C h a p t e r 2

"Do you know of any kind of secret treasury hidden in the vicinity?" asked Ranaveer.
"I haven't heard of any." said Mitti, "Unless you count the recurring rumour about a haunted cave a few yojanas away from this place."

"I wonder what my father is after then. He has been working on a grand plan since a long time. I do not know the intricacies of the plan but it definitely involved the evacuation of this village and a treasure beyond any other."

"If the King is your father, why do you run from him?" asked Veer.
"Because he wants to kill me."
"What kind of a father would kill his own son?"
"I'll let you know when I've worked it out for myself." answered Ranaveer with a derisive chuckle. Mitti looked up from her work and said with a sneering smile, "Why blame the King? Didn't your father leave you at your birth? This one's still making amends!"

"Oh. I'm sorry." said Ranaveer, his smile dimming.
"You shouldn't be. I don't care, neither does Veer. It's been a long time and it's honestly does not matter any more. But now let us hear your guess about the reason behind your father's sudden urge to truncate your life."
"It's easy. The same old story. He had adopted me upon the words of a wandering monk, and now wants to cleanse his race when I served no real purpose."
"But that's horrible!" cried Veer, "Who gave him the right to accept and reject humans at will?!"
Mitti calmly replied, "It does not matter, Veer. The royalty is like that. Just by hearing the praises suiting the Gods, they consider themselves to have ascended to the level of the Celestials. And then, they start thinking that they have the right to play with the lives of the ordinary men placed under their care."

"But why?" the boy asked.

---

The two boys trekked up the mountainside, both breathless but determined. Ranaveer had persuaded Veer to escort him to the nearest hilltops where he could enjoy some counted minutes of freedom from the confinement amidst the four walls of the muddy house.

He knew this would land both him and Veer in trouble with Mitti, and he was sorry, but today he could not suppress the cravings of his own, carefree sixteen-years-old self.

Suddenly he felt a tug at his hand. "What's the matter, Veer?" he whispered. "What? I never said anything!" he whispered back. Ranaveer wondered but dismissed it to a stray branch or leaf.

---

Mitti looked at the boys sharing secret smiles and looks. She had been watching them for quite a while. She had also noticed both of them sneaking off to the riverside after sunset.

She let them believe that they could fool her.

The next morning she woke up the boys and informed them that she would have to be away for the next few days owing to a festival being held in the neighbouring village. She told them that she had arranged for the two of them to stay with a hermit living on the other slope of the hills bordering the village.

---

Ranaveer was amazed to see the speed with which Mitti could conjure up acquaintances and how well Veer adjusted to them.

The hermit's 'ashram' referred to dark and musty cave beside a waterfall. However, the boys had a lovely time dabbling in the little pool formed at the base of the falls and running around collecting eatables.

Finally when they had settled down for dinner, they heard a commotion from the end of the cave where the hermit liked to perform his penances.

Rushing to the corner of the cave, they found the sage lying on the floor gasping for breath. Ranaveer, more powerful than what he seemed to be, carried the hermit out under the moonlight and laid him against against a rock beside the falls.

Catching his breath, the hermit pulled Ranaveer close to himself and said, "Son, I know I am not going to live much longer. I must relieve myself of the secrets I have been holding on to for the greater part of my life." By this time Veer had also knelt down before the ailing man and was listing with rapt attention.

"You must understand that what I will reveal to you is extremely special, and equally dangerous. Thus, you two must be prepared to handle it's worth.
The mountain shelter that stays guarded behind this waterfall plays host to the most precious invention of all times. I am not aware of its exact nature. It is said that it had been designed to control the fates of the humans. There are five gates to this invention, guarded by Love, Death, Life, Trust and Temptations respectively. Each guard is symbolic and the invention is accessible to only the one that has successfully unlocked all five gates. Many have tried, but of no avail!
"

The boys looked at each other. Neither knew what to say.

After sometime the hermit asked them to take him to his resting place, where he intended to pass away in sleep.

However, the boys continually served him and encouraged him to fight so that after a tiring week the hermit was seen again, limping ahead to have a bath in the river, accompanied by the two boys.

They never spoke about that night again.
