let me put it this way every country specialises in a particular type of shows

latino....sensual and lots of infidelity dramas

british...satirical comedies

american...sitcoms and criminal investigative dramas and historicals

indian....long tearjerkers based on family life

southeastern asia....martial arts and romantics

if you are someone with a taste for romance ,simplicity and innocent dramas then you are bound to enjoy the south east asian dramas. these are short dramas with good looking cast, tight dialogue delivery and quite good direction. They are normally targeted at young crowd (15- 35 yrs) .thier length is the best thing about them. normally you get hooked on them very fast....thier speed makes sure that you end up the show before you start losing interest.

there is nothing special about them but if you are bored by indian style dramas and are looking for a short escape into fantasyland with a lot of eye candy then these shows will appeal to you. it is hard to find even one comparable show in indian terms (jjkn started that way but soon lost its path).the only analogy i can think of is "arabian nights". the stories are pretty simple but something about them kept the king from beheading his wife. it is same with these shows once you are hooked on them it is hard to get off. another reason is that thier high quality videos are very easily available with english subtitles online. incidentally as someone mentioned thier popularity is unprecedented. pop star "rain/bi" sold out this concert in mere 2 minutes in los angeles recently. i was looking at the certain list of publically voted best looking asians...much to my surprise first few to slots were filled by these actors. the point is it is all about your taste...you will either love them or hate them.

what i like about these shows is that they are based on a script instead of a concept. which means there is a predecided complete story on which the show is based. these stories are normally from popular mangas. this makes for the fact that there are few illogical twists in the show. also a good effort is made to develop characters instead of changing personalities overnight (jjkn)or them spouting long speeches on ethics(ekta fares).

let me give you a few examples. in this show goong...you can actually see the prince fuming under his calm exterior . his acting is so good in some scenes that you can even see the clenching of his jaws and ticking of his nerves. however his character never says more than few words. there are no villians who are evil to core and no leads who are perfect.

an another show hyd2 shows that the hero has a practical reason for avoiding his lady love and the process happens over a year , it is not something he decides one nice morning like in indian tales.

all korean shows are from south korea. north korea's strictly communist (crazy dictator -_-) and we don't really know what's going on there, but we have some ideea... such as the people are starving and that the dictator's making weapons and whatnot.
so korean shows.. DEFINITELY south korean. πŸ˜›

thanks for the links pj 😳
