Chapter 5:

Wednesday of the week in San Francisco:

Ishita is sitting with a man in a nice suit in the hotel caf. They are discussing something. He gets her to sign some papers and leaves. Ishita thought that her and subbu's relationship was pure, sacred and everlasting. But her dream was shattered. She felt her heart break into million pieces. The papers she just signed were her and subbu's divorce papers.

The irony was that at this time when she needed her mom the most, she didn't have her. She immediately thought about Toshiji and wanted to talk to her. But then drops the idea thinking that Toshiji will tell Raman and she did not want to burden her friend. She wanted Raman's shoulder to cry on. But that did not seem appropriate to her. She wanted somebody to hold her and tell her that everything is going to be ok, just hang in there. But she did not have anybody. at this time, she felt like she is an orphan, na aage koi or na piche koi. just her in this big, scary, wild world of wolves.

Ishita hasn't been in contact with Raman at all these past three days. after her meet with the lawyer, she decides to text him.

Ishita: Raman, I am not feeling well. I don't think I will be able to attend the conference.

Raman: what happened? Have you been to a doctor? Do you have any medicine?

Ishita :(lies)Yes, raman, i have taken medicine. Will you be ok with my absence?

Raman: yes of course. You take care. We fly back on Saturday night. Will come pick you up

Ishita: ok. Thanks a lot. See you on Saturday

Ishita in her grief forgot two minute details: 1. Raman being her friend and being kind hearted would come check on her, and 2. for pick up, he will have to come to the hotel.

At that moment though she did not care. She went back to her crying and regrets set in. she trusted that man with her life, her heart and her soul.

Few lines from a song Mujh mein tu from a movie Special 26 fits the situation

Mujh mein tu

Tu hi tu basa

Naino mein jaise khwab sa

Jo tu na ho to paani paani naina

Jo tu na ho to mein bhi hunga mein na

Tujhi se muje sab ata

In between all of this, Ishita sees a flash of her parents in front of her eyes, her pleading mother in front of her almost out of the door father. She immediately wipes her tears and goes to the mirror, looks at herself and says:

Bas Ishita, enough of the crying. Don't be like mom. You have to fight. There is no other option but to overcome this. Just remember one thing, love is bul****t. She screamed out "NEVER AGAIN".

As far as Raman's whereabouts are concerned:

Ishita was right. After his work was over, that same day, Raman goes to Ishita's house to see her.

He rings the bell

Subbu: (surprised) Hello sir, you, here????
Raman: yeah, I came to check on Ishita since she is sick/

Subbu: (shocked now) Ishita??? Here????

Raman: yeah, we flew in Sunday night and I dropped her off here that night itself to celebrate your birthday.

Raman is baffled. He is ishita's friend after all. What must have happened? And where is Ishita?

Raman: Subbu, did something happened? Where is she? Now Raman is in his angry Raavan Kumar mode. He grabs subbu's collars and says: what did you do to her?? Tell me right now or I will kill you with my bare hands.

Subbu: I don't know where she is at. She is a coward. Couldn't even face me and ran away like a loser.

Raman: if anything happens to her, I will not leave you. Mark my words. I will hunt you down.

Subbu: looks like Ishita has found somebody too. Now I don't fell as bad.

And subbu shuts the door on Raman's face.

Now Raman is so angry and worried that he doesn't register subbu's words. He immediately calls ishita, she doesn't answer.

Few minutes later, Raman calls her at least 5 times. she does not answer. he texts her

Raman: ishita, where are you? I went to your place, subbu didn't even know you are here. What is going on? I am really worried for you. Please at least tell me that you are ok.

No response.

Raman has been frantically searching for her everywhere. But he doesn't find her. He is restless, scared for her safety and well being. he gets up to go to police station and all of a sudden, he gets a text message from ishita.

Ishita: Raman, I am OK. I don't want to talk about it. I am ok. I will see you on Saturday.

