because Raman cutted her short declaring on top of his voice that Shagun is his sister and she was married to Ashok Khanna the one whom Ishita was about to marred to.


Ishita who woke up feeling Raman's presence was about to call Raman from upstairs but stopped hearing Raman's declaration. She was shocked is an understatement. She stood there like a statue sharped to hear the rest. Mihika who knew what is coming made a face for not letting her akka know anything about his past. She roared at him for hiding everything and making her akka a fool in his life.


"Aur kya kya hai jiju...? Ab Shagun apki behan ban gayi aur Ruhi apki nahin balki Ashok Khanna ki beti... Samanta Khanna! Aur kya hai ab? Yeh sab ap meri akka se kab kehne vale ho?"

(Now what jiju? Now Shagun became your sister and Ruhi is not yours but Ashok Khanna's daughter Samanta Khanna! Waht else is there? When are you going to tell all these to my akka?)


She didn't let him reply but walked away angrily. He sat there dejectedly and glanced at the direction to his bedroom while running a hand through his hair. He was dead the moment he saw Ishita standing there clutching the railing of the stair with a defeated expression.
