Anyone can bask in the glow of success; the challenge lies in accepting defeat gracefully. With a bawling Rakhi Sawant storming out of reality show, Nach Baliye 3, LiFE@WORK tells you what makes you a loser and what doesn't
When Rakhi Sawant doesn't win, she storms out. When Indian bowler, Shreesanth doesn't get a wicket, he turns foul mouth. And then there's SRK who doesn't believe in defeat. Is losing overrated?
Coming from a generation where people will kill each other for success, it would only be fair to say we all are part of a success-hungry race. Nobody wants to lose. But how you express this fear, is what differentiates one loser from another.
Stay calm and composed at all times, because a fragile and temperamental competitor is the easiest to beat. Even when you do feel a tad incompetent, stay poised and confident, and slowly you will start feeling like a winner, even when you lose.
Defeat is a steppingstone to success, say working professionals
Sandhya Sadananda, Manager- Brand PR for a FMCG company
It was very immature of Rakhi to react like the way she did. In life, you win some, you lose some, and when you do win someday, would you want the losers then to react in a similar fashion? You breed negativity with such an attitude.
Abhishek Raina, Marketing head for Fame Cinemas
Rakhi should have stayed calm and taken defeat in her stride; she would get another chance to prove herself. Defeat is just another stepping stone to success. If you don't learn from your losses, your victories are pointless.
The one's who were in Rakhi's place
Sandhya Mridul, Actor/Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 2 finalist
Everybody reacts to defeat and victory differently; each to their own. Since I consider myself a performer, and not a politician who performs for votes, I never felt like I lost; I got immense praise from the audience and judges. I am very optimistic and I don't lose hope.
Tanaaz Irani, Actor/Nach Baliye semi-finalist
When you take part in a competition, you are automatically open to judgment. A reaction like Rakhi's takes place when you have already assessed yourself as a winner, that's why it is not easy to accept defeat. You must follow a certain decorum while exhibiting your emotions.
Why Rakhi is a sore loser
Reality show participants react:
Kashmera Shah, Actor/Nach Baliye 3 participant
Rakhi showed her true colours. Despite saying how she is a very fair person and whatever happens is "God's marzi", she did the exact opposite. It's a shame to create drama and steal the limelight away from the winners. It's a sign of being over-confident.
Mir Ranjan Negi, Indian Hockey Team coach/Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 2 participant
As a sportsman, I have been trained to accept defeat from day one. Though my elimination caught me off-guard, I made sure my face didn't give it away. I was hurt, but I accepted it without losing my cool, and Rakhi should have done the same.
Anupama Verma, Model/Big Boss participant
It was very wrong of Rakhi to react that way on the show, simply because she has come a long way over the past year and accepting this defeat gracefully would have earned her more love from the public. Rakhi should have kept in mind that it is a game of chance after all.
"Winning and losing is all part of the game. You must have the right sportsman spirit"
- Actor Salman Khan while requesting Rakhi-Abhishek to come back on stage and accept defeat gracefully. (The couple had left the show by then)
Follow these 4 golden rules says Anita Shantaram, Director, Dr PN Singh Centre for HRD:
Develop quality of resilience: Don't take it like a setback, and don't externalise the issue. Instead, try to strive ahead with renewed energy.
consider quitting: If you think someone has climbed up the ladder due to personal biases, consider quitting.
Stay grounded: Often, inflated self-assessment can leave you feeling more dejected about a defeat. Ask yourself if you really deserved it or not?
Control your emotions: This is the toughest to do, but consciously training yourself helps. Emoting and reacting is fine, but keep it within limits.
