Time is Key
We are on the sets of Waqt Batayega Kaun Apna Kaun Paraaya at Saina Resort, Madh Island. The set is decked up in such a way that it looks like some marriage ceremony is going to take place. Production hands are busy giving orders to helping hands who are decorating the mandap and also fixing up lights on the trees around. One by one we see cars rolling in and artistes of the serial trooping in. It is a eight o'clock shift and time is slowly tricking away. We see director Rajiv Bhanot lost in his thought. As we approach him, he lets on that the serial is a heart-rendering story of a father and a daughter who is adopted at an early age. As he is narrating the story, a call for the shoot is given. Bhanot excuses himself and proceeds to his seat just besides the camera. Everyone takes their respective places. Upen (Aroop Deb), younger son of Biswajeet Raichowdhury (Mukesh Khanna) is getting married and he is coming out of his house with Panditji (Gufi Paintal) along with his relatives and friends. A band has been summoned to enhance the mood. Meanwhile we see Mukesh Khanna coming to the set all decked up looking a perfect Bengali. After we introduce ourselves, he sits for a small chat with us. "Sorry I can give you around ten minutes for I have to feature in the next shot," he says. One is seeing him in a serial after a long time, we want to know what attracted him to the show? "You might be knowing very well that I don't go begging for roles. I am an actor first and have my own reservations about taking up roles. I have and will never do weak and negative roles and always go for strong, positive roles. When Dheerajji offered me this role, I liked it but asked him to wait for I had another offer on hold. But that didn't happen and I accepted the offer," informs Khanna. Giving an outline of the story Khanna says, "The story begins with me and my wife having two sons and longing for a daughter. Once pregnant my wife Yashomati (Kishori Sahane) gives birth to a still-born daughter after which doctors declare that she will not be able to conceive in future. We happen to see an abandoned baby girl who we later adopt and name Rudra (Payal Sarkar). My sister buwa, on the other hand, doesn't like our move for she has an ulterior motive to get her daughter planted in our domain. Meanwhile the father and daughter develop a strong bond and Rudra grows up as one in the family. Biswajeet loves his daughter so much that he treats her above his sons. In order to make her plan succeed, buwa constantly poisons my wife, so much so Yashomati doubts that Rudra is a result of my extra marital affairs." A production boy comes to us and fetches Khanna for the shoot that is to happen immediately. Payal Sarkar approaches us introducing herself as Rudra. Out of anxiety we ask her what kind of role she plays in the serial. "My role is very sensitive but my character is very positive. My mother Yashomati doesn't like me at all but I take every thing in my stride because I have my father and Daima (Nishigandha Wad) besides me. Rudra can share all her woes and happiness with her father and Daima but not with her mother. Her brother Bankim and Upendra too don't like her and play every trick of the trade to harass her." Just yesterday the unit was shooting a scene in which the marriage procession has left the Raichowdhury home without Rudra; what was Rudra's reactions to this? " Rudra is pained of her being left out of the marriage proceedings but cannot do anything," she exclaims. There is a small break when artistes go into their vanity van for a change. Very soon we find Arrup Paul who plays Chakravarti coming out of his van and ask him to join us for a talk. Talking about his character Arrup says, "Chakravarti is a Zamindar but his zamindaari has been blown away. Now, he only pretends to be one. Knowing the Raichowdhury's, well he and his wife plot to marry their daughter into that family because they think that by that the daughter will not only be happy alone but they too will be among a lot of wealth. Entering the Raichowdhury house at a time when the internal politics is at its peak seems a blessing in disguise for the entire Chakravarti family."
