Part 1

Aadi Parva Starts

Janmejaya, The Son Of Parikshit Had Been Performing A Yagya (Sacrifice) With His Three Brothers In The Sacred Land Of Kurukshetra, When A Puppy Arrived At The Place. The Brothers Of King, Thrashed Him, And The Puppy Went Back Crying To His Mother. His Mother Then Came To The Place And Asked, "Why Was My Son Beaten Up By Your Kinsmen, King ?" The King Or His Men Did Not Reply. Thus, The Mother Said Angrily, "O King, You Do Not Know Who Am I, And Thus You Have Committed This Crime. I, Devashuni Sarama, Curse You That As You Have Attacked This Small Puppy In Spite Of His Innocence, You Too Will Face A Sudden Trouble Which Will Destroy You."

The King Was Troubled By This Curse. When He Returned To Hastinapur, He Began Searching For A Suitable Sage Who Will Free Him Of This Curse. One Day, When He Went For Hunting, He Approached Sage Shutashrava To Let His Son Somashrava Go With King Janmejaya, As He [Somashrava] Was Famous For Nullifying Curses. Shutashrava Replied That He Had No Problem As His Son, Being Born From The Womb Of A Female Snake, Can Nullify Any Curse Other Than That Of Lord Shiva, But He Has An Oath To Grant Anything Asked By A Brahmin. The King Accepted Everything, As He Just Wanted To Get Rid Of His Curse. He Took Somshrava To His Brothers And Ordered Them To Follow All Orders Of Him [Somashrava] Without Judging Him, While He Went To Conquer The Kingdom Of Takshashila.

At This Time There Was A Sage Called Dhaumya, Who Had Three Main Students Namely Upamanyu, Aaruni And Ved. He [Dhaumya] Once Asked Aaruni, His Student From The Kingdom Of Panchal, To Repair The Borders Of His Fields, As Excess Of Water Had Been Leaking. Aaruni Went, But Unable To Repair The Borders, He Laid Down There Himself, To Stop The Leakage Of Water.

When He Did Not Return Till The Evening, Dhaumya Went To The Fields With His Other Two Students, To Search For Aaruni. On Hearing His [Aaruni's] Name Being Uttered By His Teacher, Aaruni Rose From His Position And Came In Front Of His Teacher Saying, "Sir You Told Me To Stop The Leakage Of Water From Your Fields, So, Unable To Repair The Borders I Was Lying In Place Of The Border Till Now. I Came Out As You Called Me. Give Me An Order As To What Should Be My Next Service To You Lord !" Dhaumya Replied, "You Have Risen Breaking The Kedarkhand (The Border Between Two Fields), Thus You Will Henceforth Be Called Uddalak (One Who Has Risen By Breaking The Border Between Two Fields). You Have Carried Out My Order Without Questioning Me, Thus You Will Be Blessed With Moksha, And The Vedas And All Other Holy Texts Will Be Present In Your Heart."

Aayod (Another Name Of Sage Dhaumya) Dhaumya Then Asked His Second Student, Upamanyu, To Take Care Of His Cows. Everyday Upamanyu Would Come To Offer His Respects To His Teacher In The Evening. One Day Dhaumya Asked, "What Do You Eat, Child ? You Appear A Bit Heavy." Upamanyu Replied, "Sir, I Beg For Alms And Eat Whatever I Get." The Teacher Said, "You Shouldn't Eat Anything Without Offering It To Me." From The Next Day, Upamanyu Would Offer All He Got As Alms To Sage Dhaumya, And He [Dhaumya] Took It."

After A Few Days, Dhaumya Again Asked, "My Child ! You Still Appear So Nourished, I Take Away All You Get For Alms, But Still You Haven't Grown Thin ? Tell Me, What Tricks Do You Play Behind My Back ?" Upamanyu Replied, "No Sir ! I Do Not Play Any Tricks, It's Only That After Giving What I Get In My First Round Of Begging, I Go Out To Seek Alms Once More, And I Eat What I Get Then." Dhaumya Replied, "You Shouldn't Go Out For A Second Round Of Begging. This Will Make You Greedy. And Don't You Know That By This Wrong Behavior Of Yours, You Are Taking Away The Part Of Some Other Beggar. Have You Even Thought That What Will The Other Beggar Eat If You Take Two Parts For Yourself ?" After That Upamanyu Went For Begging Only Once And Gave Up All He Got To His Master.

Dhaumya Once Again Questioned Him, "What Have You Been Up To Now ? You Appear Far More Heavy Than How I Saw Before." The Honest Student Replied, "Sir, I Eat The Extra Milk That Your Cows Give." Dhaumya Said, "You Should Not Even Touch The Milk Given By MY Cows Without MY Permission." The Teacher Asked Again As Upamanyu Did Not Become Malnourished As Expected. He [Upamanyu] Replied, "Sir, Now I Eat Only The Fen (A Kind Of Latex Produced By A Calf After Drinking Their Mother's Milk) For Living." Dhaumya Replied, " The Calves, Taking Pity At You, Produce More And More Fen, Which Hampers Their Growth. Thus, You Stop Eating That."

Upamanyu Continued With His Job Of Taking Care Of The Cows Adhering To All The Prohibitions Of His Teacher. One Day, Unable To Sustain The Pain Of Hunger, Upamanyu Ate The Poisonous Leaves Of An Arka Tree (Aakanda Tree, I Don't Know What It Is Actually 😕) Which Made Him Blind. While Returning, The Unfortunate Student Could Not Keep His Balance And Fell Into A Deep Well, And Was Unable To Get Out.

After Sunset, Guru Dhaumya Thought, As Upamanyu Did Not Return, That Maybe He [Upamanyu] Was Angry With Him [Dhaumya] As He Had Actually Prohibited His Student From Eating Practically ANYTHING. He Went Out With His Students To Search For Him. Upamanyu Shouted For Help As He Heard Sounds Coming From The Ground, He Narrated How He Had Become Blind And Had Fallen Into The Well. Dhaumya Approached The Well And Asked Him To Pray To The Twin Gods, Ashwinikumars (The Doctors Of The Gods), Who Would Cure Him Of His Blindness.

Upamanyu Prayed, And The Gods Appeared In Front Of Him, And Asked Him To Drink A Potion Which Will Cure Him. But Upamanyu Rejected As He Had Promised To Offer Everything To His Teacher Before Eating. The Gods Tried To Persuade Him To Drink It Saying That Even His Teacher Had Drank It When He Was A Student But Upamanyu Was Adamant Too. At Last Seeing His True Devotion Towards His Teacher, The Twin Gods Granted Him Vision Without Any Potion And Also Brought Him Out Safely Out Of The Well. They Said That As Dhaumya Had Literally Tortured His Students, His Teeth Will Become As Black As The Black Iron, And Upamanyu's Teeth, Due To His True Obedience, Will Become As White As A Diamond. When He [Upamanyu] Later Approached Dhaumya, He Blessed Him With The Knowledge Of All The Holy Texts, And Thus Ended Upamanyu's Test Of Loyalty Towards His Guru (Teacher).

Now, It Was The Turns Of The Third Student Ved, Who Was Asked To Stay With Dhaumya And Serve Him or A Few Years. He Served His Teacher, And Even Stayed Like An Ox, Who Carried Loads, And Even Bore With Hunger And Seasons, To Complete His Test. He Too Achieved The Greatest Knowledge By Pleasing The Great Sage, Dhaumya.
