I tried the vazhai poo kootu last night. It came out pretty good, but I think the flower itself was a little bitter. So, the kootu turned bitter too. Any suggestions on how to pick a good vazhai poo?

Continuing with the halwa controversy, what I made is simple halwa or it is called bombay halwa.
They normally soak the whole wheat, then gring and get the milk and do the halwa, using white sugar.
Or you can add brown sugar in place of white sugar and do the same method. You get smooth halwa.

The second recipe I gave was Kerala special called Black Halwa. It is made of rice flour, brown sugar and coconut milk. The texture will be a bit rough.

In Malaysia, they make their version called dodol.
It is made of glutinous rice brown sugar and coconut milk. You need special fire place and a big heavy wok to cook this dodol. It has to be stirred for hours, and the last part it will become gooey, and you need strong hands to stir.

Well this is what I know. Sorry if I am wrong.
There are many types of halwas. There is a Madurai special, where it is eaten hot, you cannot cut it into slices. Thanks.

Dear Rimasen, thanks for the feed back.
Sorry the dish was bitter.
My M.I.Law always will tell that the poo from a banana tree that produces valakai always tastes good.

Any other suggestions please.

The many types of murukku and iddiyappam press that I have. I could not locate my M.I.Law's 60 year old bronze murukku ural while taking the photo.

btw...I don't think I even fried an egg at 7yrs...!!😳😕

Thanks Sue & Caryn for your nice words again!. It was funny how you pointed out that you weren't even frying eggs when you were 7! I myself don't remember making anything solid until I was 14 and the first thing I learnt was also Tea, what a coincidence, Caryn!! But I always showed much interest in cutting vegetables it seems! go figure..😊

As per my daughter's interest in cooking ...yeah, she loves to make certain things with me and her favorite is baking cup cakes! The other items she enjoys helping & hanging with me in the kitchen while I cook are Pizza, Cookies, Jello & Kulfi!! She also comes to the kitchen every time I make chappathi and makes 1 or 2 nice designer chappathis (like a man with cute little hands and legs....) and asks me to cook it for her! So to make it more fun for my kids, I had bought a collection of cookie cutters using which I cut the chappathis or puris to bring out many designs for them before I cook it and they both love to eat these fun puris or chappathis. ...😃 I even make different designs while making dosas for them.. like a Star Dosa, Mickey Dosa, Flower Dosa....sorry I am going on and on.... but you don't feel it's too long anytime you talk about your kids, right?! 😊 Anyhow thanks again for your wishes and kind words.

My tea was disastrous Supree because a whole pot of tea had to be thrown away!!! 😆 😆 😆 Do you know why? There was salt in it. hehehehe.......... seriously!

One of my aunt said that in all sweet cookings, add little bit of salt, and the sweet things will taste better. So when I did the tea, "light bulb light my brains - toiiinnnggg!!! ahhaa....... aunty said that. Let's add 1 tsp of salt to a whole kettle of strong tea. So you can guess all the 'compliements' I got. Actually, I did not get any. Everyone scolded my poor maid thinking she did the tea, and I got scared and chose to keep quiet. (Well you would too, if you heard them complaining how expensive milk is... blah blah my maid was getting from the matriach and downwards. My maid too kept quiet and did not give me away. I thanked my maid for saving my soul. She was laughing away inspite of getting scolded by the family. Next day only I confessed to my mum. Of course my ears got pulled and I had to apologise to my maid. 😆

There you go, my first of disastrous cooking. Btw, I never drink tea at all in my life (only chinese tea where you no need sugar or milk)

Supree,

Just now I scrolled back and saw the Cake. What a talent at 7 years. 👏 👏 I still cannot decorate cake. I started cooking only after marriage. 😳
