what people don't understand is that each one has their preferences in life and live accordingly.

for that matter there are many people out there who wear the trendiest clothes use a lot of make up and look gorgeous but when they open their mouth to speak they cannot even speak a word of English.

then they would say knowing English is not a measure of "modern" ness. then what is being "modern"?

so true. and when you follow rites and rituals they think you are stupid. and they come and try to bother you to follow more 'rituals" which you think are idiotic or try to "marry off" your daughters at "age eighteen" only because you follow religious rites correctly. many come and ask "don't you fast"? "fasting" is not a measure of religiousness. they do not understand you treat your son and daughter the same way and want them both educated the same way. or that your daughter or yourself is independant in your own right as a working woman.

Knowing English and wearing Western clothes does not mean that one is "Modern".

I think having the guts to be "Modern" is in your thinking and how you treat other human beings around you.

Making other women feel degraded and thinking of them as competition and always trying to put them down by words or action is where many women fail to see how much more damage they are doing to their own gender.

Rites and rituals are fine in their place but to force people to follow them and then look down at them if they do not agree is just as wrong.

The biggest change has to come where women are not treated as second class citizens and give them due respect and where when a daughter is born many people still think that she is a burden.

Mothers have to teach their sons how to respect and treat women when they are very young and make sure that any rudeness or bad treatment will NOT be tolerated in the house or in the outside world.
There is absolutely no need to coin the word "Behenji" to put another woman down in any society.

very well said. knowing English and respecting the other person who does not know English and trying to communicate with them in the language they know best is what is considered considerate.

Being "modern" is a "broad term" being trendy oneself , and then being judgmental on others how can these people be called "modern"?

men going to parties themselves but who do not care that their wives are not allowed to accompany them to parties, by the elders in the house wives/daughter in law who are not allowed to dress up in the way they want ( let us just say not "modern" not "trendy" just what a woman wishes to dress up as ) thinking their wives are less only because they are women. that is conflicting behavior

I know many "modern" women ( sorry I mean trendily dressed fashionable women who are educated and have a career) speak and are friendly with the so called "behenji" (sorry for the word again.) just in every normal way because they see through the layer of dressing fashionable or old fashioned and look at the person inside. such people are also there.

you are "x" person and you follow certain religious rites according to your beliefs and you have a girl and a boy and you treat them equally, you and your husband take decisions exercising their rights equally. ;daughters are educated, sons are educated. both work . you yourself work even though you are so called "behenji"

and someone just knocks at your door asking you to "take part" in some "religious" function which you do not believe in or follow they say they have been watching you because you are so "tradional" they "chose" you to take part in this "pooja paath" you do not want to take part in that organised by that person. your religious beliefs are your own. just because you follow your beliefs correctly and not "so called" modern does not mean you want to take part in "more religious functions" you may have some other appointment on that day. why do they typify you?

and then this lady brings a "groom" for your "eighteen year old" daughter thinking she is doing you a "favor"

all this is because you are a so called "behenji" even though you are educated/a working woman/ who keeps track of current affairs/who reads the newspaper and follows news /your general knowledge is good/ you and your husband communicate like friends jovial and light hearted /you know how to be hygienic /what is the correct procedure to follow as per nutritional requirements as far as food is concerned. can even fix a fuse when the occasion arises.

my question is why does the world "typify" you that too mostly in India. this "traditional/modern" stuff is very prevalent.

if you are "modern" you should know or try to know how to use the fork and knife correctly just so that you do not goof up when the occasion arises. know table manners, know how to speak and take part in a conversation, how to be in public so that no one frowns upon you.

these are important. even to learn so that you do not goof up in public. not knowing English is not a crime. but knowing English helps just as knowing any language helps when the need arises.

an educated woman like ishita why should she be called a "behenji" when she must be aware of trends. has the independence to make her own decisions. is not dependant on others
