Our scriptures say that it is a virtue to become father. But, for Devavrat, his father's happiness was also a great virtue.
He had to choose between his father's happiness and he himself becoming a father in future. Dharmsankat.
When Chitrangad died, then there was question of who was to become king. Chitrangad's brother Vichitravirya was not at all capable of becoming a good king. Allowing him to remain king was bad for people. Bhishm was the only perfect choice for king. But if he became king, then what about his oath? On one hand, there was Bhishm's oath.
