PART 19:
WEDDING DAY:
The Malhotra sister weddings were of course the talk of the town. A large shamiana had been erected behind the Malhotra house to accommodate all the guests and well wishers. The weddings were held in the day time and were conducted with full Punjabi customs and traditions.
Both brides looked ethereal on that auspicious day.
Mahi wore a pink and blue lehnga, while Soni wore a red and gold one. Their grooms looked equally savvy in their cream and gold sherwani (Shabd) and maroon sherwani (Jeet).
After the baraats were received at the gate by Mouni and Brij, the two grooms were led to the 'jai mala' area. Both men stood with their garlands, anxiously waiting for their brides. At last, the two gorgeous women were escorted into the shamiana by their older sister, Rajji.
Neither Shabd, nor Jeet were aware of what their brides would be wearing that day. The women had decided to tease the men and had their faces covered with their ghunghats.
"Arre Jeetā¦..kaun si dulhan kis ki hai yaar?" An edgy Shabd asked nervously, "teri waali kaun sa rang pehne huye hai?"
"Pata nahin Shabdā¦..mujhey Soni ne kuch bataaya nahinā¦.waise Soni thodi lambi hai Mahi seā¦.lekinā¦lekin aaj tho dono ek height ki hi lag rahi hain," Jeet answered nervously.
The women climbed the two steps to the jai mala stage and stood away from the men.
"Jijuā¦.ab aap dono ko guess karna padhega ki kiski dulhan kaun hai?" Prince stood between his sisters. Rajji joined them too, "haan bhai Shabd aur Jeetā¦.aaj aapke pyaar ka imtihaan haiā¦.dekhein kaun apni dulhan ko door se hi pehchaan sakta haiā¦..jo pehle pehchaan legaā¦.wo jai maala pehle karega!'
The guests and family members chuckled at the little prank being orchestrated by the bride's siblings.
"Saale saheb," Shabd coughed and whispered into Prince's ears, "iska kitna loge? Aaj mere paas bahut paise hainā¦.joota churaayee ka paisa abhi se le loā¦aur bata do Mahi kaun si haiā¦laal ya ghulabi?"
"Rajji didiā¦dekho Shabd jiju kitne beimaan hainā¦..mujhey rishwat de rahe hain!" Prince complained loudly.
"Arre Shabd sahebā¦..yeh tho cheating huyi naā¦..chaliye main pehle pehchaanta hoon," Jeet came forward and stared at the two ghunghat clad women with garlands in their hands.
"Ek chance hi milega Jeet babu!" Rajji teased him.
"Matlab?' a petrified Jeet swallowed hard.
"Matlab yeh ki agar aapne galat ladki ko chuna tho usee se shaadi karni padhegi," Rajji giggled.
"Arre arreā¦aisa laise ho sakta?" Shabd came forward, "main sirf Mahi se hi shaadi karoonga!"
Mahi and Soni tried their best to suppress their laughter and were amused by their groom's impatience.
"Sorry Shabd jijuā¦..aaj aapke pyaar ka imtihaan haiā¦..Majnu tho Laila ki khushboo se hi pehchaan jaata tha ki wo aas paas hai."
"Theek hai tho mujhey dono ko paas se soonghne do," a mischievous Shabd got closer to the women.
Mahi and Soni's hearts were pounding as Shabd came closer. Soni prayed, "hey vaahe guruā¦..Shabd jiju mujhey na chun leinā¦..aaj hum dono ne ek hi perfume bhi laga rakha hai!"
Mahi shut her eyes as she felt Shabd's presence and cursed her sister, "Soni ki bachchiā¦tujhey aaj hi mera perfume lagaana tha? Kahin Shabd usey na chun leinā¦..main tho barbaad ho jaaoongiā¦..yeh Rajji didi ne kaisi shart lagaa di hai? Chaloā¦waise mazaa tho aa raha hai in aadmiyon ko buddhu banaane mein."
Jeet came forward too. The two men circled the women and tried to identify their own bride. They looked at each other with confused expressions- except for the color of the lehnga, everything was identical- their heights, their frames, their fragranceā¦..
Shabd knew there was one way, he could identify Mahi. He cleared his throat and stuck his head between the two women, "Mahiā¦..wo kal raat waala daag tumhare chehre se hataa ya nahin?"
Mahi blushed inside her ghunghat as she recalled their kiss in her room; she tensed up at his statement but remained silent. Shabd was hoping for some visible reaction but unfortunately, Mahi concealed it well.
"Daag?" Rajji asked but the smiled, "NO questions allowed jiju!"
'SUHANI! MERI JAAN!" Shabd suddenly yelled to everyone's shock, "KAHAN THI TUM? AA JAO MANDAP MEIN CHALTE HAINā¦..MAHI BAHUT NAKHRE DIKHA RAHI HAI!"
Mahi was mortified; she turned red with anger and yelled back, "FITTEH MOOH TERA SUHANI!" and pulled her ghunghat away.
Shabd's plan had worked! There was Mahi in her full form; ghunghat off her face- red as a beetroot.
The guests and family members were shocked initially but when they saw the victorious grin of Shabd's face, everyone relaxed and cheered for him, "CHAK DE PHATTE PUTTAR!" someone yelled.
Mahi was embarrassed at what she had just blurted out inadvertently and hid herself in her ghunghat again.
"Hip hip hurray for Shabd bhaiyya!" Kamya clapped and hugged Mahi from behind, "iska matla mera bhai pehle jai maala karega!"
Rajji helped Mahi step forward as Shabd placed the garland around Mahi's neck. The crowd cheered for them and asked Mahi to follow suit. Shabd played hard and stood tall so Mahi could not reach him.
