Images: Madhuri's comeback movie

With politicians wanting to demolish the theatre -- Ajanta is built on a rather peachy plot of real estate -- Dia realises a revival can't be merely born out of spirit, and decides to stage a theatre production.
A play starring the residents of Shamli. A great idea, but is there enough material to work with?

Konkona Sen Sharma plays Anokhi, a mercurial and profane young girl with a constantly runny nose. She'd be great on stage, except she can't sing, or dance.

Tthen there's Mohan Sharma, played by Ranvir Shorey. Nursing heartbreak ever since Dia left Shamli, the cafe owner feels helpless again with the lady's comeback. Now he does want to help Dia, but wonders if staying too close to her is the smartest idea.

The rest of the gang isn't exactly stage-star material either: Vinay Pathak plays Mr Chojar, a sycophantic government official. Akhilendra Mishra plays Choudhary Om Singh, a local ex-MLA wanting to piggyback onto Dia's popularity. Jugal Hansraj is Sanjeev Mehta, an accountant without a clue about dancing. And Yashpal Sharma plays Mohan's friend and town cop SHO Singh, trying hard to save his buddy from heartbreak.

And so, with this motley crew of unusual suspects, Dia has to put together a show and save Ajanta Theatre, and, in a way, the town of Shamli itself.
Can she handle it? Well, the she here is Madhuri Dixit, so nothing is ever out of reach.

Aaja Nachle releases November 30.

Madhuri back with Aaja Nachle
Uday JhalaWednesday, November 14, 2007: (Mumbai):
The whole nation has been missing Madhuri Dixit for too long but now that she is back we are sure that she is going to be back with a bang.Madhuri arrived in Mumbai late on Tuesday night looking as stunning as ever and NDTV caught up with the dancing queen at the airport.NDTV: Are you excited about Aaja Nach Le? It is a big comeback for you?Madhuri: I am excited about Aaja Nach Le, I haven't seen the movie as yet but I want to see it. This is what we had planned that we will start the publicity 15 days before the movie's release. : With such a big gap are there any nerves about the movie?Madhuri: Nothing like that, every time your film releases there are lots of nerves and there are butterflies in your tummy. It is always unpredictable because you don't know what is going to happen.NDTV: There are reports here suggesting that you have seen the initial promos of the film and you have not appreciated the film. While some say that you have seen the film and not liked it, would you like to clarify that?Madhuri: These are just rumours. I haven't seen the movie yet and now that I am back I am going to see it. I took on this project because I felt that it had something for me and also because I had liked it and I was also excited about it. So, I am still excited and I hope that the people like the movie.Madhuri: What did your family think of the film?NDTV: My kids loved the song Aaja Nach Le, they have enjoyed the film and now that they see and recognise me on the screen. So they are excited and I am excited too.

Album Review
-Melodies of rustic flavour
By Aparajita Ghosh

The melodies of 'Aaja Nachle' conjure up bucolic images of an Indian countryside. The flavour of music by Salim-Sulaiman is strictly rustic. The emphasis is on Indian instruments like flute, sitar, harmonium, sarangi, ghungroo and dholki, but there is also a generous sprinkling of western sounds and beats.

Title song "Aaja Nachle" opens with a catchy melody on Ektaara (single string instrument). Salim-Sulaiman have given a very groovy beat to this dance number. Sunidhi Chauhan, singing for Madhuri, renders the song in controlled and restrained way. Piyush Mishra's words have a rural appeal.

The song's reprise version has high tempo, heavy beats, and techno feel. But it is not a patch on the original.

"Ishq Hua" is an utterly forgettable romantic track with a mellow mix of Indian and western styles of music. The only thing good about this slow-paced song is Sonu Nigam's singing. Shreya Ghoshal's voice sounds a tad high-pitched. Jaideep Sahni's lyrics are plain ordinary.

"Show Me Your Jalwa" by Richa Sharma and Kailash Kher is the best track in the album. The English title of this song can be misleading. For the song itself is full of rustic feel with beats of dholki, ghungroo and tabla. Richa Sharma is in her elements in this track. Her voice modulation captures the fun flavour of the song. Kailash Kher complements her and sings his part with gusto. Jaideep Sahni's lyrics are very eclectic and well rhymed.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan jars your senses with his highly impressive singing in "O Re Piya", a melancholic romantic song with the flavour of a qawwali. The song begins with a haunting melody on flute and keeps flitting between western beats and dholki. Salim-Sulaiman use a number of Indian instruments with western beats in this track, but the music doesn't overpower the vocals. "O Re Piya" has a lilting melody, it has charged up beats of qawwali, and it also has orchestration in the end. But it is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan who towers above the music in this track.

"Soniye Mil Ja" celebrates the arrival of youth. The song has Madhuri Dixit rendering a few lines before Sukhwinder Singh takes over and lifts the song to a new level. However, what makes "Soniye Mil Ja" a passable track is lack of a catchy melody. The music in the song is too loud and singing by Sukhwinder and Sunidhi Chauhan is pretty average. Thankfully, the song is just over three-and-a-half minutes long.

"Is Pal" is like a weepy romantic track with good tabla accompaniment in the background. Not a song to make an impact in the first hearing, "Is Pal" once again has Sonu Nigam at his best. Shreya Ghoshal gives him good company.

"Koi Patthar Se Na Maare" is a dramatic song with poetic lyrics by Piyush Mishra but an average melody by Salim-Sulaiman. The music duo keeps the music minimal in this track but lay heavy emphasis on drums and vocals. The female singers – Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal – do a commendable job, while Sonu Nigam gets to chip in a few lines at the end.

Newcomer Sonia Saigal sounds like Madonna in "Dance With Me", which has a very disco feel with saxophone accompaniment in the background. What is remarkable is that after composing melodies entrenched in rustic flavour, Salim-Sulaiman show another side of theirs with this ultra-western number. A pretty hummable track.

All in all, the music of Aaja Nachle is no great shakes. But it has a few songs that stay with you.

Rating: **1/2
