Many of us are at least somewhat clued-in to celebrity gossip, whether we want to be or not. We just experienced an example of this ubiquitous knowledge last week when surveillance footage surfaced of Beyonce's sister Solange attacking Jay-Z in an elevator. "Everyone" was talking about it. Whether or not you peruse celebrity gossip blogs or magazines, you probably heard something about this celebrity showdown via social media or friends.
Though you may not personally be obsessed with celebrities, many people are, and this obsession can cause cultural paradigm shifts. Some of these are good but In other cases, celebrity culture and obsession with status, wealth and looks can convey that "average" people aren't good enough, and this can be damaging to young people as they grow and find their place in the world. Some researchers posit that there is, in fact, a growing disorder called Celebrity Worship Syndrome, though this personality disorder is not yet classified.
Being interested in the personal lives of celebrities might seem like harmless fun, but is it?