"Jijuā¦.ab tho Mahi ko na sataaiye," Rajji exclaimed as Shabd played hardball.
Veer came forward and was about to lift Mahi in his arms so she could place the jaimaala around Shabd, but Shabd swiftly intervened and lifted Mahi in his own arms to everyone's surprise.
Mahi yelled for help as she was lifted in the air by her tall and handsome groom. They were face to face now as he peeked under her ghunghat, "zaraa chaeck kar raha thaā¦.kahin dulhan badal na gayi ho," he chuckled as Mahi garlanded his neck shyly.
"Wah wahā¦.kya mard da puttar hai apna Shabd!" Yash Sareen marveled at his son's gallantry, "yaad hai Savitriā¦..hamari shaadi huyi thi tho main bhi aise hi," he paused as he looked at his ex wife, but to his surprise, he saw her blushing just like a new bride instead of her usual scornful looks. Yash smiled and placed his arm around her, "kaho tho ek jaimaala aur mangwaa loonā¦..lage haath ek shaadi aur ho jaaye."
"Chaliye bhiā¦.aapki puraani aadat wapas aa rahi hain lagta," Savitri smiled.
"Kuch din business naam ke safe mein bandh thi meri aadateinā¦..par aaj lagta hai bahar aana chaahti hainā¦.aur hamesha hamesha ke liye," he squeezed her shoulder and to his surprise she did not protest either.
The two handsome couples completed the rituals of the wedding after the playful jai maala. After the pheras and kanyaadan, they received the blessings from all the elders. Mahi and Soni's maang glowed with the sindoor placed by their respective grooms. Their mangal sutras around their necks were the pure and eternal symbol of their sacred alliance with their husbands.
The couples were then escorted to the luncheon tables. Both couples were served food in one plate each.
Soni and Jeet teased and fed each other from their plate as the photographers captured those endearing moments.
Mahi sat shyly and let Shabd dig into the plate.
"Kya huaā¦tum nahin khaaogi kya?" he asked softly.
"Bhookh nahin hai," she replied shyly.
"Tumhein bhookh nahin hai?" he was surprised, "tum tho marne se pehle bhi khaali pait nahin rehna chaahtiā¦aaj kya hua?"
"Aaj zinda huyi hoonā¦..marein hamare dushman!" she rested her head gently on his shoulder.
"Tho zinda rehne ke liye khaana bhi tho zaroori hai," he squeezed her hand under the table.
"Aapka pyaar hi kaafi hai," she squeezed his hand back.
"Mar jaawaan Mahiā¦..lagta hai tumhein kisi aur cheez ki bhookh hai abhiā¦kaho tho andar chalein?' he asked naughtily.
"Shabd!" she glared at him, "mera matlab wo nahin tha!"
"Tho kya tha?" he asked ignorantly.
"mera matlab tha ki aaj mera pait khushi se hi bhar gaya hai,' She leaned on him.
"Shaadi ke baad khaana banaaogi na?' he asked
"Kyun? Aisa kyun poonch rahe hain?" she pulled away and stared at him in confusion.
"Kahin sirf pyaar vyaar se hi tho pait nahin bhar dogi har shaam?" he chided with her.
"Theek haiā¦aapko aisi baatein pasand nahin hainā¦.tho nahin karoongi," she pulled her hand away from his.
"Arre..arre main tho mazaak kar raha tha Mahi," he grabbed her hand again and was about to bring it close to his lips when they saw a cheerful Veer walking towards them.
Veer walked to their table and placed his arms on their shoulders from behind, "arre kya baat haiā¦.yahan khaana kumā¦baatein zyaada ho rahi hain."
"Haan bhai Veer sahebā¦ā¦soch raha hoon jitni baatein karni hainā¦abhi kar loonā¦..ek baar poori tarah shaadi shuda ho jaaoonga tho baat karne ka mauka miley ya nahin miley?" Shabd chuckled and gave a high five to Veer.
"Yeh tho sahi kaha aapne Shabdā¦..Mahi jaisi ladki tho achhe achhon ki bolti bandh kar deti haiā¦..tho aap tho inke pati hainā¦.good luck to youā¦and my sympathies with you," Veer laughed back. Mahi gave a dirty look to Veer, "jijuā¦..Rajji didi se aapki shikaayat lagaa doongi!"
"Kya keh rahe hain yeh mere baare mein?" Rajji walked to their table, "zaroor hum behno ka mazaak udhaa rahe honge."
"Nahin nahin meri jaan," Veer walked towards Rajji and placed his arm around her, "bhalaa itni kis mard mein himmat hai jo aap jaisi behno ka mazaak bhi udhaa sakein? Humein pagal kuttey na kaat rakha hai kya?"
"Chhodo bhi!" Rajji pulled away and grabbed Mahi's wrist, "chal Mahiā¦..in aadmiyon se door chalte hainā¦..yeh kisi kaam ke nahin hain!"
"Arre arre Rajji didiā¦aisa ghazab na kariye," Shabd pleaded with folded hands, "aap soniyon ke nakhre sar aankhon parā¦..meri dulhan ko mujhse door mat le jaaiye."
"Pehle in aadmiyon ko hum sab ke liye ek gaana gaana hoga phir!" Rajji grinned and pulled Soni up from the neighboring table.
"Gaana?" Veer and Shabd stared at each other in horror.
"Shabd bhaiyyaā¦..Veer bhaiyyaā¦tussi fikar na karoā¦..twaada Jeet kis din kaam aayega jee?" Jeet grinned and slapped their backs.
The three men folded their arms and stood in front of their wives. Brij, Mouni, Yash and Savitri joined the three couples in this wonderful dance and song sequenceā¦ā¦