She wanted to keep it short. She didn't feel like talking to anybody, especially Raman. She did not want to burden him with her problems.

But he calls. This time Ishita knew she better answer, if she doesnt want him banging at her hotel room door at this wee hours of night. she better answer.

Raman: Raman: where the hell are you? why aren't you answering my phone calls or text messages. I have been searching for you every where like a mad man. do you even care?

Ishita goes silent.

Raman: Ishitaaa??? Tell me what is wrong? do you want me to come over? tell me where you are at. I will be there before you know it.

Ishita: no Raman. don't worry about me. I am ok. I don'r feel like talking right now.

Raman half heatedly agrees and lets her go.

During the rest of the time, she stayed in her room alone, didn't eat, But texted Raman twice daily to let him know she was ok and not to worry.

Our Raman being Raman, worried about her a lot. He was furious at her that she wouldn't tell him where she is staying at. Raman cares for her and wants to be by her side in her moment of despair. He wants to be the friend who is with you in your tough times.

But Ishita wanted to be alone to get her thoughts together, to think about their future.

The lawyer was paid a hefty fee to process the divorce within this week while she was there. By end of Wednesday , subbu had signed the papers and by Friday, Mrs. Ishita Reddy has become Miss. Ishita Iyer again. But this time with a lot more pain and anguish. One thing though Ishita had learned from her mom is that life goes on no matter what and that we all have a fighter inside us, we just have to be brave enough to face the reality and fight it. Subbu gave her hefty alimony because he wanted to get rid of her. This hurt Ishita even more, the thought that it was so easy for subbu to break their relationship.

They were leaving the country on Saturday at 5.00pm. Subbu has not once tried to talk to Ishita. Ishita is still in not her senses, she can't get rid of the thought that subbu is no longer is in her life. She wanted to get away from everything that reminded her of subbu and their time spent together. So the second time in last four months, Ishita takes a decision to move to India, but this time, never to return.

She texted Raman her address at 4.00pm on Saturday. Raman was there within 30min. he was waiting for her in the lobby. He sees her coming down the stairs and what he sees shocks him.

He sees ishita with no mangalsutra and sindoor. He sees swollen red eyes. The smile from her lips gone. The glint in her eyes gone. The glow from her face gone.

She reaches where Raman is standing

Ishita: hello Raman, how was the conference?

Raman: arrre conference ko maro goli. What happened to you?

Ishita: Raman, I told you na, I don't want to talk about it. And it is too personal. I don't think you have to worry about it.

Raman: too personal??? Really????

Ishita: haa, mein aapko strees nahi dena chahati. This doesn't concern you in any ways

Raman: it does. You are my closest friend. I care for you and your well being. Whatever makes you look like this is my concern. Now jyada footage mat khavo. Batavo kya hua?

Ishita: I can't tell you right now. Let's go

Raman sees tears forming in her eyes. He doesn't understand why he is so much worried about her. Why her tears scare him? Why does he want to know what happened between her and subbu? He goes close to her and tries to envelope her in a hug, but Ishita turns around and rushes to the waiting car.

In the flight also, ishita chose a seat at the far corner of the jet, away from Raman. She is trying to make sure that she avoid any eye contact with him to keep her tears at bay. And also to avoid conversation.

The whole way, she kept writing NEVER AGAIN in her note pad. And kept crying. Between all of these, her tired mind and body forces her to fall asleep.

Once Raman is sure that she is sleeping, he moves to her side. He looks at her for few seconds. He is wondering what has transpired between her and subbu that had broken the ever so strong Ishita Reddy. Suddenly his eyes fall on her notepad and he reads: NEVER AGAIN and wonders of the significance of those two words. He takes the note pad, puts it in the next seat and covers her with a warm blanket. He pats her head ever so lightly and caresses her hair. He immediately pulls his hand back, wondering what made him caress her hair.

Raman is now just waiting for the time when ishita would come and share her pain with him.

What do you all think? Will there ever be time when Ishita will willingly share her pain with Raman.
