Hi Twilighters,

I am making this topic out of prue frustration. Why is Meyer being hailed has the Next JK Rowling!?

IF she is being hailed as the next JK Rowling thats surely is enough grounds to compare the two authors!

Even though i totally disagree with the fact that they should not be compared as they are both so unique from each other! (Thats my emotional reponse to it!) BUT lets be practical and assess the FACTS & FIGURES!

I love Rowling and Meyer and don't want them to be compared but i refuse to accpet the notorious rumour that Meyer is the Next Rowling! NEVER! 😆

So as a reader I want the record set straight! Who is the better author?!

So all the people who are saying Meyer is the next JK Rowling...

Lets COMPARE!

Here we go...

Some people think Meyer is a good writer. Sure, I'll give you that. However, there is a fine line between a "good" writer and someone as brilliant as Rowling. How can you even think to compare the two!?

Rowling's writing is so detailed and carefully thought out.. way up there with the likes of Tolkien and Grisham. Meyer, on the other hand? Yeah, she has a good story plot.. but her writing just doesn't flow together as well, you know? And she obviously doesn't really spend that much time on detail, whereas Rowling has thought of basically every single tiny, minor, insignificant and unimportant detail.

Besides the fact that they are both female authors, I can't say they really have all that much in common.. so how can people even think to say that Meyer is on her way to becoming the next Rowling!? She's not even close!

I'm an avid HP fan and an avid Twilight fan, but sorry Stephenie you aren't going to be the next JK Rowling...you still need to improve your characters and your plot...JK Rowling is both gifted and superb simply because she was smart enough to have a plan written out for the series...that she worked on for SEVEN years...and not only did Harry Potter revolutionize the way books are read by children...it has also allowed adults to be able to read typical "kids" stories without scorn.

Please just compare the writers writing abilites & don't just come along and say that!

HP Rocks or Twilight Rocks!

The whole point off this exercise is to get everyone thinking! 😆

We have a mixture of loyal readers some who like both and some like one each!

Don't compare the BOOKS compare the WRITERS as we are trying to find out the next JK Rowling as the darn media says!😡

I am very sorry if this offends anyone! Its just i am fed up! HP has transformed my life as a reader! JK Rowling is a living legend and there is NO way that she will be REPLACED! 😃

I dont want this topic to turn into a heated argument off any sort! So please just look at the facts that we we know and compare the writers and honstely tell me will HP be taken over by Twilight!?

Just want to mention that even though i liked Breaking Dawn it was okayish, NOT the best book i have read! The things that happened that book shocked the living daylights out off me! 😆

The reviews which have been published for the book have been mostly negative!

Breaking Dawn for me was just another reminder that Meyer is NOT the Next JK Rowling! 😃

Sam x

I won't compare the authors or the books because HP series is the only thing I have not read and have no wish to read or see in future coz Cedric died😭😆

I have read twilight saga thoroughly, loved everybit of it. I will not do the comparisions because I know writing books like HP/Twilight is not a piece of cake. the amount of hardwork and dedication given in by the authors is not imaginable👏 for people like me who never tried writing smth😆. So no comparisons from myside.
Good discussion Sam.👍🏼

I agree with you Sam. I just don't understand why everyone's comparing J.K. Rowling to Stephanie Meyers, or Harry Potter to Twilight. I think the reason is that they both are fantasy books, and Twilight's the only book/series to become popular after Harry Potter. But that is not a valid enought reason to compare something, because if you look deep into it, there are sooooo many differences between the two series. People who are romance freaks will obviously go for twilight, and people who are adventure/family/good and evil/magic freaks will obviously go for Harry Potter. My personal opinion is that people can relate more to Harry Potter (without the magic), because the series hits on friendship, love, school, enemies, and all of that sort of things that people usually experience every day. I mean, who doesn't have an enemy like Draco Malfoy, or someone who just ticks them off, and a conceited teacher like Lockhart, or a nagging but nice friend like Hermione Granger, and... you know what I mean!😆
I'm not trying to say one can't relate to Twilight, because lots of people out there probably disagree with me and can relate very much to Twilight, but I'm just saying that the writing style and character development, and the plot itself is sooooo different that there can be no comparisons. Just because Twilight is the only series to become popular among teens after Harry Potter doesn't mean that Stephanie Meyers is going to become the next J.K. Rowling. J.K. Rowling worked for far more than seven years on Harry Potter, and her dedication and love for her series shows in every word and sentence in her books. Stephanie Meyer's Twilight (First Book) came out in 2005, and it is almost 2009 and already there are four books out. Obviously Stephanie Meyers is an excellent authoress herself, as her series really are a hit, but it takes more dedication and patience to make another seires like Harry Potter. That's just my opinion though.
Seriously, I dont' think there should be any comparisons. Harry Potter was enchanting, a page turner, and Twilight is good also, but I just feel that Stephanie Meyers went a little too fast with her series, especially with Breaking Dawn, because a lot of people I know who are crazy about Twilight were disappointed in that book.
I'm just saying...J.K. Rowling was an excellent authoress👏, and Stephanie Meyers is really good herself👍🏼, but beyond that, how are they alike?🤔

I completely Agree with you Sam!

