Part 7

Janmejaya's Sarpasatra

On Hearing About The Cause Of His Father's Death From His Ministers, Janmejaya Was Enraged, And He Took An Oath To Destroy Takshak Along With His Whole Family Of Snakes. Janmejaya Asked The Brahmins Of His Kingdom, "Is There Any Way, In Which I Can Finish Off That Takshak Along With His Friends And Relatives ?" The Priests Said That There Was A Yagya Called Sarpa-satra Which Could Fulfill The King's Oath.

Upon The King's Orders, Preparations Started For The Huge Sacrifice. While The Place For The Sacrifice Was Being Measured, An Astrologer Predicted That A Brahmin Would Be The Reason For The Destruction Of This Yagya. Janmejaya Ordered The Doorkeeper Not Let Anyone Inside Without His [Janmejaya's] Permission. So, The Grand Sarpa-satra Started. The Priests Wearing Black Robes, Their Eyes Red And Teary With The Smoke, Began Uttering The Holy Shlokas Or Spells To Drag Along The Snakes And 'Sacrifice' Them Into The Burning Fire.

Takshak Went To Lord Indra, His Friend, For Protection. Lord Indra Hid The Snake In His Robes. Distressed To See The Death Of His Relatives' Death, Vaasuki Naag Went To His Sister Manasa And Prayed To Her Son Aastik To Save Them. Aastik Agreed.

Aastik Went To The Holy Place, But The Doorkeeper Did Not Let Him Enter. The Young And Learned Sage Started To Pray To Janmejaya Wishing For His [Aastik's] Relatives. Janmejaya Was Pleased To Hear Aastik. He [Janmejaya] Sought Permission From The Sages Present To Bestow Upon The Sage Aastik A Boon. The Sages Said That The King Could Do Whatever He Wanted, But Not Before The Sacrifice Of Takshak.

The Main Priest, Chandabhargav Was Specifically Displeased At The King's Inclination On Giving A Boon To The Newcomer, And Thus He Distracted The King By Telling Him That Takshak Might Have Sought Refuge From Lord Indra And Upon The Request Of The King, The Brahmins Called Upon Lord Indra.

Indra Arrived In His Chariot With Takshak Hidden In His Robes. Janmejaya Was Angered And He Said, "Okay, If Takshak Doesn't Want To Come Out, Then Let Lord Indra Be Burned Along With Him." So, All The Priests Increased Their Concentration In Calling Forth Takshak, (Lord Indra Had Fled Fearing His Life) Who Approached The Sacrificial Fire At A Great Speed, Charmed By The Spells. Seeing His Maternal Uncle In Danger, Aastik Raised His Hand And Said, "Tishtha, Tishtha, Tishtha. (Stop, Stop, Stop.)" Takshak Stopped In Mid-air And Aastik Went Into The Sacrificial Grounds. As A Boon He [Aastik] Asked, "I Wish For The End Of This Sarpa-satra." The King Had No Other Choice Than To Obey The Sage, After He [Aastik] Had Denied Gold, Silver And Other Wealth As An Alternative Boon.

Naagraaj Vaasuki Blessed Aastik That Whichever Snake Will Dare To Disobey Him [Aastik] Will Face An Inevitable Death.
