Nervous nervous nervous... !!!!!!! 😳

Hey guys, can't believe I'm so nervous about this😭😭😭. A minute ago I sort of chickened out and decided not to post it . But here it is anyways. It's a simple story nothing as sweet or emotional as the ones preceding it. I kind of changed the plot midway and the result came out to be half of one and half of another. So chappal, ande aur tomatos are welcome... but please throw them with love ❤️. The song is 'Phir Mohabbat' from the movie Murder 2. The youtube link to it has English subtitles, I hope that helps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThHI5COJexA

@peace: Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity...

Dil...Sambhal ja zara...!!!!

Jab jab tere paas main aaya, Ek sukoon mila

He leaned against his car, a small smile teasing the corner of his mouth as he saw the apple of his eyes jumping and dancing out of her school, engaged in an animated discussion with the woman holding her hand.

'The woman' Did he just call her that? He was sure he did, he was so afraid of even taking her name these days. That woman evoked feeling in him that he had long buried in the deepest hell of his life. He didn't like it one bit, he didn't like feeling naked in front of her, it was as if she could read him in and out. He didn't like the peace that settled into his heart whenever she was around.

Jise main tha bhoolta aaya, Wo wajood mila

Her name was Ishita... Ishita Vishwanathan Iyer. Ruhi's class teacher or as Ruhi likes to call her Ishi-maam. The last 'M' would often go silent and to his horror these days his stomach would do a strange flip flop every time Ruhi made this mistake. Had he been a teen-ager he would have called it butterfly syndrome, he thought with distaste.

He still remembered the first day she had come breezing into their life seven months ago...

It was Ruhi's first day as a first grader at AVD School. He was nervous as hell, despite his mother's constant assurance; the father in him wasn't ready to believe that all will be well. He knew how hard it was for him to deal with the complaints that came from Ruhi's kindergarten. His daughter was an introvert, and a really stubborn one at that and no one would believe if he said that he had tried everything possible in the dictionary of parenting to get her out of her shell but without success. She had no friends and she didn't make any effort to make some either. His family could die for her, but she didn't seem to care, that guilt of depriving his daughter of a mother had hence always overpowered his senses. He couldn't help but think that had she been with her mother, she would have been happier.

He had parked his car in front of her school, opened the passenger door for Ruhi and holding her tiny palm in his large ones, he had nervously entered her school compound.

He stood in the open green ground with the other parents of 1st graders who to his discomfort were all mothers. He was the only male species in the entire area, well if you would ignore the toddler boys of course. With so many people around, Ruhi had hidden herself behind him almost pulling his pant down. He sighed as he continuously tried to calm her down. Well a nervous daughter and an equally nervous father, what a combo. He wondered why the class teacher was taking so much time to make an appearance. There were two helpers and a female class teacher, he was told by the principle. He hoped the woman would be a middle-aged one with enough experience in handling children.

Just then he felt Ruhi slightly move away from him. Glancing at the direction she was eagerly glancing at, he saw her for the first time. Giggling and smiling, she was seated amidst many children. He had brushed her off as a relative of a student and turned to a parent standing next to him, he asked

"Do you have any idea when the class teacher will be arriving? I kind of have to go to my office"

The woman smiled and pointed at Ishita "There she is"

He had looked shocked at her "What? Are you sure? She doesn't look like she can handle so many children" He noticed her carefully now, she looked so fragile and soft, he wondered why the school had hired her.

The woman now smiled affectionately at him "1st time for you isn't it? Don't worry my elder son studied here last year" pointing at Ishita she said "And she is the best in the job. You can totally trust her with your life"

He had silently nodded, not convinced though.

By that time he saw all the children had entered the class-room and were properly seated; it was just Ruhi who won't budge. One of the helpers had tried to pull her resulting in Ruhi pressing herself more into Raman, tears had started making way out of her tiny eyes.

Jab aaye mausam gham ke, Tujhe yaad kiya

He had bowed down beside her, telling her that it would be all right and he would pick her up by the end of the class. That was when he noticed that Ishita had also bowed down to Ruhi's level and was softly whispering something into her ears. Ruhi had looked at her with wide eyes and Ishita had whispered some more. With Ruhi's complete attention on her, she had gestured Raman to move out smiling reassuringly at him. For the first time he felt like he could trust this stranger with his angel, he has smiled back with gratitude and moved out of there.

That was the first time she rescued him, and from that day on he had lost count of all the good things she did for him, well technically for his daughter and for that he was forever in debt to her.

Jab sehme tanhapan se, Tujhe yaad kiya...

He jerked back to reality when he saw that they reached him and were now glancing curiously at him

Ruhi shook his leg to grab his attention "Papa" he looked down at her "What are you thinking? I'm hungry lets go home"

"Oh sorry sorry" he said covering up "I was just thinking about this project..."