I love both HP and Twilight, but there is no way that Stephenie is the next JK Rowling. While JK Rowling figured every detail of the HP world, from the smallest things! Any question asked, she would answer striaght up, and her answers are well thought out, as if she had figured out everything.

Meyers is good! She is a great writer, but that does not mean she is the next JK Rowling, yes I love tiwlight, but there is a difference in her writing and JKR"s writing!

Both writers are good, both stories are good, but they are two different authors...

Sam, I love you for opening this topic up! All the comparison posts were getting on my nerves btw HP and Twilight!
I wont say much abt HP coz like Anuu & to borrow her words I have not read HP and never will coz Cedric died😆
Twilight and HP are excellent in both their ways and plots, and is it really necessary to compare both books? Its your own personal prefernce, so stick with it! Making posts and asking other members to compare and voice out which movie/book/authors' better; is really annoying and you know sometimes it might just lead to petty arguements.
Good discussion Sam and once again, Thanks!

Are you actually sad over the character of Cedric (from the book) dying, or his actor "dying" in the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie?⭐️

Thank you so much for opening this post Sam!
I totally agree with u! Like you..i have read both the HP books and the Twilight books and i am a huge fan of both..HP and Twilight ROCK! LOL!
But yhh..the comparing was getting on my nerves! Both books are based on fantasy..yhh..but they are both totally different, so are the writing styles and so are the authors! Although i love Meyer (apart from the fact coz i love the twilight series..another reason has to be coz i actually understand all the vocab used..im sorry but Rowling uses like such complex words..although they like make sense in the context..it makes me feel so dumb Hahaha), there's no way she is the next JK Rowling..the standards of writing are totally different!
Both Rowling and Meyer have awesomee books...and i don't think Meyer rushed her books coz i actually liked BD..and if she took any longer i would have died..LOOOL!..but yhh! Both have awesomeee storiess and awesomee characters that u can love and adore...but yhh..JK Rowling is a much more mature author..she like Sam says is a Legend..and Meyer still has to develop as an author and she like many more years to come and books to write! I myself am curious to see wot both Authors come up with next! Hehe!
But yh..i'll jus end saying both HP and Twilight ROCKS!

As a reader of both series, I can honestly say JKR is the better author, which isn't to say she's my favourite author (in contemporary novels, perhaps) or even that she's par excellence (because excellence in literature is defined by William Shakespeare, Emile Zola, Homer, and the likes in my opinion) but she's better than a lot of authors out there.
Characters: Rowling's characters have depth. They are 3D and possess a good hold of verisimilitude whereas Meyer's are one dimensional and have no real personality. Meyer's characters are blatant Mary Sues (Bella, Renesmee) or wish-fulfillment heroes (Edward, Carlisle). While Jacob is a refreshing change from this, one character isn't enough to excuse the plethora of Mary Sues/Gary Stus. In the interest of fairness, however, JKR hasn't fully been an exception to Mary-Sueism either. Ginevra Potter ne Weasley would be the only example of a Mary Sue in the Potter series. To give Meyer credit, however, she does have an interesting, if somewhat enviable, ability to create a character many can identify with although I'm still wondering what it is in Bella that people can relate to.
Diction/Syntax: Rowling tends to vary in her diction, from what I've noticed. As the books progressed, the writing became more complex. Meyer... the less said the better. Too much purple prose (scintillating arms bare, incandescent chest), repetition of a word and attempting to change said word's meaning (Isn't this full of chagrin?😛)... I should seriously stop before I start typing excerpts. Also, "!!!!!" and unnecessary punctuation in novels is a huge no-no. It reflects bad writing. Meyer tends to use anything she can - adjectives, adverbs, transition words, conjunctive adverbs, punctuation marks - to stretch a sentence.
Telling and not showing: This is a mistake Rowling made a few times - blink-and-miss situations, really - in her earlier books. She would tell but not show and what she showed contradicted what she told. In Rowling's defense, it was minor and hard to find without a careful reading. Meyer also has the tendency to tell {m}, but not show {m} and/or tell {m} but show {n} in large parts of her books which usually lead to messed up characterizations (ie. Bella).

