Drug abuse is a difficult trend which has various social, cultural, biological, geographical, historical and economic features. The break-down of the old joint family system, lack of parental love and care in modern nuclear families where both parents are working, decline of old religious and moral values etc lead to a rise in the number of drug addicts who take drugs to escape hard realities of life. Drug abuse has a damaging impact on society. It has led to increase in the crime rate as incidence of eve- teasing, group clashes, assault and impulsive murders increase with drug abuse.

Given the seriousness of the problem it is strange that the television medium refers to be mum on the subject. Leave alone a whole show, not even a marginal character gets to talk about this grave issue. While the bold new face of Hindi Television is raising its voice about a number of taboo topics, like rape, female infanticide, extra marital affairs, we are yet to come up with shows that also deal with such problems. There are only two exceptions to this. One is a newly started show on Sony Television called Power and the other is a character in Color's Uttaran called Vansh.

Powder is set in the frightening scenario of substance abuse. Powder is the story of drug lord Naved Ansari and his empire. It tries to provide an insight into the world of drug peddlers and pushers. The vicarious system is often operated by those who are either addicted to the dangerous stuff themselves or those who will never give in to temptation. Powder is also the story of an honest team of officers from the Narcotics Control Bureau led by Usmaan Malik who plans to nab Ansari. The web of power, compulsion, money, values, corruption, justice, and deceit is what powder will take you through on its journey.

Vansh is an important character in Uttaran. He is an addict and has been so since childhood. His struggle to fight off the addiction has been a major turning point of the serial. If Vansh is able to emerge victorious he will help to send out a positive message to other people in the same boat. Uttaran producers deserve a pat on their back for daring to make a 'junkie' a major character in the serial, thereby helping to raise awareness about substance abuse.

vansh should at least be maintained as a positive and a character with some spine
now from drug -addict he is shown as iccha-addict
and as another prey for TAPNI..
vansh should not be another iccha for tappu 😡

I completely agree with this article. Maybe we are sick of Tapu & Nani's evilness in this show, but still we are witnessing the process of beginning of new life for a drug addict who wants to change and how the society is going to react on it.
Maybe most of us like Veer-Ichcha pair but the question is whether an addict deserve a chance to fall in love and get married like other 'normal' people or not.
Hats off to Rohit Khurana for taking up such a never-done-in-Indian-Televison challenge]ing role and playing the character of an addict 'Vansh' so naturally & beautifully.👏👏👏
Bravo to him for showing us the turmoil and internal fears of an addict so convincingly.👏👏👏

yes definitely the article is good
starting a life afresh is also very much required ..
but the creatives could have shown it with another female lead ..not with iccha
once vansh comes to know about iccha-veer they are all chances that he might again go back to depression and to drugs !!
and the way ichha and TAPNI are manipulating to get iccha-vansh married is so disgusting ..
just for the sake of tappu's khushi she is marrying - without knowing what effect its going to have on vansh ....

cv's could have been more creative ..could have shown vansh picking up his painting again ..
concentrating on his hobbies but no instead they have made him romance a girl ..
and have made him a " bechara" now ..

rohit is realy good in acting
but the character vansh is realy not giving any message to society
in today;s episode i realy thought he must be taking some oath
by keeping his hands over the candle
but he was begging to mai
that he wants ichaaaa
he is behaving like a kid
another ziddi
he is trying to hurt himself for getting ichaa
he is not fighting with drugs
acttually through uttaran no messages r not gg to be shown

Vanshes portrayal is a double edged sword both with positive and negative characteristics. Sometimes an addict may put their obsession to some other direction. So in Vansh it is Ichcha his obsession or his new drug if you wanna call it that. Its true do addicts deserve a second chance? Then again even a criminal is given another opportunity to clean their act. So why not an addict? At least the tabu is shown in an almost positive light. Rohit has done a marvelous job with the script he was given portraying an addict. Yes he acts childish but don't forget this Drug thing was from childhood so he missed out on being a child and hasn't grown out of it and be allowed to act as a grown up.

In whatever shows we have seen so far, atleast there is one character who knows the particular vamp is evil there but here in Uttaran, no one knows Tapasya's evilness... Even Jogi & Veer are now thinking that Tapasya is changed and we certainly do not have any expectations from Ichcha.
Atleast Vansh should be made aware by the creatives that how evil Tapasya is. He seems to be the only one who speak his guts whether right or wrong. He got a 2nd life after his drug addiction and such people are very dangerous. I hope he becomes dangerous for Tapasya only.

rohit is a very good actor 👍🏼
he deserves more attention and i hope his ranking goes higher.
he has portrayed the character vansh excellently.
i am sure vansh will change when he gets married to ichcha and may be he'll know about evil deeds of tapasya.
well his present ranking(27/2/2010) is:
276
it is better from last time
