Quality V Quantity Singing

There is misconception in the minds of audiences that "More you sing, the performance is better". If You sing more Aalaps or Harqats, it doesn't imply you are capturing the audiences unless the voice has tremendous strength and depth. If your voice is not "Dumdar" enough then thousands of 'aalaps and harqats' go down the drain with no impact. This is actually Quantity singing.

In case of Quality Singing, one has to concentrate on composition, lyrics, expression, emotion, breath control, and the classical touch. In this scenario it is advisable to do full justice to the presentation in 3 mins song by mixing and balancing the blends of above in the right manner. It is always suggested that take only two harqats but do proper justice to it.

One has to really work hard to get the appropriate "WAZAN" in the voice to make the impact felt.

In yesterdays episode, Amanat and Aneek did quantity singing. They really need to work hard on doing the Riyaz in gaining the depth for their voice. "Halka fulka gana", "soft soft gana" doesn't help in long run at all. At times their songs were floating around like "Kati Patang".

Raja and Poonam did Quality Singing. They were crisp, precise, knew how much to present, what to present and When to present. Though Poonam was out of sur in "Kuhu Kuhu" the strong voice did help to create the impact.

I am sure fans may not like this thread, cuz there is a general tendency of people that they go GaGa over the Quantity singing. And normally react "Woow he sang classical so well". The classical touch has to be so subtle that it should be felt and not enforced. Hope I have made myself clear, with no offence to anyone.

Sorry but disagree with you.. Amanat did a great job yesterday and he was the best.. And regarding Raja, his low notes were not right.. His voice is not the one to suite semi-classical songs.. He was not good in Jhanak Jhanak.. He could have done it lot better and even Jagjit Singh said this to him and he was not in sur at some places which was also pointed out by Pandit Jasraj and JS.. Just because if someone sings with energy and emotion, they cannot be called as best singers.. A singer must be technically perfect along with emotion and energy they put in the songs..

Same thing happens with Raja.. As he sings with lot of energy and emotion, his technical aspects becomes unnoticed.. Yes, Amanat and Aneek may not have that powerful voice as Raja and Poonam - but they are technically perfect and being a musical lover, I enjoyed their performance.. The alaap Aneek sang was truly enjoyable and Amanat was best in both the songs with him getting the credit from Pandit Jasraj and JS that he is number 1.. 👏 👏

I agree with Anu.

I find this post quite biased. Amanat was super yesterday and i dont think anyone was even close.

But since you are praising Raja so much, I'd just like to mention that Raja's low notes do not impress, he needs to work on that. He was good, but i believe Amanat had quality in quantity.

Without going into any examples, I think you are very right that making a simple song complicated takes away the beauty of the song.

even the accomplished singers will not claim thmeselves to be technically perfect- Pt. Jasraj said- even we go out of sur some times......

Aneek's ghazal was not very impressive but it was good. I would rather say his voice is not suitable for Ghazal!Regarding Jhanak Jhank to say that is was not good is far-fetched...Pt.Jasraj appreciated it a lot and also pointed out intricate alaaps he took ...

And I agree with the point raised by the topic starter.Amanat was awesome in both the performances but I liked his classical song more.

I agree with the basic idea of the post. The classical elements should be subtle. ID had modified the composition for Amanat to make it more demanding. But that was idea of the classical round - to showcase the classical prowess.

However, Raja's fans don't have to be defensive about his yesterday's performance. IMHO, Raja's first ghazal was top-notch - right there at the very top along with the other best performances in the show. He dared to add his own elements Ghulam Ali's composition in front of the two musical greats and got praise from Pt. Jasraj for it. This is what makes Raja, the Raja. His second performance was also top class. It was a very difficult song, perhaps the most difficult of the evening. Raja's own expressions suggested that it was taking a lot of him. Jagjit Singh's comments were relative to Raja's own standards.

Amanat was the best of the lot yesterday. It was his day. It's okay to concede it. Raja was the second best. Aneek was technically perfect but his voice is thin. Some say that he is only 18 and the voice may mature. But Amanat is also 19. The depth and breadth in voice develops during 14-17, not in the twenties.

I haven't read many threads since yesterday - this may already have been noticed by some. Was it my TV or was Amanat really breathing in too loud yesterday? I am not trying to take away anything from a brilliant performance. But I could really hear it everytime he was breathing in. Was it deliberate or insignificant?
