Rumours abound of Adi's plan to marry the actress against his father's wishes. But an insider told us that all the differences between the father and the son are not on the personal level.
Says our source, "It may come as a shock to many but Yash Chopra is having the last laugh with Yash Raj Films (YRF) gave a back-to-back failure with Ta Ra Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom."
A khabru from YRF camp adds, "Yashji is feeling jubilant because he did not have any say in the making of both these films. Aditya has almost completely taken over the running of YRF."
Namesake head
"Nobody listens to Yashji in the office these days. Aditya is taking all the creative decisions. Yashji has been talking about this to some of his confidantes. Aditya has a lot of knowledge about marketing, but he is a pale shadow of Yashji in establishing content. The content is the king and the content has faltered in TRRP and JBJ," the source adds.
When contacted, trade analyst Taran Adarsh insists that Yash Chopra cannot be happy with TRRP and JBJ's fate at the turnstiles. "I don't believe that Yashji and Adi are fighting with each other. Plus, I am sure that Yashji still commands a lot of respect in YRF," he says.
Adarsh is however aware that Aditya holds the reins in YRF now. "Aditya has been in charge since a long time. Yes, JBJ was a bad film. Its fate at the box-office did not surprise or sadden me. But such things happen when you make many films. One tends to feel that even this will also work. That does not mean that YRF is on the decline," he adds.
No Midas touch
Trade analyst cum Chief Editor, thirtymm.com, Indu Mirani, is more vocal. "I don't know about the family equations in Chopra household but Tara Rum Pam Pam and JBJ do not have Yash Chopra's touch.
YRF Films have always had gloss and glamour but with a solid story line. TRRP had a very slim story line and JBJ had none whatsoever. It is overconfidence on Aditya's part- bade star lo, film hit ho jayegi, YRF ki film hai," she says.
"In their good old days, YRF would not have made films like TRRP and JBJ. YRF stands for a lot more than just foreign locales and big stars," Mirani opines.
Future
Film exhibitor Manoj Desai is equally vocal. The promos of their upcoming venture Chak De (starring Shah Rukh Khan) were pulled off recently. "The trailer was too lengthy and public was hooting.
What else could I do but remove it? I strongly feel that the father-son rapport should return. This is not only bad for exhibitors but for Chopras themselves. Yashji should once again involve himself in YRF projects in all departments with sincerity and caution."
