You have judged on many shows, what made you chose X Factor?
X factor is the world's biggest music show and has been adapted by several countries successfully. I don't call it a reality show because, according to me, most reality shows are staged. X factor is a true show of music. The team behind it, Sony and Freemantle, are fantastic. I wouldn't have been part of this show if it weren't for the concept and the team. I wouldn't have been part of a show if it was fake or I was told to fight with my co-judges or pass nasty comments to contestants. That was a major reason why after Indian idol one and two, I didn't accept any reality shows. I chose children's shows which were cleaner. I didn't accept a big show as stakes are higher in big shows and for trps, you have to do certain things

What do you think of reality shows on tv today?
Today, there are so many music shows that it has become routine. Logon ne music shows peet peet ke, unki aisi ki taise kar di hai. I have done many music reality shows and I even took a break from judging on tv as they all seem repetitive. I love music shows and honing talent on tv. People who understand and love music are very lucky but luckier are people who create music. You meet so many people in your journey on a tv show. X factor is a big show which I loved on face value and after being associated with it for a while now, I truly am connected with the idea. I feel lucky to be part of X factor.

There have been many shows and many winners but hardly a few made it big. Why do you think that is so?
The question is valid but there have been singers like Shreya, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Shekhar and many others who have got huge success in life post their reality shows. I believe you can't expect the show or the channel to support their artists forever. They have to work hard and struggle in life to get to higher levels in life. You might get a chance with a platform of a music reality show but what you do with it, is up to you, your hard work and talent.

What would you say is the USP of X Factor?
X Factor is a superb concept where after choosing 124 contestants, we select 24 gems after rigorous tests and then hone their talent by dividing them between the three judges, who become their mentors. As for X factor's USP, I would say there are many music shows, and like you have numerous cars, yet there is only one Rolls-Royce. Similarly, there is nothing that beats X Factor.

How has the rapport been with your co-judges Shreya Ghosal and Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
Sony's team, production house Freemantle and my co?judges -the experience with everyone of them has been truly fantastic. We create a magical atmosphere. I feel being positive and staying positive is the way to live life to the fullest. And we are all positive souls on the show. I have known Shreya since she was a kid in a music show and seen her growth as a singer. I am proud to share the panel with her. Oddly though, both Sanjayji and I have been in the same industry we never crossed paths and when we did, we jelled very well. He is not just a great producer-director and music composer but a greater person. He is a diamond at heart. Can you believe he is shy and non filmy?

Will any of you be as nasty as Simon Cowell is in the international format of the show?
No, we don't intend to do anything like that or copy him. It is unfair to compare two people.

Have you set any standards or benchmark for judging?
Not really. The three of us really respect each other and we always hear each other out in case of difference in opinion. I won't hold it against Sanjay if he takes up for someone I don't approve of. We talk things out and discuss our thoughts and come to a conclusion.

You have had a great association with Sony.
Yes, I have loved working with Sony every time and this time too the team has been commendable. We worked on time and wrapped up on time. The whole experience has been professional and well handled. Neither the judges nor the contestants were pushed hard or over exhausted. I am sure X factor will reach a high level and it will be a great success. I hope this X factor ranks the highest among all the X factors in the world.
