Big encouragement
Amitabh Bachchan flanked by visually challenged contestants

Amitabh Bachchan, participated in the special episode of Antakshri for the visually challenged participants. The superstar recited Khalid Hashmi's poem 'Main prakash hoon, ajar amar andhakar ek nirav gunjan' for the children. The poem's theme is that being blind is not a drawback.

Two visually challenged girls, Mansi and Mamta, from Smt. Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind, presented a letter written by them for Amitabh Uncle. The letter had a special message for Mr. Bachchan and his ailing mother, Mrs Teji Bachchan who they wished a speedy recovery.Mr. Bachchan also wished and cheered the participants from Muncherjee Nowrowjee Banajee Industrial Home for the Blind.

Zee TV's Antakshari has devoted a six-part mini series for socially deprived sections of the society that includes the old age homes, street children and visually challenged people. The series is called as Music For A Cause.

Nishabd: HC&type=article','Email','width=450,height=475')"> Email Print

New Delhi: Delhi High Court has refused to stay the release of director Ram Gopal Varma's film Nishabd.

The Court said that the petitioner should have approached it earlier if it wanted to stop the screening of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer.

The Court had issued a notice to Varma's RGV Film Factory for copyright infringement regarding his soon to be released film, Nishabd.

Bengali filmmaker Jahar Kanungo had sought direction of the Court to stop the release of the film. He had claimed that he retains the copyright to the title Nishabd for 10 years since his Bengali film of the same title released in 2005.

Kanungo's film has received the best feature film award at Osian's Cinefan Festival Asian Film in July 2005, second prize at International Film Festival, Bangladesh in March 2006 and 'Coup De Coeur Guimet Award' at Vesoul International Festival of Asian Award.

The film was produced with financial aid under the scheme 'Fonds Sud Cinema' from the French government released in November 2002.

'Drona' shooting put on hold
01st Mar 2007  20.03 IST
By ApunKaChoice

The shooting of Abhishek Bachchan's forthcoming superhero film has hit a hurdle.

So much is being talked and written about Drona , which stars Abhishek Bachchan as a long haired superhero and Priyanka Chopra as his companion. The film will have Abhi performing several breath-taking stunts and actions.

One such action sequence was to be shot atop a moving train recently. But the permission to shoot in a train was cancelled by the Railway authorities after the recent bomb blasts in Samjhauta Express.

The movie's producer Shrishti Arya says the permission to shoot was already taken but the terrorist attacks have put the railway authorities on their toes and all shootings in trains have been cancelled.

The action sequence was to be shot in a desert. It is believed to be a part of the movie's climax.

While the movie's shooting has been postponed until new clearance comes from authorities, Abhishek is said to be taking some time off from work and enjoying long drives in his Bentley car. Priyanka, on the other hand, has flown to the US to be with her ailing father.

'Drona' will release in 2007 only.

Unusually Amitabh

Contrary to what that everpresent Angry Young Man tag will have you believe, Amitabh Bachchan has frequently turned his back on convention. So as the nation readies to see him play a 60-year-old in love with his daughter's pretty friend, 18 in Nishabd, we decided to take a trip down nostalgia lane and revisit Amitabh's unconventional romances. Saudagar (1973) In this strikingly tragic Sudhendu Roy film, Bachchan plays Moti, a jaggery seller who marries Majhubhi (Nutan), superb at the craft of extracting gud. His motive is to make enough money using Nutan to pay the dowry to marry the love of his life, a village girl played by Padma Khanna. The concept is jarring for its ruthlessness, and while the film eventually shows the leading man returning to Nutan, he is hardly repentant -- it is more the realisation that the village girl can't make gud. A sad, haunting film. Text: Raja Sen

Zameer (1975)

Many years before Baghban, Ravi Chopra made his directorial debut with this bold film. Amitabh plays Badal, an impostor claiming to be the once-kidnapped son of Maharaj Singh (Shammi Kapoor). He then proceeds to fall in love with the heiress Sunita (Saira Banu) -- who is, in implied effect, his sister. While his being an impostor is clear to the viewer from the beginning, thoughts of incest assault Sunita's ailing mother (Indrani Mukherjee) as the lovers begin to step gradually into the open.

Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

This Yash Chopra film saw Amitabh play Amit Malhotra, well and truly in love with Rakhi. But familial pressures give rise to circumstances wherein she is married off to Shashi Kapoor. Bachchan vanishes in a huff, reappearing to marry Waheeda Rehman -- if only out of spite. He later realises that she was an unwed mother, before he came along. There is severe emotional friction between Amitabh, Waheeda and the two couples who interact frequently. The film explores this fragile dynamic.

Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978)

The disparity between classes formed a major part of cinema, especially from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. This Prakash Mehra film cast Bachchan as Sikandar, a lowly servant boy with big dreams. He is in love with the bade ghar ki (well to do) Rakhi. Bachchan has toiled hard to help his friend Vishal (Vinod Khanna) have a good life, but when this friend turns out to marry Rakhi. He is devastated. He turns to drink, and dancing girls -- among which Zohrabai (Rekha) catches his fancy. Much melodramatic tragedy -- and a killer soundtrack -- is part of this failed-love story.

Silsila (1981)

Talk about a casting coup. Yash Chopra managed to get real-life couple Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan and throw them into an infidelity story with Rekha playing third-wheel. Overshadowed by far too much gossip, this film arguably remains the jewel in Chopra's crown. Bachchan, a writer, is in love with Rekha from the get-go. Meanwhile, his best friend Shashi Kapoor, a Squadron Leader in the Air Force, is all set to marry Jaya. Tragedy strikes, Shashi dies, and a weird guilt trip leads to Bachchan marrying the widowed Jaya. He never loves her, and has a passionate, defiant affair with Rekha, who is now married to Sanjeev Kumar. Bachchan's work is extraordinary as the leading man struggles with the conflicts of love, society and infidelity as a whole.

Bemisal (1982)

This Hrishikesh Mukherjee film pits Amitabh Bachchan with Vinod Mehra, as both play doctors and great friends -- in love with the same woman, Rakhi. Bachchan, at his absolute noblest, decides that the rich, successful Mehra would be able to give Rakhi a better life. He persuades her to marry Vinod. Later, the cunning Mehra goofs up and is about to be jailed for malpractice, but Bachchan falsely confesses and goes to jail on his -- and her -- behalf.
