TSMSPJ*ep.58*8.6.17: My Impression* our way of life..
People feel strongly about their routines and how they choose to exist, where they can practice their habits, behaviour they are accustomed to. People's lifestyles are based on choices they make. Many seek personal faith, philosophy or education to derive tips to good living. How best they can live life and make use of life around them.Today's episode, through the genre of entertainment media fiction, I feel carries some interesting messages revolving around the areas of tradition and morality. It also outlines examples of the practicality of religion to good practical living. How one's faith attempts to lends sense to particular rituals rather than dictate.
Kanak is a hard person to convince regards the tradition of touching her husband's feet. Maasi is rather dictatorial in her manner drumming the beats of tradition and morality into this act which is unacceptable to Kanak. Really the act of touching Uma's feet is to do with a wife conforming to the ideals of moral conduct set out in tradition.Massi also alludes to lifelong learning, and Uma being the fountain of knowledge, can disseminate that knowledge to Kanak. Looks like Kanak whether she wants it or not is the ideal pupil for the scholastic Uma Shankar to disperse his commands! in the guise of pearls. Once again Uma reminds Kanak of her duties as a wife by quoting the example of goddess Lakhsmi and Lord Vishnu whereby even the great goddess succumbs to submission before her husband.
Where faith is more plausible to accept, when it is shown to relate to both the body and the spirit. The flash back scene of Palomi washing Uma's feet at the door side. To me the act itself is a practical manifestation of sanitisation , that can take root in purification rituals inspired by faiths. In the flashback, Uma returns home which is his holy dwelling place. Great effort is made to keep it free from outdoor impurities. Hence to maintain its sanctity the ablution of the feet that tread the ground outside is necessitated. In Islam too before offering prayers, a Muslim follows the ritual of cleansing by practically washing off the dust from the exposed parties of the body to uphold purification. Similarly in Christianity, there is an exemplary instance where Christ cleanses with water, the feet of his disciplines.. thus practically washing off body impurities , but spiritually he epitomizes an act of humility and submission. This very act of humility and yielding is what Uma and his family require from Kanak, but she for the minute finds it unthinkable as there is no adoration, and love involved in the act of touching Uma's feet.
By sheer presence of mind she raises peoples hopes by moving towards Uma persona. But soon swoons.. in Uma's arms. The scene creates quite a din for her general welfare. The scene gives way to subtle romance. While laying her down on the bed, his kurta button gets caught symbolically in her mangalsutra. A sure auspicious omen for Uma ,not to lose faith in their marriage. Through her veil of chastity Kanak enjoys outdoing him from touching his feet. But then the lessons of morality have to be delivered to Kanak, and inadvertently its dear Palomi who simply wants to connect with Uma.. by silently telling him she's still around. Palomi becomes the person to supply the resources, the special oil to facilitate Kanak's learning. In fact Palomi extends Uma's plan that fouls Kanak's hoax! Maasi like a good elder of the house brings food platter for Kanak to cure her dizzy spell. It appears though to Kanak, that with her mistress mind she manages to put Uma in a situation where he has to show humility and service to his wife by reviving her by oiling the soles of her feet! Mind you, at times divine just can turn the tables even in practice to illustrate, that between man and wife it's not about winning or losing ,but agreed mutual harmony. Hence when Maasi brings in Kanak food.. her flesh tempts her to fulfil her need to eat. But Uma interjects and points out food will not revive Kanak from her stupor! But his act of tweaking the nerve points of her toes will! Hence with this act of practical healing faith makes Uma become almost even, with her odd and timely swoon! As by his pressure point tweaks Kanak jerks up into sitting position ,for all to behold!
Well he smiles.. not easy to outdo him, he knew he would crack down her hoax. Kanak retorts with a defiant smile, there's more to follow where this act came from. But little does Kanak realize, Uma is a hard task master as far as making her adhere to the rules and regulations of traditional morality is concerned, she needs further instruction in moral lessons. The tilak ceremony provides him the excuse he looks for.. a wife can only apply tilak to her husband after she touches her husband's feet to show reverence. Kanak does. Bow's to get to his feet only to make him feel the pinch of her disagreement to the act! Another rule is hurled at Kanak.. which finger to use to apply the tilak to Uma's forehead.. Maasi teaches her it has to be the ring finger as it connects to the heart and transfers love from wife to husband!
Starve the flesh to discipline the body and soul! One more time the practicality of faith is demonstrated in the scene where a starved Kanak goes in search of food in Uma's archaic kitchen and is spotted pottering around. Kanak one more time learns the routine of healthy eating habits and timely spacing of meals, that to me allows ample duration for food digestion!
Kanak is bound to see the practicality of the rules and regulations of this new life she finds herself. The girl flaps as she sees the quality of choice is being taken away from her. As such, she feels new strange systems and conventions are being enforced on her. The element of love , which is a long way coming.. is missing. For it is love that makes one perform many a marvellous feats.. if one's heart is in it.
Strangely enough at her paternal home Kanaks action of her runaway marriage is being badmouthed by Mayank's parents. Kanak's Bhabo has to bear the brunt of her misdeed.. Mayank's father tells Bhabo you failed to control your granddaughter!
At Uma's house too, Kanak too is being roped into control.. no wonder the girl rebels. Not many know the real trials and tribulations Kanak goes through..least of all Bhabo in whose name she carries her cross!
Overall it is another fine episode, profound with lots of food for thought garbed in witty shots, of tit for tat! one up man situations! but nevertheless cvs have done a good job, at showing, the feel of breakaway or join? Tradition, or the practical side of faith.. hamlet53 8.6.17
