Bollywood actors meet PM, donate Rs 1.15 crore

NEW DELHI, (UNI)

Hindi film actors Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee and director Karan Johar today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and donated Rs 1.15 crore to tsunami relief.

They also announced plans to adopt a Tamil Nadu village hit by the December 26 disaster.

Several Bollywood celebrities have already opened their wallets in the aid effort for tsunami survivors.

Aishwarya Rai has donated Rs 500,000 with director Subhash Ghai pledging Rs 25 lakh for the relief and Vivek Oberoi adopting a tsunami-hit village.

Actor Rahul Bose was reportedly in Andaman and Nicobar with plans to raise money for the victims of the quake-driven monster waves.

Sanjay Dutt is also planning a fundraiser for tsunami aid.

''I think all should stand together and help the tsunami victims... It is difficult to even comprehend the kind of pain those people have gone through,'' Rani Mukherjee told reporters at the 7-Race Course residence of the Prime Minister here after presenting a cheque for Rs 1.15 crore for the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Shah Rukh Khan also appealed for public contributions to the massive aid effort. ''India requires no foreign help as its one-billion plus population can sufficiently contribute to relief. Why should we need anybody else's help?''

The film stars, however, ruled out any visit to the devastated coastline in the near future, saying such a trip could hamper the ongoing relief.

Samajwadi Party MP Rajiv Shukla, who also met the Prime Minister along with Khan, Mukherjee and Johar, said Dr Singh had told them that the post-tsunami situation was ''really worrisome''.
