I believe they were both trying to cheer up the other person, when they thought the other person was going to start crying or get sadder...
Either way, "Non-sense" isn't the word I would use, because there is no sense in grief and sorrow.
Everyone deals with things differently. some may listen to music, some may read, some may talk, some may go for a walk... that doesn't mean they aren't thinking about the person who's lying on the bed.