"Come on Mr. Bhalla" He heard Ishita's mildly amused voice "Don't lie. You were smiling and no one smiles thinking about a boring project" she said playfully

"Well for all you know, Miss. Iyer, the project could have been really interesting" he hit back.

They had developed a friendly relation over the months. And throwing mild jibes at each other had become a habit that he was trying hard to get rid of. He was finding these light conversations way too personal these days, strangely, they didn't bother him earlier.

His mouth let out an involuntary sigh as he saw her bent down and sloppily kiss Ruhi good bye "Good bye sweetheart" she whispered

"Bye Ishi-maa, see you in the evening" There goes the 'm' again, he thought, frustrated

She had then looked at him with those big brown eyes filled with mirth, as if she always found something funny about him, and said "Good bye, Mr. Bhalla".

He had nodded with a tight smile, not trusting his voice enough. She had then turned around and disappeared in the crowd, her long hair, dancing at her back as she walked away. He closed his eyes and let out a silent curse, she was doing that again, distracting him.

...dil... Sambhal ja zara
Phir mohabbat karne chala hai tu
Dil yahin ruk jaa zara
Phir mohabbat karne chala hai tu

~~~~~~~~~
Evening came for Raman with its own set of tortures. As soon as the doorbell to their mansion rang, Ruhi rushed to open it knowing very well that her favorite person stood at the other end of the door. Raman groaned and stood up too, only to turn towards the direction of his room. Shutting the door he did what he does the best these days, sulking by the window of his room.
He soon found Ruhi and Ishita making their way to the lawn, where Ishita sat with Ruhi, sometimes teaching her, sometimes playing with her, unaware of his gaze.
This was what his routine had turned into since the past month. He didn't realize when he had suddenly started getting conscious around her. He didn't know the exact date when he started noticing her so much, the way her eyes twinkled when she smiled, the way she pouted when she was angry, the way her nose scrunched when she was irritated. But every time he thought about her in the midst of an important meeting, he cursed himself to sleep. He could feel the change, not only in Ruhi but her father as well and he didn't like changes. He had learnt it the hard way that giving up to beautiful temptations was the worst idea ever.
Aisa kyun kar hua...
Janu naa...Main janu naa...
His thoughts went back to the days that followed their first meeting. For about a month after that day, he hadn't seen her. He would drop Ruhi off and then pick her up. He was happy that Ruhi now showed some signs of eagerness to go to school. All was well until that afternoon when Ruhi was accompanied by Ishita out of the school gate. Her face told him that there was trouble ahead.
"You must be Mr. Bhalla" she said as she stood near him "Ruh's father right?" she forwarded her hand with a smile.
He nodded and shook her hand, still unsure of why she was there "Hello"
She had then turned to Ruhi with that infectious smile and slowly told her "Ruh, why don't you go and bid good-bye to Shravu" she pointed at a small boy grinning at Ruhi's direction. Ruhi then reluctantly left Ishita's hand to turn and walked towards Shravu.
"You might have already guessed that I wanted to talk to you Mr Bhalla" he tore his gaze from Ruhi to look at her teacher.
"Yes" he nodded "If Ruhi is troubling..."
"No, she isn't" she cut his sentence short. He looked at her, confused; taking the clue she continued "The problem is that she doesn't trouble us at all. She is almost invisible, she doesn't talk to anyone, she doesn't like playing, she doesn't like whatever a child of her age should" she finished
He nodded in agreement "I understand" he said dejected "Look Miss..."
"Iyer" she smiled "Ishita Iyer"
"Miss Iyer, believe me as I say this, I've tried every possible way to make her behave her age. We have even sought medical help but the doctors say that she is absolutely fine. I don't know what to do anymore"
She shook her head in agreement "I totally believe in your dedication towards your daughter Mr. Bhalla but maybe it's the other family members"
"No, everyone back home adores her" he sighed "They love her"
She looked uncomfortable about something and he knew particularly what it was, he had faced this question many times in the past
"She doesn't stay with us" he said, she looked up at him with shock and a bit of embarrassment
"I'm sorry"
"Don't be" he brushed it off
"Maybe she misses her" she offered an explanation
