TSMSPJ*ep.57*7.6.17: My Impression*In the wink of an eye!
A figure of speech.. that denotes something that happens in such haste that it almost appears improbable. For me today's episode is a flash and zap of a gambit of many noteworthy manoeuvres which the characters try out to further the storyline. Many a preconceived concepts are challenged and put up for questioning. The episode, progressively shows the existing dissimilarity between the two leads Kanak and Uma, thus whetting the appetites of viewers to learn more about their rather contrary interactions. Both characters speak some profound lines in the episode, that engage right away and act as an impetus either to the plot or sheds light on their characteristic traits. For starters, Uma almost goes along with the flow of the situation and challenges Kanak, she can be Sita or Gita both will be marked by the colour of his love. Kanak already senses the confidence of meeting her halfway husband. Only emotionally she is still a tad raw, and is largely her mind controls. One has to give her credit that she forewarns Uma that she too will dabble in colours. He has the choice to hinder her from falsifying her true colours, but his comment gives her the thumbs up for her double act!
Well if Uma mentions colour, than little does he realize that in the wink of an eye! This young girl will splash him with a riot of colours! he could never imagine in his life. She tells him brazenly, she will don the semblance of two feminine shades .. the chaste and the promiscuous! At her first wink at him ,Uma knows not how to handle her brisk flirty pass! How can he know? as this fragrance essence sprite is his first encounter with a woman in that sort of way! All his life he was surrounded with the maternal, sisterly sentiments towards the fairer sex. Palomi .. well she was his ward, nothing else. But this Kanak..she is different, not just attractive ,but one with a bounteous brain too; and intrepid, not afraid to take risks!
Where two colours orange and yellow stand apart.. they flow towards each other on the palette of marriage. Yet for now they stand un-mixed , bold and different from each other. Will it be love that will mix the orange and yellow to make the red?The passion of love. But for now only a bit of each's true colour is show to the other. Uma as he appears to all is the scholastic, savant, solid ,sombre man. Kanak on the other hand as we see from the episode in her true colours is.. humorous ,peppy, witty, fun loving, sparkling like buck's fizz! What her challenge is, apart from achieving her objective Bhabo's papers. Also on the side line she plans to show Uma Shankar the wild side of life too!
But there are some shades of his about which Kanak is oblivious!.. that he is omniscient! to! its funny when he points out rather graciously it's nothing like that, its like she forgets he is a doctor and as such apart from healing aliments, he is knowledgeable about medication too, hence he knows she's laced his glass of milk with sleep inducing pills! Uma never lets go of a chance to share with Kanak what he believes in , like when he comments on the purity of milk being a celebration a of many's hard work , and the miracle boon of nature for humans bestowed by the sacred animal the cow. Gently he reprimands her that she adulterated milks purity! Kanak of course spiked his glass of milk too keep the devil's advances at bay! Ban Uma the man from showing the true colours of a husband's prerogative. Well Kanak should have known that Uma would refer to the dignity of evil quoting the scriptures! He points out the fact, that if Sita was freed from Ravan's lanka.. it was Ramji's prowess, but that she remained pure even in captivity, is because the ten headed monster Ravan never crossed his limit of decency! Likewise Uma assures Kanak she is safe, will remain so, till the point he wins her love and trust! This may be a turning point for Kanak in terms of perhaps accepting , that maybe, even morally corrupt crooks have code of ethics. However this assurance is to do with preservation of her chastity. Yet when it comes to her Bhabo's shop. Kanak loathes! condemns this Ravan who robs vulnerable, gullible old ladies!! The colour of Uma's love begins to wash off...
She flaunts her false colours, yet keeps her dignity. Kanak shows Uma while he pours over the riddle of Sita and Gita? That she is one determined dame who makes no empty threats! She paints her colours! But one for all to see, and the other for his eyes only! Within the wink of her eye! Decked up as the chaste Sita the shy ,demure figure of the ideal bahu glides across the top floor veranda! Mystery veiled woman reaches the courtyard! and creates a pleasant stir! The cat appears to be belled! Uma is stunned with disbelief at the veiled Kanak! she dared and she has done it with such clout! One shocked bump from Uma into Kanak and like before, the yellow garland leaps up in the air! confirms marital bliss floats down and captures both their shoulders! All around see it as yet another auspicious sign that all went well between them last night!! Uma still asks her what is this? Kanak raises her veil a wee bit and says and for you my Lord!... she gives him a promiscuous wink! Poor man with a firm face is hard hit into silence! while Kanak enjoys every little bashful step she takes towards Maasi , to collect her blessings..
Credit from the family, of course goes to Uma for transforming the wild filly into a controlled compliant one! Palomi watches dumbfounded! What is happening? She saw otherwise? She thought she had renewed hope of winning back Uma's trust following last night's scenes between him and Kanak. Still Palomi tries to stick her oar in by talking about rules and regulations of the household being narrated to Kanak again. But Maasi puts her back in her place.. a menial! get back! to making the cooling milk drink! It's interesting that Palomi should think of adhering to rules and regulations. She thinks as one in bondage! Kanak though, is a new age mind..who takes up challenges of the brave new world! Kanak is a fighter! Fends for her self.. alongside abiding by civilized civic rules she also knows about her rights!
So far Kanak's spectacle of colours true or false seems to go by according to plan. But for the hitch that conjures up, that of touching her husband's feet every morning after ablution. The idea seems unthinkable to Kanak! touching Ravan's feet! To me in terms of the human physique , the human head is the highest point of the body and it houses the brain. The head is seen with reverence in comparison to one's feet.. which although carry the whole human frame, yet they are lowly in comparison to the head, as they touch the ground! To touch someone's feet shows, humility ,submission and reverence. Uma tries to reason with Kanak that after marriage. Her husband takes the place of a god in her life.. thus touching his feet is expected! Once again he gives a faith reference about deities, which devotees find difficult to disagree with, thus are pressured into complying to demands made on them.
For Kanak in my view touching Uma's feet would be a hypocritical act, as she can feign humility, submission ,even reverence, but she cannot feign loving Uma Shankar! so in this instance Kanak colours outside the lines! acts and thinks in a way that does not conform to regulations that may be seen to favour only one partner in a marriage. Uma uses faith references to favour the husband's place as elevated in comparison to his wife. She is seen to be in a servile, submissive state. Kanak is yet to share with him that true bond of marriage lies in the values, that both husband and wife should aspire for their bond to contain mutual trust, love and all time service to one another.. hamlet53 8.6.17
