I guess they had to show something which will bring Ashok's true face infront of Shagun, and which will also in some aspect affect Ishita and Raman. So, what better way then to use Mihika in this. I mean if Ashok was just caught with some random girl, it wouldn't affect Ishita and Raman as much, so this drama.
