very good article on carnatic music and Hindustani music,maya..was abt to post something similar..but u beat me to it!!
As u've rightly pointed out,the styles employed by carnatic and hindustani is different. The ragas are the same. They are sung differently. For eg,the raag yaman of Hindustani classical is called 'kalyani in carnatic music. The swar for both ragas are the same.In carnatic music kalyani is

Arohana: s re ga ma pa dha ni s

Avarohana: s ni dha pa ma ga re s

In yaman
the arohana is : ni re ga ma pa dha ni sa
avarohana is : sa ni dha pa ma ga re sa

On close observation, one wil realise that the avorohana is the same for both and both ragas have the same swar(s re ga ma pa dha ni s),but in yaman the aroha starts with ni ri ga ma,in kalyani it starts with s ri ga ma...so the execution style is different... the basic ragas are the same.Bhairav from Hindustani is same as mayamalavagowle and Bhup from Hindustani is the same as Mohanam in carnatic.
so essentially they are the same.

Thanks Maya and RockNRoll.. Nice articles.. 👏

And RockNRoll thanks for the list.. Yes, as you said there are many more songs which are same like

Raat Kali ek khwab mein aayi - I have heard the tamil version, but not sure of the lyrics..

Sur Mai akhiyon mein - kanne kalaimane

All songs of Doli Sajake Rakhna have been copied to a movie called Jodi.. The interesting part in this is Doli Sajake rakhna is a remake of tamil movie Kadaluku Mariyadai and the songs of DSR were copied to a movie called Jodi.. 😆

Ofcourse who can forget the hit songs of Saathiya (Tamil Version - Alaipayudey)

Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein is again taken from Minnale..

Also sapnay (Kajol, PrabhuDeva).. Tamil version - sorry dont remember 😕

And many Jeetendra movies are usually remake of Tamil movies.. Infact Amol Palekar's Golmaal is a remake of Rajini's movie.. And some songs are also the same..

I can go on and on listing the songs that are similar in both Hindi and Tamil movies..

There are also singers from North coming into south like Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghosal.. They both have made a mark in Tamil movies and Shreya's accent is just too good and I always appreciate her for singing with such good accent, but that is not the case with Udit Narayan.. I dont know for what reason MDs are so interested in bringing him in every other song 😕

Here is a song from 7G Rainbow Colony sung by Shreya.. One of the beautiful song 👏

Now if you want to see the difference between North and South Indian music - I dont find much difference in the old songs.. They were almost of the same genre.. But yes these days Tamil movie songs are becoming more of beats and certain lyrics that you cannot even tolerate 🤢 I bet its worst than Hindi I think these both music go hand in hand with few inputs from North in South music and South into North.. All that matters is music.. Even if you dont understand the wordings, just enjoy the music 😉

In movies esply priyadarsan movies....he just do copy of all malayalam hits,Now aamir doing tamil hit 'gajani' remake, salman doing 'pokiri' remake, SRK plan to do with Sankar.....and lots of telegu/tamil hit music also copied into hindi....I think Hindi songs now a days loosing their own identity n creativity...copy from sufi tunes,Arab tunes its not a good sign. 😳

Music is always evolving and it is alright to experiment, test and apply what is good and useful as far as modern music is concerned. But for most old classical songs and the perfection in delivery, they should be preserved and improved upon but not compromised or diluted.😉

Just a small correction Anu.

Thillu Mullu is a remake of Gol Maal and not the other way around (you would wonder why K. Balachander would remake a Hindi movie?, but that's what happend).

Also, both these movies had some great (different) songs.

Aaane wala Pal (Gol Maal)
Raagangal pathinaru (Thillu Mullu)

Some small corretions,Anu.Movies like sapnay(A.R.Rehman) ,Doli sajake rakhna(Rehman),Sadma(Illayaraja) and Rehna hai tere dil mein(Harris jeyaraj),Saathiya(Rehman) had the same MDs in tamil and Hindi. So I wldn't really classify this as copying. The MDs used their tunes in Tamil and Hindi. At least it was their own tunes.
But if Raat kali was used in Tamil,it was probably copied coz R.D. has composed for very few movies in Tamil.
And u r right, nowadays tamil has such nonsnese lyrics that ost of the songs are a pain to the ear.Hindi isn't great either, but is probably a li'l better
And Shreya souns gr8 in Tamil. She has certainly got the accent very well. 👏 .Udit and even sadhna sargam have sung many songs in Tamil, but they haven't got the accent. In fact,I feel Udit is purposely being asked to pronounce songs in a specific way since this "modern distorted" version of Tamil appeals to youngsters....after his "eswara" which he pronounced as 'iswara'( 😆 ) became a hit,he has been singing songs with the same pronunciation

PS:thanks for the song from Rainbow colony..gr8 one 😊

^^ Yes I agree.. They were the same MDs.. But I am here just trying to put the view that music composed in South have been accepted in North and vice versa.. Just because this thread is a comparison between the music in North and South, I wanted to put forth the point that there is not much difference 😳
