anyway no need to be worried about what international award shows think of bollywood movies. if indians like the same old love stories in film after film, then so be it

Does shining light on human condition mean showing only dirt and filth in the society?? Does showing poverty, sickness and oppression only can convey a deeper meaning?? All Indian films are not just love stories, there are many meaningful healthy films, but without the poverty part, which are made both in bollywood and more in regional languages but very few of them get recognition when screened outside India.

i think abt deepa mehta and the directors of her like wht maya said fits in perfectly as far as oscars r concerned really y should we care for them when they dont really want to give a fair chance to indian films and they dont see them on an equal platform?

The only movie in the last 10 years which had material to win an Oscar was "Earth" and "Shwas"

Earth made Deepa Mehta(very good movie, I must say), For Shwas no-one cared(even though it was better than almost any movie produced in last 10 years)

Everyone complains movie's made to look India bad are only sent to Oscar, look at the above list, I dont think we have any movie that makes India or Bollywood look Bad

Water was not "our" nomination, It was not Shot in India, It was just made by a person who has Indian name with Indian actors.

We really need to stop clinging to people "named" Indians and cheer or boo them for that.

A kid who has a Indian name goes to American Idol makes every Indian proud, He is not Indian

Deepa Mehta is not Indian. Indian name Yes, but not Indian.

Time to Grow up India!!

actually the most common theme is that many of the movies take a look into the past. they're not just some lovey dovey movie, but instead decide to impart some kind of stronger message. for example, lagaan did not make indians look bad (it made the british look bad in fact) and it made it. rang de basanti was sent forward also because it was a proud look at the past.

every award show has its own biases. the oscars have a bias towards deeper films in the foreign category especially ones that show the past. the oscars have other biases too: for example, comedies rarely win awards. almost never even if they're the most popular movie of the year. Borat won nothing this year.

Read the posts carefully, noone said films showing a negative image of India are only chosen for Oscars but these movies when screened outside India gets critical acclaim sooner than movies which though as good don't show only the negative aspect of India.

As for you saying about Indians and their 'growing up' part, most people don't care who Deepa Mehta is or which guy did well in American Idol. The media reports the news that's all. But if you're an Indian and somehow watching American Idol wouldn't you support the participant with Indian origin more than the others?? What's so wrong in that?? The Indians in RSA or UK supports the Indian cricket team when the match involves India and some other team apart from RSA or UK, so do they also need to grow up??

In india nobody might have watched it... 😊.. Havent heard of the second...

Ok but then wasnt it reflecting the indian culture... by a person of our origin...RA's Gandhi definitely makes indian proud - dont have to have indian or some NRI to make it...😊 Btw she came wearing a sari not a formal suit or Versace...et al , she calls herself deepa mehta and not Diana Moss and made a film about indian period.. so whats non-indian about her...😆

We really need to stop clinging to people "named" Indians and cheer or boo them for that. Sure who clings to them... I felt veri proud when Lagaan got the nomination....but not since...

A kid who has a Indian name goes to American Idol makes every Indian proud, He is not Indian I think he should have been voted out already there are too many better singers and infact our absurd voting got a better guy out the last time.... I wont support him just cos he is half indian....Of course his father is indian so why he is not an indian?

Deepa Mehta is not Indian. Indian name Yes, but not Indian. Who cares Indians care for a promising indian potrayal.. whether its an NRI or Indian... Bend it like beckham... was another example which appealed more to the west than indians....

Time to Grow up India!!Indians collectively are way too smart in these matters. If they feel proud about somebody doing something good as person of indian origin thats nothing to hold against... Kalpana chawla, was she non-Indian??  Norah jones - you call her what non-indian, even though she is no where close to her fathers achievements she has those inherited skills? Gururaj deshpande who has a department named after him at MIT is he a non-indian? The CEO of pepsi is she non-indian... Freddie mercury of Queen was he a non-indian.. he went to school in my neighboring town in mumbai.. There are many indians who have migrated and have achieved a lot and have the link to their country still active... So dont think Indians are cling-ons.. Indians know how to put people right where they are supposed to be...😊

Malayalam film Guru is one of the best films ever made in Indian cinema history. It truly was an Oscar material. There are so many regional films which are ignored over Hindi cinema each year. If India is serious about sending its films to Oscar then they should analyse the regional ones too.