"To miss someone you have to actually know them. Ruhi has never known her mother" He knew that she was amazed at how smoothly he was telling her about his ex-wife, without a hint of bitterness "She left when Ruhi was 6 month old, as soon as she stopped feeding off her" he looked away "And I will be ever grateful to her for that"
"Can't she like sometimes visit her?" she had asked after a pause "You know, just to maintain the balance of having both her parent"
"No, she actually is settled in the US" he said "She's a model" he looked at her "Anyways, tell me if there is any other way. I would do anything for my daughter"
She smiled "Your daughter is a lucky girl Mr. Bhalla, she has got an amazing father" she sighed "I wish I could do something to help her"
He saw Ruhi walking towards them, Ishita bent down and whispered something to Ruhi who instantly smiled and kissed Ishita's cheek. Ishita kissed her back and whispered a soft good-bye as Raman stood there, half-amused half-confused.
"What do you do to her" he asked as Ruhi sat inside the car "Black magic?"
She winked at him "You never know; good-bye Mr. Bhalla" and turned around leaving behind a shocked Raman. Did she just wink at him?
Dil sambhal ja zara
Phir mohabbat karne chala hai tu
That night he had pondered upon her effect on Ruhi and the next morning he had offered her a proposal to be a private tutor cum guide to Ruhi. She had flatly refused initially arguing that for her, all her students were equal and she couldn't pay special attention to one student.
He had then explained how Ruhi was more in need of help than other students and that he was ready to pay any amount for that. She had looked hurt for a moment after which she said that it wasn't about the money. Her entire family was doctors but she had always loved children and wanted to be a teacher, she didn't need his money. He had immediately mumbled a sorry. But to his luck, she seemed to have really liked Ruhi and hence she agreed to tutor her as long as she takes to come out of her shell.
And she kept her promise; she came every evening for the last 6 months. Played and taught Ruhi and also took special care to include him in Ruhi's life where ever possible, he too kept his evenings free and actively participated in building Ruhi up. And now, 6 months later, he could happily say that Ishita had done what no one else in the world could do, she had gifted him his lively daughter and he couldn't thank her enough for that.
A heavy knock at his door brought him out of his thoughts. He sighed and looked out of the window, night had fallen and neither Ruhi nor Ishita were anywhere in his sight.
He turned to the door and opened it. It was his mother
"Raman, drop Ishita home" his mother ordered
He mumbled a curse under his breath "I'll ask the driver..." he began, when Ishita came behind his mother
"I..." she said "well I need to talk to you Mr. Bhalla" with a small smile
Dil yahin ruk ja zara
Phir mohabbat karne chala hai tu
Not knowing what to say at her sudden request, he nodded and grabbed the key to his car "Let's go"
As they drove towards her home he felt her stare at him. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat "You want to tell me something?" he asked
""Yes actually" she said "...ummm you know Ruhi has changed a lot in the last couple of months"
He smiled, relieved, so she was going to talk about Ruhi "Yes, all thanks to you. I really am in debt..."
She cut him off "...you are embarrassing me Mr Bhalla. You know I love Ruh and will do anything for her"
He sometimes was amused at how profoundly Ishita and Ruhi proclaimed their love for each other
She continued after a while "So now that Ruhi is happy, my work is over" His breath halted "She doesn't need me anymore"
So that was what she wanted to talk to him. Shouldn't he be relieved? She was herself going away without him having to do anything. He should be happy; he needed to get away from her.
He nodded "I understand. You've done so much for us" His car came to a halt at her house "Have a good life, Miss Iyer" he said with a small courtesy smile at her.
She looked at him for a while, "Ishita" she said
"Pardon?"
"We have known each other long enough Mr. Bhalla, you can call me Ishita now"
He nodded softly "Ishita" her name came like a soft whisper as his chest felt heavy suddenly.
She quickly turned around and left. He realized that it was the first time she didn't say a good-bye. He waited till she entered her home before turning his car away.
Jis raah pe, hai ghar tera
Aksar wahan se, haan main hoon guzra
Shayad yahin dil mein raha
Tu mujh ko mil jaye, Kya pata...
~~~~~~~~~

