she is a shield, meaning she can shield herself from other vampires talents, like edward's, jane's, aro's, etc. if she concentrates she can shield other people as well, keeping large groups of people safe at the same time. she can also take her shield off if she concentrates, which allowed edward to read her thoughts near the end of the story at one point. but her shield is only a ''mental'' shield. she can only shield from talents that ''work inside the mind'', like edward's, aro's, jane's..etc. she can't shield from something physical or something that doesn't work inside the mind. for example, she can't shield from jasper's talents coz jasper controls your emotions physically, it's like you can actually feel it, it's not an illusion like jane's talent. it's the same with alice. she sees visions of outcomes, not the reasons and thoughts behind the decisions that create them. it's ''outside the mind''.
