Remix culture - delighting or sickening??

This has been the latest topic in Kollywood and of course
controversies to have shot with regarding this issue. Remixing
songs: do they really happen to great treat for the present
generation or an annoying part for the music lovers who were
bound together with yesteryear melodies and got sickened
after hearing the remix of same songs.

Let's take a glimpse through the origin of remix era in Tamil
film industry…

It all started with Yuvan Shankar Raja when he added
additional beats to his father's yesteryear Pop song
'Aasai Nooru Vagai'. This song was done for
Vishnuvardhan's debut directorial 'Kurumbu'. Then,
came the remix star D.Imman who dominated with all
his extravaganzas of gimmicks in adding English raps
to the songs. However, the entire globe would agree
with the fact that AR Rahman, the music-techno-superstar
is the king of remix. Not just the songs, he has his
creativity laid on each and every tunes he renders music for.

His first one ' Thottal Poo Malarum' was out of blue
since it didn't carry the same old tune. But an enchanting
tune and mild beats picked the attention. Sooner
bloomed the market for remixes where each and every
music director in tinsel town started to show their works
of remix.

There was also some of the funny part where music
directors like Mani Sharma had no efforts put on remixing
the songs. Well, it was more evident with 'Aae Aattha
Aathoramma Vaariya' for Malaikottai. No changes
were made for the song other than adding sound beats.

Yuvan Shankar Raja and Vishnu Vardhan together
shored on a blockbuster remake 'Billa' where couple of
songs were remixed. "My Name is Billa" and
"Vaitthalaya Pottendi" were exactly the same in new
version. However, feedbacks were that the songs of
original version weren't overbeaten by Yuvan.

A.R.Rahman, the remix King came up with an astounding
score for Vijay's Azhagiya Tamizh Magan on 'Ponmagal
Vandhal'. The song was really an excellent piece of work
where the voices were superb and of course the music,
mild beats and rap relating to the main songs added more
colors to the tune.

So over here, we have something for our viewers to decide
who is the best music director churning out stupendous remixes?
Type in your favorite music directors, the remix songs they have
tuned and the reason why you like them. Is Remix culture -
delighting or sickening?

Sickening - my 2 cents!!!! It just spoils the original!! And remixing a melody ....boy it is an ear sore ( in line with eye sore!!!) I hold some special old melodies dear to my ears - I just hope no one touches them, butchers them and end up calling them remixed!!!!

urgh.. remixes just suck. big time. there's no originality at all. i mean are these composers so creatively dead that they would rather re-hash a old song with some additonal music & call it their own?

the worst remix i've ever heard definitely is 'engaeyum epothum' from Pollathavan. even SPB who was the original singer couldn't save this song from going to the dogs. "sex illa kathal thappu?".. erghh.. i give up.

one more thing, if i may add, tamil composers should stop adding rap into their songs. it just doesn't freaking fit in. take the 'thanana thanane' song from Kuruvi. it could have been a MUCH MUCH better song if mr B and his croonies weren't interfering in the middle with their raps. one more example would be the 'ennadi muniyamma' song from Vaathiyaar. if Blaaze hadn't been disrupting the song with his lame raps, that song would have been much better too,

it's not only our composers who lack originality. it's the artistes as well. let me just say that kollywood should stop butchering songs by remixing them or adding silly rap into them.

In my opinion Remix is another name for screwing up a perfectly nice song. I just hate it when a nice melodious song gets distorted with RAPs and irrelevent beats!!

No one has a right to modify and screw up an original creation..PERIOD!!!

Note to music directors - If you do that guys then you have no head/ talent for music.. so pack your bags and leave!!! 😡

First of all, I don't agree with this writer who says ARR is the master of remixes. ARR never remixed old songs (until lately) - his remixes are of styles and different music. It seems that he steadfastly refused to remix old songs until the producer begged him to do so. That is why ARR remains my favourite musci director - he mixes styles and tones that are refreshing and unique. He does not revamp old songs.

As to whether remixed songs are delightful or sickening, I am in two minds about it. At first I hated it, but now I quite like it. Unlike Jiggs 😉 I love Engeyum Epothum...it is very upbeat and it makes me want to dance. I have it as my ringing tone and even my non-Tamil friends think it is funky.

Having said that, I agree with suram. No originality and in fact it is dishonest. What I hate more is that now they are using thevarams and bhakthi songs.

Well, looks like everyone is against remix. Guys, this is just my opinion. No offense yar... but i really enjoy remix. Maybe its because im so used on fast beat songs, i actually love when old songs are remix. And my most fav was Enggeyum Eppodum. I have been humming the song often, i still do 😉. Another remix song i enjoyed is Yennadi Muniamma.. 😉 But, im totally against rap. Example as given by jings, the thannae thannae song. The rap just did not suit in there 😳 And as Karthi has said ARR mixes styles and tones that are refreshing and unique. He does not revamp old songs... i'm fan of him too 😉

Just my opinion only. No offense naa 😳

Nets, no offence taken. If you read my post, I love EE too - I thought it was different and unique. I like Ennadi Muniamma too - so I am not as rabidly opposed to remixes as I once was. 😳

Oh, it IS sickening!!!! Absolutely! The rap part of the remixes is the unbearable part of them.

Leena, I agree with you. I liked the picturisation of Engeyum Eppothum, and the song excluding Yogi B's rap . Well, wihtout the rap part, it's the original song 😆

Ponmagal Vandhan.....'shes a diamond girl, diamond diamond'...God, it got onto my nerves then.

My name is Billa is an exception, I feel. For some reason, tht sogn began to grow on to me.