They were at the beach that day; she was wearing a peach colour dress that complemented her skin perfectly. The afternoon sun had eased out at the horizon making way for a beautiful evening. He watched her as she played with Ruhi, jumping and splashing water at each other. Her gaze suddenly turned to him, he was caught off-guards, but she smiled back and moved her hands animatedly asking him to join them. He shook his head in negative and asked her to continue. He then saw her move towards him with a glint in her eyes, he frowned in response. His instinct told him to move away, but he sat rooted to his spot lost in her grin. Her hands that were hidden to her back suddenly emerged and before he could contemplate he was smeared in sand. Instinctively, he closed his eyes. When he opened them, he saw her running away from him, her laughter filled the air.

He got up instantly and ran behind her after he made sure that his large palms carried enough sand in them. She had run as fast as she could, but he was faster, their marathon soon carried them away from the crowd. He had caught up soon enough and had pulled her by her elbow. Unfortunately, the pull was so sudden that they both fell down with the intensity of the pull. He felt the hard sand beneath him and almost the next instant, he fell her soft body fall on top of his. His arms automatically wrapped around her form letting the sand in his hand fall all over her. He rolled over her putting her beneath him now, their breath labored, courtesy the run.

He grabbed a handful of sand in his right hand, raising himself a little above her with the help of his left elbow he then carefully guided his fisted right palm above the length of here body, letting little amount of grains fall in succession. Satisfied with his work he looked up at her face only to find her eyes closed, he could bet he heard a soft moan escape her lips. That took his gaze to her lips, he saw with astonishment how a single grain of sand glittered on her plump lips under the evening sun. His hand had involuntarily moved to remove that but he stopped midway as she opened her eyes suddenly.

"ummm... You have a grain in there" he tried to explain

She frowned and raised her hand to remove it but in the process smeared some more sand grain that had come along her hand. They both smiled at the situation, he raised his hand to show that his' were filled with sand too.

She then did something that raised fire to the pit of his stomach, she had tried to blow them off and she went on trying in vain. He wasn't in his senses anymore, he slowly moved to raise his face to her level, bending down; he put his mouth at the corner of her lips and sucked at a grain. Pulling away he spitted it off and then went on to repeat the task this time directly on the bottom lip. He saw her close her eyes once again...

He suddenly fell short of breath and jerked up to sit straight. He closed and opened his eyes several times to adjust to the darkness. He was sweating from head to toe and his breaths were rugged and heavy. He tossed off the blanket and grabbed the glass full of water kept on the bedside table and gulped it at a go.

Sitting in the middle of his bed in the midnight darkness that engulfed him, reality slowly dawned upon him as his eyes widened in horror. He ran a hand through his wet sweat filled hair, his breath slowly calming down.

Kuch bhi nahi Jab darmayaan
Phir kyun hai dil, tere hi khwaab bunta

~~~~~~~
"But why papa" Ruhi wailed
"Ruhi try and understand" he reasoned out "Can't you go with the driver for just one day?" he asked frustrated "I have an important meeting"
"Fine" she bit out "But you will have to come and pick me up"
"okay" he replied slowly and walked out of the house. By afternoon, he would be normal enough to face her.
Regardless to say, there was no meeting. He had spent the entire day trying to do away with his scandalous dream "It was just a stupid dream... just a dream... just a dream" he had mumbled to himself for a hundred time like an anthem.
As afternoon dawned by, he knew he was still not ready to face her 'but what if she isn't there' he told himself 'she doesn't come to see Ruhi off every day. Maybe she won't come today' he told himself.
There he was, leaning on his car once again; his leg tapped the ground below impatiently. Was he nervous? Why was he behaving like a teen?
He knew the answer the instant he saw her, more than nervousness, it was the anticipation of facing her.
Chaha ki de, tujhko bhula
Par yeh bhi mumkin ho na sakaa...
But she seemed to be worried, and consoling a wailing Ruhi. He frowned and quickly rushed to them
"What happened?" He instantly picked Ruhi up in his arms, the father in him came back in full force "Ruh are you ok?" Ruhi said nothing; instead she hugged him with both her hands and buried her face in the crook of his neck. Patting Ruhi's back slowly he looked at Ishita who had chosen the wrong time to nervously chew her lower lip. He closed his eyes in frustration.
"What happened?" he asked again, this time determined not to look at her
"Woh" she whispered "I told her what I told you last night"
He looked point blank at her not knowing what to do in this situation
Getting no response from him, she continued "I think it was a wrong decision, Mr Bhalla" she then put her hand on ruhi's back and patted her, accidently touching Raman's hand, he pulled back instantly which didn't go unnoticed by her "Ruh" she said softly "I was just kidding beta. I'll come to you this evening"
Ruhi instantly looked at her with hopeful eyes "Promise" she said
"Pakka promise" Ishita replied with a smile.
It was not just Ruhi whose heart jumped with joy that moment. There was someone else who felt the dead butterflies in his stomach rising up. Was he that desperate? He wondered.
"I won't leave you ever trust me" she assured Ruhi again; his eyes shot up at that
"Don't make promises of forever that you can't keep" he said sternly
"I intend to keep my promise Mr. Bhalla" he heard her say with determination, damn the hopeful butterflies.
Dil sambhal ja zara
Phir mohabbat karne chala hai tu...
That evening, he once again stood by his window looking at the two most beautiful women in front of his eyes laughing to their heart's content. The picture was so perfect and beautiful that his sinful heart wanted it forever this way. He felt like he was finally at home. He wanted the dream, he told himself; he wanted it to be true. He wanted her in their lives; he wanted her to keep her promise of never leaving Ruhi. He needed her all for himself. Was he growing bold? Was it the right thing to do? None of these questions mattered to him anymore.
He walked out towards them with purposeful strides. After all these years, he finally knew what he wanted. He felt like a free bird, freed out of the cage of his own loneliness.
He laughed at his own stupidity and accepted that he had made the same mistake again. He was a man in love once again... damn his stupid heart.
Dil yahin ruk ja zara
Phir mohabbat karne chala hai tu...