Imagery: Rowling scores A on this. She really hits the nail on the head and creates vivid lucid images. Meyer does too. By the end of the childbirth scene in BD, I was extremely grossed out and that doesn't happen often. Meyer should focus more on grotesque imagery as she's good with it and let go of the purple prose she insists on putting in her books. Twilight would have been a lot more enjoyable for me if she crossed out all the purple prose.
Narrative POV: I have a major bias against first person narratives especially when they are rich with details that don't build character. First person narrative is ostensibly more "intimate" but Meyer does not use it effectively and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Similarly, although written in third person, the reader during the HP series is confined to Harry's view on everything. If this is intentional, a masterstroke on Rowling's part as it encourages reader to analyze each character, each event objectively (encouraging critical thinking) rather than how Harry describes them. If this is unintentional, then, Rowling neatly divides "good" and "evil" as 'If you aren't with us, you're against us' with no scope for a middle ground which doesn't do much for the book and reflects poorly of the protagonist.
Setting and significance: Rowling uses a number of settings throughout the books and their significance is described in ample detail (Shrieking Shack, anyone?). It makes sense and does not disrupt the flow of the story. In fact, it adds to the story (Godric's Hollow, for example). Conversely, Meyer does the exact opposite. Forks, Washington doesn't hold any particular significance other than to set the tone of moroseness (self-proclaimed, by the way) as it "rains a lot" but rain doesn't inherently indicate gloominess. Isle Esme is something the books could have done without as well. It holds no particular significance; instead, it emphasizes on the Cullen's financial status, which is supposedly a "disguise" to "blend in" with the humans.
Conclusion: Meyer is definitely not the next Rowling. She has a long way to go before she reaches that status, as demonstrated by the Midnight Sun fiasco, her writing calibre and "The Rob Effect" comment. The fangirl-esque comment "it's just fiction" also discredits Meyer as an author; that is equivalent of saying whatever a reader interprets from the books is not intentional. That's why I feel had Meyer spent more time on plot outline and the story as a whole (How could she not research about vampires?), she would have written a more enjoyable novel. All said and done, Rowling is on a different pedestal completely.

Why not? What's wrong with comparing the books? Both HP and Twilight share many motifs, themes and imagery.
Motif: "Good" vs. "Evil"
Themes:
Redemption: In HP, The Malfoys and Snape. In Twilight, the Volturi (although, poorly explored). Ethics: Pureblood Supremacy; Vampire Supremacy
  • Love: In HP, the love between extended family (HP,RW & HG), between mother/father-son etc. In Twilight, Bella and Edward's love.
Imagery/Diction: Usage of the term "silky" in reference to both Snape and Edward's voice.
Not to mention, parallels and contrasts can be always drawn between characters. Edward can be seen as a fan girl version of Snape, where his flaws are white-washed and all his actions are made out to be "romantic".
That's what I can think of from the top of my head. I'm sure if I revisited all the books, I could probably find some more comparative points. Anyhow, wouldn't it be awkward to compare the writers without comparing the books? After all, that's where your evidence, so to speak, stems from; ergo, you are comparing the books.
By the way, a very thought provoking topic ;)

It infuritaes me whenever I see people hailing Meyer as the next J.K Rowling. I adore J.K. Rowling's work. Not only did she create the massive HP phenomenon, but she gave way to an entire magical world. Her characters mature and develop through the series in ways that Stephanie Meyer hasn't yet achieved.
Meyer's writing seems almost amateurish to me, there are fanfictions out there about twilight which seem to be written in a better way than the books itself. Those who have read both HP and twilight with an open mind, without any bias would agree that some of Jo's subplots are stronger than Meyer's whole plot.
Jo poured her heart and soul out to write the HP books, it amazes me everytime when I see that she has planned out every small, almost insignificant detail, that is dedication! Meyer on the other hand says she does not all the details about all her charcters and quips" Someday, if it becomes necessary to a story, I'll comb through each character, look at his history and his present, and see which option makes the most sense." Twilight saga is officially over now and she still has not developed her chracters properly.
Can the simple, superficial world of Twilight really compare to the complex, beautifully-woven, intricate universe Rowling created for Harry Potter? Never according to me.I admit that twilight is a nice book but stephenie meyer's writing seems so amateurish when compared to jo's brilliant writing.
I just want to say that I'm glad I'm supporting something born from imagination and dedication, rather than something that utilizes aesthetic appeal to get readers.
P.S Great topic!
