Jasmine’s Characterization

We’ve had quite a few discussions on the flaws we see in Jasmine’s characterization on the forum. @music_girl suggested making a separate thread so here’s one.

I’ll start by copy-pasting two of my earlier posts and changing them a bit.

In my opinion, Jasmine wasn’t supposed to be a villain. Until she found out that Tejo knew she was just a flawed character but ITV wanted to make sure that they send the message that Fatejo is end game so they made her a villain.

They could have easily written her as a confused character who didn’t know better because she was never given the opportunity. Her feeling lonely, coming off the throne that she had been sitting on for so many years. Trying to come to terms with the fact that people don’t like her. Trying to hold on to how things were in the past and yes, being self-centered because it was her character.
I feel like part of the problem is that she changed her motivations overnight. She stopped caring about Canada and Tejo which were the biggest things in her life earlier. Jasmine’s love for Tejo was what made me like her and now the makers have forgotten about it. Even when she was obsessed with Canada she said that she’ll take Tejo along, then how can she forget her all of a sudden? She could have still become very mad at the idea of Fateh moving on and acted out too but it would have been nice to see her conflict between care for Tejo and frustration/selfishness.

Yes even I wished they could have let Jasmin be a grey character rather than turning negative !

But it seems they always put on hints about Jasmin being insensitive about everything else when her wish , interests are in line. She always reacts aggressively to a situation spl I remember two incidents with those priests when they said about her future is not in Canada.

Regarding Fateh, I felt she turned more obsessed after realizing how different he used to behave with her compared to Gippy , combined with her ego. I still don't feel she is really in love with him. It's more it's a good bet, she can't loose ! ( might be wrong here )

But it's sad to see she is never conflicted in her emotion regarding Tejo . Either she is still not realizing that her actions gonna impact Tejo and things can't never go back to how it was before .

Or she is too self obsessed to have real caring feeling . It was more of a dependency from her side. My two cent for first one here , and probably they will keep her redemption option open in that way .

I actually don't think she loves Fateh. She keeps thinking about him saying he will fulfil her dreams and he is her gulam who will stand against the world for her, that is her definition and memory of Fateh, not the simple guy who agreed to give up all his hard work and live in a small hut for her. For her, Gippy is not treating her like a princess and she is too gorgeous for anyone to move on from her, and that ego and pride is all she cares about, even over her own family and sister.

She knows she is manipulating her family and sister but just doesn't care as long as she gets her slave back who will take her to Canada.

I am the youngest in a huge family and yes, we are more protected and yes, elder siblings do take a lot of blame, but that earns them that high level where you would do anything for them, not to them. She is just an insensitive, manipulative girl who lives in her bubble of grandeur.

Honestly, I always found Jasmine's character annoying but there was a likable side to her. I didn't expect Jasmine to be completely negative especially after how the trio fought against Jas the fraud. Anyway, I do feel like she's gonna learn a lesson the hard way and turn positive in the end.

I know right, this kind of plot is seriously getting old where one sister is hell bent on breaking another sister marriage. Why makers always have to show that a single guy can break all the love between two sisters.

Its really not fair, they could have shown jasmine to be spoilt, irrational without changing her in a psycho overnight.

And what about her canada dream han. Earlier they showed that canada is the only thing which matters to her and now they abruptly left that plot without explanation and changed her fixation from canada to fateh. I mean what was the need?

I cannot understand her now, so i am just going to take my brain out while watching her scenes, otherwise i would be suffering from headache..

I feel Jasmine's character is the one the writer needs to work more on it since everything literally revolves around her.

She used to be likeable in the start, I like how clear she was on what she wanted and would tell everyone, she wasn't afraid. I thought it was nice because nobody has to live according to others wishes , she is clear.

However, the fact she needs a guy to complete her dreams.

Suddenly Canada obsession was over.

She became too mean and unlikeable, mean and rude to everyone, plainly disregarding Tejo... like she knows Fateh was broken because of her but she doesn't realise Tejo is equally as broken as him...

So she can be dumb at times, depend on others, shallow and mean.

I don't find her being manipulative a bad trait when j appreciated manipulative female characters before but here it's like being cute and manipulate others the only thing she can do. And she is playing with her own sister and so inconsiderate of her feelings...

She is the same girl that remembered Tejo after the wedding not Fateh...

Should have given her more likeable traits and by likeable it's not necessary good qualities, just some traits to add some nuance to the character.

Her character is, weird. I love people who are not afraid to make clear what they want, and work for it. Her game plan all along though has been I'll make someone else work for it. And now even her dreams are diminutive in front of her ego and pride. I would have considered her redeemable until she rejected Fateh. Afterwards, her treatment of Tejo and rest of her family makes her just an awful person.

Until now most of her abusive behavior towards Tejo has been verbal, when she starts acting out on her vile schemes, that would just cement her character as a villain.

More important for me than her redeeming arch would be, if she does something really harmful towards anyone, they should not forgive her for it. I hate it that someone would do absolutely despicable stuff and then it does not matter somehow.

I have seen manipulative female characters and loved them because they were bada**. Jasmine doesn't fit into that category, probably because her motivations are stupid/non-existent and this manipulation is directed towards the sister who has done so much for her. Her remembering Tejo after the wedding is what gave me hope regarding her character. It is my favourite scene of hers till date. Either the writers have deleted it from their memory or they are going to use it during redemption track.

You shouldn't have such hopes from ITV. In ITV, everything is forgiven post one speech by the leads and an apology from the other character, maybe a week or two of begging. After all, the leads have to be mahaan.🤔

Do we have an episode today?

I think she might have a redemption arc. It would be nice but I hope they don't make her fall too low
